Maestro Linden commented at 2014-12-22T23:48:18Z I see the boxes on some of the characters of that test string on Mac, as the attached 'maestro view.png'. My env:

ZhouYifei commented at 2014-12-23T00:44:26Z I see exactly the same as Maestro Linden's attached image. |

ZhouYifei commented at 2014-12-30T23:41:21Z I have been doing some experiments on how my viewer searches for fonts, and how OS/X satisfies the search. In the viewer's /Applications/Second Life Viewer.app/Contents/Resources/skins/default/xui/en/fonts.xml file, there is a "call" to a font file named 华文细黑.ttf (which is a font file intended for Chinese-language use). This font file exists in OS/X's fonts directory but does not seem to be being picked up by the viewer. As an experiment, I copied 华文细黑.ttf into /Applications/Second Life Viewer.app/Contents/Resources/fonts and now all my Chinese characters display correctly. Unfortunately, this "solution" means that everyone I talk to who uses a Mac, and has this problem, would have to do the same, which is not really satisfactory. I don't know how OS/X and Second Life viewer handle searching for fonts, but this seems to be at least part of the problem. |
ZhouYifei commented at 2014-12-31T00:36:25Z Some further investigation suggests that Second Life Viewer is looking in /System/Library/Fonts for its font files, but not looking in /Library/Fonts where the bulk of OS/X font files are stored. I deleted 华文细黑.ttf from /Applications/Second Life Viewer.app/Contents/Resources/fonts and then copied 华文细黑.ttf from /Library/Fonts to /System/Library/Fonts. When I started the viewer, Chinese characters displayed correctly. To confirm, I shut down the viewer, deleted 华文细黑.ttf from /System/Library/Fonts, and restarted the viewer, and Chinese characters once again displayed incorrectly. I do not know where the Mac version of Second Life Viewer is told where to look for fonts, but this seems to be the cause of the problem. Would it be possible to tell the viewer to look in both directories? |
ZhouYifei commented at 2015-12-20T06:10:49Z This problem has become worse with release of El Capitan (OS/X 10.11). In addition to the problem documented above, EC no longer provides the Japanese font files ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3.otf and ヒラギノ角ゴ ProN W3.otf that the SL viewer expects, so neither Japanese or Chinese will display correctly. |
Whirly Fizzle commented at 2015-12-20T06:30:59Z There is a fix pending for the El Capitan problem - see STORM-2124 |
ZhouYifei commented at 2015-12-21T00:31:03Z That fix will only address the problem with Japanese, not Chinese. The Chinese font file referenced by the Second Life viewer is simply not in a directory that the viewer searches by default on OS/X. All the work-arounds that involve editing the viewer's configuration files, or copying font files into non-default places, are not really satisfactory, because they only fix the problem locally for the user of the computer on which the work-around has been applied. Everybody else will still see the characters as gibberish, unless they apply the same work-arounds on their own machines. This problem has gone unaddressed for more than a year. |
Steps to Reproduce
I first noticed it when typing Chinese in chat, using the QIM input method, which has worked correctly for me for years. Subsequently I have noticed that the problem also appears with Chinese characters in float-text, and notecards also.
Actual Behavior
Some (not all) Chinese characters do not display in Chat, IMs, object float-text, note-cards etc. Examples of text that does not display correctly include: 我爱你。我出生在上海但现在我住在澳大利亚悉尼。
Expected Behavior
I was expecting Chinese characters to be displayed correctly!
Other information
This problem seems to have appeared since I acquired a new Mac running Mavericks, but I have no difficulty typing Chinese in other applications using the same input method. The same viewer running on Snow Leopard does not exhibit the same problem.
I notice that this problem does not appear with Chinese text in in land descriptions in About Land, or in resident's profiles.
It looks as if the problem might be that the viewer is not handling Simplified Chinese characters. Traditional characters seem to work OK.
