Steps to Reproduce

Log off, wait a bit, and check your email for offline messages.

Actual Behavior

Up until recently (2 weeks, maybe less), I would always have anywhere from 30 to 100 emails from SL every night while I'm offline. IM's, group notices. etc. Now, however, I hardly get any. The first couple of times, I thought maybe it was a fluke, but now I"m certain something is wrong because it's Saturday and I just checked my email & there were only 5. (On Saturday, usually there are around 100). I asked in group last night, and was told something borked and the "Send offline IM"s to email" thing got turned off for some residents, so I unchecked it and rechecked it in prefs. Apparently that wasn't the issue. Not to mention, I was still getting a few in email so clearly they were - sort of - working. So yes, something is messed up somewhere.

Expected Behavior

I was expecting to get all of my notices in my email while I was offline.

Other information

I will also note that I've had a rise in IMs/notices going to email when I AM online. I will be talking to someone - not tp'ing, or anything, and all of a sudden their IM will land in my email as an "offline". I know this can happen for various reasons, but it's happening a lot more often lately. Don't know if this has anything to do with the above issue or not, but I thought I'd mention it.

[My post from the above link just to reiterate]
I am having this same issue which began for me on Friday, January 30th - since that date about 80%+ of my offlines to email are not arriving at all. And I receive daily IMs and notecards while I am offline as a regular part of my sale business. I have used the same (updated) devices and email for years with only rare interruptions which I could track down through SL. But this time I can't find any explanation for the problem. I have double checked all my preference settings and even account settings which have not changed - I am and have been completely setup to receive offline emails.

Strangely enough, this also includes email logs from my scripted subscriber system and submission system that get regularly emailed to the same address. These logs get sent whether I am online or not - these logs are automatic, sent throughout the day every day and directly sent to my email. Only 20% (or less) of any messages that are supposed to be delivered to me by email from SL are going to my email address at yahoo.

For whatever reason, it seems the emails are not actually being generated and sent from SL. I have checked the devices and even flushed the logs to make sure there were no errors in SL. The local chat whispers are telling me that everything is being sent (and a copy of what was sent posts in local) to the same address I have used for years but nothing ever arrives in my email. This is not a spam or filter issue as my email address has been receiving these SL related emails for years. And I am still receiving some of the emails but definately not all. My alts are receiving emailed offlines as normal.

This is definately an issue and needs to be addressed.

Yeah I am actually. Hmmm. I wonder if Yahoo screwed the pooch. They've done it before with emails being sent from iPhones, with attachments.

after testing

Ok I sent 2 diff alts an IM while they were offline. They use 2 diff emails, neither of which are Yahoo. Neither alt got the IM. Sooo, yeah.

Okay I (Whirly Fizzle) sent my offline alt (Kippy Adored) an offline IM, an offline inventory offer (passed an object) and sent a group notice for a group Kippy is in.
I sent all 3 from Clutter region and then again from Testylvania sandbox region.

I got no emails for the offlines sent from Clutter region but I got all 3 emails (offline IM, inventory offer and group notice) sent from Testylvania Sandbox.
I'm using hotmail.

I'll repeat that test a couple more times and see if only Clutter fails.

I already got all 3 offline messages from veil of shadows.
No sign of the offlines sent from Clutter - I'll update here if they arrive but I don't think they are going to.

Seems to be a region issue with Clutter in my case.

Fallacy, see if your alt gets offlines sent from http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Veil%20of%20Shadows/187/67/29 or a different region.
    Can you restart Clutter?

Will go there now and check. And yes, I'll restart Clutter while I'm gone. Will post back in a sec.

tests

Ok restarted Clutter. I sent the same alts another IM from the place you listed above. When I went to check my email for those, the ones I sent from Clutter the first time were there, along with the ones I had just sent. So after Clutter restarted, I went back there and sent IM's again. They were both in email after about a minute. Sooooo I'm not sure what to think about this. When I mentioned it in group last night, I was told that this issue only affected "some" avatars, so either my alts didn't get hit with it, it is in fact a Yahoo issue, or there's some other cause we haven't found yet.

Any other suggestions?

Whirly Fizzle commented at 2015-02-08T02:45:53Z

Hmm different results in my case.

I went back to Clutter after you restarted it and sent 3 offline IMs - none have arrived.
I then TPd to Tesylvania sandbox and sent 1 offline IM - email arrived within 1 min.
Then TPd to Veil of shadows and sent1 offline IM - email arrived within 1 min.

So still a 100% fail for me with all offlines that originated from Clutter region (even after the restart) and other regions I tested on are seemingly fine.

So no idea Fallacy but I'm sure LL will figure it out.

I've dealt with this for over half a year now. Its Yahoo's stupid spam thresholds. If a host is sending out so many Emails over so much time, it is added to Yahoo's blocked list. Offline IMs sent from any region on that host won't be received until the host is removed from their blocked list or the region restarts on a host that isn't already blocked.

