Steps to Reproduce

I was trying to download the mandatory upgrade

Actual Behavior

Just tried downloading and launching the newest, mandatory update for the SL viewer (3.7.20.29604). Now it won't fully launch. It starts to, but doens't fully load. It goes as far as "Initializing VFS" and when that disappears, things apparently stop. It won't even show in my Task Manager list. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled several times. This does not fix the issue. I even performed the full clean install detailed in the Knowledge Base.

I'm on a Win 7 home edition.

Expected Behavior

To work properly?

Heya Shanndarra,

Theres a growing number of reports about this problem, see BUG-7776 and these 2 forum threads...

Some people seem to be just getting stuck on "initialising VFS...." which others appear to actually be crashing.

When a viewer gets stuck on "initialising VFS..." it is usually a problem with the viewer cache or if the viewer actually crashes just after "initialising VFS..." shows on screen - a graphics driver issue.

Can you try the following first:

If this does not work, launch the 3.7.20.296094 viewer and let it crash.
Then zip up your logs folder and attach it to this issue using More Actions -> Attach files.
This page tells you where to find the logs folder: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-report-a-bug/ta-p/733545#Section_.3

Because you cannot get as far as the login screen to paste all your system information, please can you launch any viewer that you can use currently, from the login screen, in the top menu bar, go to Help -> About Second Life/Viewer name and copy all your system information given here and paste it into a comment here.

Thanks!

Shanndarra, for now you can try the Attachments-RC viewer from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/3.7.20.296355
This one should be okay for you.

ok, I had to reboot my system due to new Windows updates, & now when I tried to launch sl, it told me I needed ot update. I tried the update (nothing else I could do ot get in) & it's failed to install every time. I know you are trying hard to help, but I'm getting so frustrated.

Yeah someone else had this problem getting updated to a viewer version that is crashing again.

What you can do for now is...
Uninstall all versions on the Linden viewer you have installed.
Install fresh a viewer version without the benchmark changes - for example the Attachments-RC from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/3.7.20.296355 that we know works okay for you.
Right click the desktop shortcut for this viewer version -> Properties -> Shortcut tab
Here you will see a text box named "Target".
Go to the end of the text in this text box and enter a space.
After the space type in ```Java
--channel NoUpdate

Apply and save the changes.
Launch the viewer from this shortcut and the updater will be disabled.

Hope that helps.

The Attachment and Maintenance viewers have been updated to 3.7.21 status, meaning they now have the new video-detection code that is almost certainly the problem. The Snowstorm project viewer may still be a viable workaround but, hey, project viewer. Could someone update the priority of this to Showstopper? I'm not normally a melodramatic person but we really need to get at least a safe workaround for this as soon as possible. The "Answers" section of the forum is getting a LOT of these issues.

BUG-7776 was linked to an internal issue (MAINT-4670) earlier today so Lindens are aware of the problem I guess.

Theresa, is everyone on the Answers forum having this problem also Intel graphics? So far all the JIRA reports are from systems with Intel graphics.

This is a dupe of BUG-7783. Old Intel gpus seem to be crashing during our gpu benchmark to determine default graphics settings.

Can you try testing the following build http://automated-builds-secondlife-com.s3.amazonaws.com/hg/repo/oz_maint-4678/rev/296847/index.html and letting us know in BUG-7783 if this resolves your issue?
