Steps to Reproduce

trying to buy an item, or open/edit something I own.

Actual Behavior

I have been having a problem with buying objects and opening or editing objects. I believe they are all related to the same problem of things not loading. When I try to buy things the buy button does not light up or it will one time and then not for the rest of the time I am on. Objects that I own I can no longer open as they do not load, same goes for if I try edit the contents will not load. If a friend is with me they have no issue buying and they can also see the contents of my objects. So everything loads for them so I don't believe its lag as I have a fairly good computer. I have tried clean install of viewer, cleaning cache, restarting router, checking for packet loss. I don't know what else to try.

Expected Behavior

that I could buy the item or the contents of my owned object would load

Other information

I use firestorm but I downloaded the SL viewer to see if the problem would clear up and had the same results.

Heya Abella,

Hmm those symptoms could be connection issues.
They could also be region issues but if your friends have no problems with the same objects on the same region then that doesn't sound like a region problem.

The problem with object inventory never loading can also be caused by something being amiss with the Windows Temp folder - it's usually seen when someone has moved their Temp folder to a non-default location but it hasn't been done correctly.
I have never seen that causing the Buy button to remain greyed out though - the Buy button problem is usually network "lag".

If you go to Communicate (Comm on Firestorm) -> Block list, does your block list also fail to load?
That's another symptom seen when there's a problem with the temp folder in Windows.

Can you run a session on the LL viewer (from https://secondlife.com/support/downloads/) where you reproduce the problem of an objects contents never loading and trying to buy an object and then log out.
Then before relaunching the viewer, zip up your logs folder & attach it to this issue using More Actions -> Attach files.
This page tells you where to find your LL viewer logs folder: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-report-a-bug/ta-p/733545#Section_.3

Thanks!

Hi Abella,

Please use the official Second Life viewer to reproduce this issue and attach logs as Whirly has described.

Thanks!

I'm out of town for a few days and not using my own computer but I'll follow instructions when I return. I noticed that the page does not include instructions for windows 10 which is what I use. I am going to assume here that instructions are similar but should they not be can you give them to me for 10? Thanks - Abella

The instructions are pretty much the same for Windows 10.
Those instructions are actually wrong though in my opinion. They only ask for the "SecondLife.log, SecondLifeCrashReport.log and stack_trace.log" on Windows.
This is useless if someone is crashing & you need to see why they crashed - you need the dmp file from inside the dump folder for the crashed session.
there isn't even a stack_trace.log on recent viewer versions.

For Windows 10:

  • You need to get into the AppData folder in Windows, which is a hidden folder by default.

  • There are 2 ways to access the AppData folder & access the viewer logs folder.

    1. Make sure hidden files & folders are set to show in Windows 10 - see http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/show-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-vista/
Then browse to C:\Users\ [USERNAME] \AppData\Roaming\SecondLife

    2. Right click on the Windows Start button -> Search.
In the search box, type in %APPDATA%
At the top of the search results you should see %APPDATA% folder. Left click on that.
Then Open the Roaming folder then open the SecondLife folder.

  • Inside the SecondLife folder, you will see a folder named logs.
Right click on the logs folder -> Send to -> Compressed (zipped) folder.

  • You will then have a zipped folder called logs.zip inside the SecondLife folder.

  • Attach logs.zip to this JIRA issue using More Actions -> Attach files.

Thanks for the logs.
The problem clearly shows in your logs, but I don't know why this is happening yet.

This session actually disconnected right after you opened the Buy Contents floater for the last time.

Is this something that often happens?
If you leave the Buy Contents window open for a long time, does the viewer usually disconnect? ("You have been logged out of Second Life, View IM/Quit" or "This region may be experiencing trouble. Please check your connection to the Internet.").

The "Permission denied" warnings are odd...
WARNING:#LLFile warnif: Couldn't rename to 'C:\Users\anna\AppData\Local\SecondLife\inventory_619cff0d-3c2f-2bba-e382-aa2b69b6c732.tmp' from 'C:\Users\anna\AppData\Local\Temp\0d104f7e-ebe8-7779-c879-89d5f87d5015.tmp' (errno 13): Permission denied

If you run the viewer as Administrator, does this fix the problem?
Right click the viewer shortcut -> Run as Administrator.

I may have logged out myself. I do not have a problem with the viewer disconnecting when I leave the buy contents window open for a long time. Sometimes I try reclogging to see if this clears up the problem and generally does not so that may be what your seeing. I logged on as administrator and this does not solve the issue. I have also tried disconnecting my router to see if it changes anything but it doesn't.

I can open block list in both the Firestorm Viewer and the SL viewer. I do not have anybody in the list so I don't know if that makes a difference that the list is blank.

Can you block a couple of random avatars and a couple of inworld objects, check those avatars and objects show in your block list and then relog and check if your block list still lists those items.

okay I blocked people and objects and logged out, checked in both SL viewer and firestorm and the blocks stayed with no problem. Link is picture showing they are there.

Hi Abella,

I'm suspicious of all the permission errors in your Temp folder, so I'd like to have you just completely delete all its contents from your system safely.

For Windows 10

  • Search for Disk cleanup from the taskbar and select it from the list of results.
  • Under Files to delete, select the file types to get rid of. In this case select all Temporary file options. (Feel free to have Disk Cleanup remove other files while you're at it.)
  • Select OK

Next please completely uninstall Second Life. To make sure all cache has been cleared, right-click on windows Start and click Search. Type in %appdata% and open it. From there open the Local folder and find the SecondLife folder. Delete the entire SecondLife folder here.

Finally, download and install the latest copy of Second Life from https://get.secondlife.com

Once you have done this please verify if the failure to load object contents is still happening.

Please press the Info Provided button and let us know.

Thanks!

Hi Abella,

I'm happy to hear that cleaning out your Temporary files with Disk Cleanup and a fresh install of Second Life has resolved this issue.

Thanks for letting me know it worked!

Firestorm support may have found the (or one of) the causes of the sudden spate of people reporting object contents forever stuck on "Loading....".
We have so far had 3 confirms from affected users that had this problem that they had ByteFence installed on their system and uninstalling it fixed the issue.
https://www.pcrisk.com/removal-guides/9191-bytefence-redirect

Also linked other cases of this problem on the forums.