The problem is caused primarily by in-world advertising services sending out ads to large databases of people from in-world objects or bots and griefers targeting offline accounts with spam objects.

Good luck getting Yahoo to unblock a host too.

I am using a third-party hosting company for the various domains and websites that are part of my SL business. Those websites are also equipped with POP3 mail service. I have full control over the spam filters and am 100% sure that if the messages are actually making it to my inbound mail servers then they are not getting caught in the filters.

This makes me believe that the messages are not reaching my inbound mail server. This could be because either: 1) The sending domain has somehow gotten itself blacklisted, or 2) The messages are not actually being sent.

Like others, I am concerned that I am missing important (and possibly lucrative) offline messages.

Fallacy DeCuir commented at 2015-02-08T08:30:42Z

Well, I'm no coding whiz (understatement), but I don't think it would be Yahoo's spam filters. I've used Yahoo email for 15+ years, and have been in SL for over 7, and I've never had a problem receiving offlines until now. Not saying that Yahoo couldn't of changed something somewhere, but it's highly doubtful that all the other people having this issue is using Yahoo email. As for Darrius' option #1 above - I doubt that is the problem because I have been receiving a FEW offlines, so it would stand to reason that if the domain was blacklisted, then I wouldn't receive any at all. So at this point, I'm going with the above option #2 - the messages are not being sent.

Ditto to what Fallacy has said above - I am getting SOME of my offlines to my yahoo email but I am not getting them all. I am only receiving about 20% of the offline emails. So if the yahoo spam filter is an issue or the sending domain is being blocked then why are ANY of the emails being received in my box? It has to be as I said in my first post and as Darrius also suggested; the messages aren't being sent.

I wanted to add to that my payment submission senders are used daily by numerous people grid wide. Among other things, the submission sender is scripted to send me an email every time it is used. The users place the device wherever they have permission to do so. This means that the devices are sending me emails from various sims all over. If you want to know which sims are (or are not) getting their email through to me then I can give you a list! :) It hadn't occurred to me until I read Whirly's comments to check to see if some emails from certain sims last week were received and this week were not (or vice versa). But I will make a note to check on that too.

Point of note, the reason I have my payment submission senders scripted to email me is because frequently enough SL has failed to send the offline messages. The device sent email is my backup notice. And never before has the device sent email failed to reach me. It seems peculiar that those emails stopped at the same time the SL offline emails stopped.

Update! Just tested using one of my Alts and the IM successfully arrived at my email inbox. I will be testing randomly off and on, but at the moment all seems to be working properly.

Has anyone on this Issue been able to identify a range of times or other circumstances that make delivery of offline IMs less reliable? So far I have not been able to pin down anything repeatable; just hoping someone else has.

I'm also sure it's not Yahoo. I've been reliably getting IM's for years. Last week they went silent, except for perhaps one a day (rather than a half dozen). I tried an IM from my alt and got no e-mail. An asset transfer did result in an e-mail.

Has anyone on this Issue been able to identify a range of times or other circumstances that make delivery of offline IMs less reliable?

Yes.
In my case it appears to matter which region the sender of the offline is on when they send it.
I still have received no offlines when I sent my alt IM's, inventory offers and group notices from Clutter region even after Clutter was restarted.
Testing sending offlines from other regions are so far workinbg as expected.

Hopefully a Linden can check the server logs for Clutter for the times I gave above and see why the email failed - they should be able to see if Hotmail blocked those emails or not.

We may not all be suffering from the same problem though.

I just repeated the tests I did yesterday and same results.
Offlines I send to my alt do not arrive in email if sent from Clutter region but do arrive to email when sent from Veil of Shadows region.

Darrius, maybe you can test this because you have full access to what arrives to your email.

Do you get the offlines sent from Veil of Shadows but not from Clutter?

Yo! Whirly!

As requested, I logged in with an Alt, TP'd to each location separately, sent an offline IM and then TP'd back to my starting location. I received both offline IMs.

Note that I closed the IM Window upon returning back to my original location such that I only opened an IM window while already in the Region of interest.

I only did offline IMs though as your tests showed nothing came through from Clutter yet in my tests the IM was received. Stay tuned for more tests revolving around when the IM window is opened ...

  • [22:23] Darrius' Alt: IM window opened in Clutter. Offline IM sent from Clutter.
  • [22:23] Darrius' Alt: IM window still open since entering Clutter. Offline IM sent from Veil of Shadows.

Both offline IMs received. Hmmm ...

Thanks Darrius.

So far I'm thinking my problem with hotmail is this (Maestro's last comment on BUG-6591

Maestro Linden added a comment - 08/Jul/14 4:39 PM

I ran some more tests with dd. In her case, her email provider blocks emails from certain sim IP addresses but not others (similar to gmx/1and1, the bounce mode was a simple 'abuse' type). Anyway, I just wanted to point out that this per-sim-blocking behavior exists in the wild.

