Steps to Reproduce

The following steps I have taken:

I cleaned cache and web browser cache.
I checked the profile - feed and its privacy settings.
I tried and checked in the Official SL Viewer and Firestorm.
Search for different names who are set on private but all were visible.

I also checked it with another account where search profile was disabled.
This account has no friends, groups, classified, land or show place in search.
Still this profile was visible in search.

Actual Behavior

I unchecked my profile not to show up in search. However it is still visible.

Expected Behavior

In a situation when privacy is needed I would like my profile to be private.

I think the "show in search" setting for avatars only updates twice a day, ~ every 12 hours.
Currently I can find your name in websearch all, websearch people & Firestorm legacy search people.
You do have your web profile at https://my.secondlife.com/eiao locked down though, so minimal details show.

Hello Whirly, thank you for thinking along.
The profile is locked indeed if people look it up. Also I have tested with a group and indeed its now not in search anymore - so the refresh has happened. However the profile still shows up in in-world search.

I presume if you 'unable search', your profile, shouldn't show up at all.

I presume if you 'unable search', your profile, shouldn't show up at all.

The way that setting works has always been a big cause of confusion.
I'm not actually sure what the current expected behaviour is for profile "Show in search" & whether it's currently totally broken or not lol.

Before web profiles, the behaviour used to be that unticking Show In Search would hide your name from search results under Search -> Everything (because this search was available on the web via world.secondlife.com) but your name would still be found under Search -> people.
ie) Disabling Show In Search would only hide you from web searches, not from someone logged in on a viewer & using Search -> People.
This used to cause confusion back then too, though it was expected behaviour - you could never fully hide your profile from showing up in search to logged in users.

Since web profiles & since SL search has been updated, the current behaviour appears to be that Show in Search has zero effect - when Show in Search is disabled, your name/profile will still show in Websearch -> Everything & Websearch -> People both in the viewer and on https://search.secondlife.com/, even for users not logged into secondlife.com.

Looking at this comment on WEB-3603, I'd say this is expected behaviour:

Profiles privacy has been updated. Avatar name and picture will always be shown, however all other information can be limited using preferences. If a user is set to not show in Search, the name and picture will show in search so you can find them to send IMs, etc. inworld, however none of the About information will be shown in search results. This has been implemented as of Search in Viewer 2.7.1.

You can now decide what information is visible on your web profile via the Preference settings at https://my.secondlife.com/settings/privacy too.

Two other points to note:

  • Viewers that use legacy profiles (most TPVs still have that option), are not restricted by your profile settings at https://my.secondlife.com/settings/privacy. These only work when viewing your web profile.
  • Even if "Show in Search" was "fixed" to totally remove your name from search results, you would still be able to be found by searching via the avatar picker. This is the window that opens when you go to share an inventory folder or go to help -> Report Abuse & choose an avatar name.
Avatar names will never be hidden here because it's important to be able to file AR's or find an avatar name to add to group ban lists, land ban or allow lists etc.
Most viewers also allow you to bring up the profile from the search results here too.

So tl/dr:
You can never fully remove your avatar name from being found by others on Second Life.
Your full profile information (apart from interests if they are hidden) will always be visible to anyone logged into SL on a viewer that still uses legacy profiles.

After some digging I think I found the one place that "Show in search" actually makes a difference.

The old search results at http://world.secondlife.com/resident/a20e5d25-8099-4240-9b06-dcdd2e2af199
I believe this is what Nya Linden was refering to in that quote I posted above.
I need to test but I think that when Show in Search is enabled, the full profile information will display here, like mine: http://world.secondlife.com/resident/2e255955-e183-48c4-b9f9-1cd1b80db94e
Whereas when Show in Search is disabled, only the profile image, name & age will be visible, like yours here: http://world.secondlife.com/resident/a20e5d25-8099-4240-9b06-dcdd2e2af199