Clutter was restarted so it will have changed sim IP address (I think?) but maybe I was just unfortunate that both that old & new sim IP addresses are being blocked by Hotmail.

Well, still not fixed. I just checked my email. I should of had around 40 emails. I had 5 again - but NONE from SL this time. They were all from the Marketplace, except one for this thread. I got to thinking. I don't think this is a region issue, because whereas sending IM's to alts sometimes fail from Clutter, all these people sending group notices from subscribers aren't on Clutter - they're all over the grid. So yeah. Lindens? Bueller? Bueller?

Last test: IM Window opened after TP to Veil of Shadows

  • [22:30] Darrius' Alt: IM window opened in Veil of Shadows. First Offline IM sent from Veil of Shadows.
  • [22:30] Darrius' Alt: IM window still open since arriving in Veil of Shadows: Second Offline IM sent from Clutter.

I then stayed logged in, left the IM window open and checked email. Sure enough, both Offline IMs received.

Sorry to say but it looks like it is working properly for me now.

This issue is happening to me as well. In the past, instant messages rarely failed to reach my inbox or spam box. I could always converse with people from offline without problem. In the past 2 or 3 weeks, my instant messages fail most of the time. I log in and find not only instant messages, but notecards delivered to me. While my transactions show a 0L delivery, I get no notification that the notecard was sent. In the past, I always got a notification to my email that something was dropped off by another person. This failure of the system is very difficult to manage for active merchants who rely on email notifications and instant message/email correspondence when offline. Please let me know what details I can provide to help diagnose and fix the issue. Thanks.

So, I woke up to numerous instant messages and one inventory offer - none of the messages made it to email and the notification of inventory offer never made it either. This is very frustrating.
I've used Yahoo for about 9 years. Messages from Second Life have reliably reached my inbox or spam box until recently. Yes, of course there have been some blips, but never a total blackout which is what is happening now.

I still use Yahoo mail and it is still a huge problem. Very unreliable meaning sometimes I am receiving offlines from places that later don't work including the sim I reside on.
Below is a list of sims I am no longer reliably receiving offlines (from Avatars or objects) from in SL this week. Please note I said THIS WEEK and it only includes the sims I know things were sent from that I never received. This list only includes the sims that I know from my trans history where the send originated.

@September62 Fallen

Hotmail is definitely also affected.
Hotmail appears to be blocking certain IP ranges so you will receive offlines sent from some regions but not receive offlines when sent from a different region.
Those regions that work and do not work will change after the rolling restarts when the restarted regions IP changes.
I don't know if thats whats really going on at Hotmails end, but thats how it appears to be behaving for my accounts using a Hotmail email address.

My accounts using Gmail as far as I know are receiving all their offlines - though Gmail does often send SL offlines to the spam folder, but at least they arrive.

Well, in my case, all my alts have their own dedicated email address at my own registered domain. They go through a mail server at my web-space provider, which is ipower.com, but the mails are usually only there a moment before being snapped up my the email server sitting under my desk (which can only be logged into via my LAN). In the case of the server at my web-space provider, all the anti-spam functions are turned off, with the exception of ONE, but all THAT one does is, if it thinks something is a spam, it inserts "SPAM" into the subject line. :D My local email server also has all anti-spam functions turned off.

So, if something is blackholing messages from SL that are addressed to my domain, it must be some machine between SL and my web-space provider. oO

I don't regularly compare sales with email notifications, since there are too many, so noticing two just now does not mean these are the only two.

I also have noticed Message on Rez emails not arriving either.

What other information is needed??

Please give us an update. It has been more than 3 months and nothing has changed.
WHAT OTHER INFORMATION IS NEEDED??
Everyone commenting has tried to give this the best information we have available but it seems this issue has been completely forgotten.

Agree. I changed my email to my Gmail address a while back, and it seems to be working for me now, at least. But I'd much rather have it going to my Yahoo account like it has for the past 7 years. So yeah. What else do you guys need to know before you fix this mess?

I noticed no problem with receiving emails to my email account until May 28...now i get perhaps 1/4 of what is sent. So whatever switch SL flipped last week gave me the bug.

Almost 4 months - 2 months since a Linden even responded. I'd say we're all SOL folks. Ah well, who needs those pesky business IM's anyway.

My SL avatars use Yahoo email addresses and stopped receiving IM and group notices several months ago. [Those avatars still receive emails when the IMs come from scripted objects.] I finally reported this to the Lab and was pointed to this JIRA, so the Lab is still aware its an issue and is tracking. Here's an excerpt from the advise the Linden provided in my case:

"It looks like you are being affected by a known issue that our developers are working to correct ... While this issue is being resolved, you should be able to work around this by switching the email address on your account temporarily to a different provider"

As suggested, I switched my email to a Gmail address and traffic is now being delivered. I then put a forwarding filter on the Gmail address to point to my Yahoo account, so I'm still able to maintain my SL archive in the Yahoo mailbox. It's a PITA, but at least I'm getting the off-line emails again.

Sorry, guys. So what we know so far is that there are two points of failures

  1. Email provider has marked SL emails as spam or chugs it away before going to the inbox
  2. Check you agent profile on the website www.secondlife.com. Click on Account -> Change Email Address -> Change Offline IM Settings. Change Offline IM Settings -> I would like to receive offline IMs via Email wasn't checked (needs to be checked)

Caleb....I have used yahoo mail for the last 6 years with no issues until a week ago; and my profile is as well as my preferences are marked to receive IMs via email when offline. Whatever changes took place last week broke mine. Additionall, I cant even get email from support now...to confirm the email address change.

Um, not to sound like a smarta** Caleb, but the 2 things you listed is what you have known for about 3 months now. Considering this, it wouldn't seem to be that hard of a thing for you guys to contact Yahoo and be like "HAI! Can you stop blocking Second Life's EFFING EMAILS? kthnx!"
Not to mention, a good many of us have used Yahoo email for YEARS (8, in my case), so I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden, WHAM - they start blocking SL's emails? If SL was blacklisted, why are we receiving SOME emails but not most? And what about the people that don't use Yahoo at all? Are you saying that all of a sudden, ALL of these email providers decided over coffee that it would be fun to drive some Second Life residents insane?
I will be contacting Yahoo myself sometime this week, and will find out for sure who exactly is dropping the ball here. Because whereas I know I am impatient, 4 months is more than enough time for an issue like this to be resolved - about 10 times.

In my case, it appears it's the @im.agni.lindenlab.com domain that gets blocked by Yahoo. The account still receives traffic from the @secondlife.com domain.

Yahoo and the other large providers are always tweaking their SPAM filters; I suspect they've adjusted their heuristics and now flag traffic that's being generated via the simulations, avatar IMs and the in-world groups. The issue (for me) is less about Yahoo tweaking their filters so traffic gets flagged, and more about them not sending us ALL our traffic. [I'd be fine with the Lab's traffic showing up in my Yahoo SPAM filter, as long as I got it.] However, that's not what they do. Now, when Yahoo blocks a site at the domain level, we won't see the traffic at all, not even in our SPAM folder.

Maybe if we all vote on this suggestion, we'll get some relief.

@fallacy. I spent about two hours on the Yahoo site today, looking for a way to contact their Support directly, the best link I could find was https://io.help.yahoo.com/contact/index?page=contact&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML&versionPopup=true# ...that page allow you to actually open a support ticket if you click on Postmaster Basics > Bulk Sender Complaint Feedback Loop

I am the exact opposite of Asil - I checked all the offlines I have received recently and they are all from the @im.agni.lindenlab.com domain. I have received nothing in this past week from the @secondlife.com domain or any other domain used by SL (if there are others).

I am with Fallacy, I have been using this Yahoo address for more than 6 years and I simply don't subscribe to this idea that suddenly only certain emails from SL are getting blocked by Yahoo.
Not only that but with what Asil said, how is it one person using Yahoo mail gets nothing from one SL domain and another person using the same mail service is only receiving SL mail from a different SL domain and not the other one?!? It makes no sense that Yahoo has anything to do with this under those circumstances. If Yahoo was blocking one domain then NO ONE using Yahoo would receive mail from that domain. Please explain that.

And while you are figuring things out - why is it more and more people are suddenly getting affected by this bug?? If it was Yahoo's fault wouldn't ALL yahoo users have been affected at the same time and not at different intervals over the course of several months??

Come on - knuckle under and solve this issue.

Dear Mr. Fürholz,
thank you for your patience. I have some good news for you.
After talking to my colleagues from WEB.DE I just suspended the blacklisting. In a couple of minutes you will again receive emails from the email-servers *.lindenlab.com.
Please consider, should the forwarding email-servers contact a high number of non-existing email-addresses on our email-servers, a temporary blacklisting of these particular servers will take place.
In case that despite a temporary blacklisting of the forwarding servers there are no significant improvements of the delivery-rates, that can lead to a permanent blacklisting again.
But I hope that this can be avoided, and that the servers score acceptable delivery rates.
Kind regards

Just to chime in, this is still going on; I've had every email come in today, and most from the last week, that makes it to my email box (the fact that half the group notices get sent to me for when I log in and not also as offline messages irrelevant at this second) go straight to the Spam folder, despite a) flagging each email as "not spam", and b) having a filter setup in Yahoo with the "im.agni.lindenlab.com" return address to shunt them all into a folder called "Second Life".
