 Description  « Hide
Edit: Firefox users on all OS's (XP, MAC, Vista, Linux) blocked from accessing all or part of the blogs. Problems also seen with Safari.
-------
The blog hung after posting, twice. Firefox/Mac. Just get a blank page back with "Done" in the status line.

I think the fancy Javascript is probably responsible. It looks nifty to have turn right into a smiley, and so on, but it doesn't really provide significant benefits. Simplify simplify simplify.

Additional problems: the frame vanished from around the comments, had to force reload to get it back. More appended in comments.

Weird - a bunch of us are using FF/Mac (including me) and we haven't seen this at all.
Do you think it might be extension-related?
Was it always the same page you were posting to? (if so, which?)

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 25/Feb/09 03:03 PM
I only tried to post a comment in response to M's blog entry about a day in the office.

The only extension I have installed is Flashblock.

I am posting from behind a corporate firewall, one that I can't control, so it could be the proxy triggering some timing problem.

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 25/Feb/09 03:19 PM - edited
Argent as with WEB-983 it may very well be a problem on your end, I can't reproduce this either.

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 25/Feb/09 03:21 PM
Argent, have you tried Safari and any difference on that?

Yoz Linden added a comment - 25/Feb/09 03:49 PM
I've got Flashblock as well, and there isn't any Flash in the pages (apart from blog posts with embedded movies) so I doubt it's that.

Ceera Murakami added a comment - 25/Feb/09 08:13 PM
I just tried Safari 3.2.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.6, and was able to post to the "Welcome to Eureka" blog entry. Also tried testing from Mac OS X 10.5.6 and FireFox 3.0.6, and that worked fine.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 26/Feb/09 04:57 AM
Well, I can't control what the firewall is doing. I don't have this problem with other secondlife.com sites. In fact, I don't have this problem with other sites, period. It may be some incompatibility between the firewall and blogs.secondlife.com but if so it's one that's unique to blogs.secondlife.com.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 26/Feb/09 08:50 AM
First thing that happened in Safari, viewing the first page of the blog, I got:

"FEATURED
Failed to render this widget. An unexpected error has occured."

Reloading made it come up.

I suspect that $VBC's firewall makes the occasional attempt to load secondary content fail, so a site that uses AJAX or similar active content technologies heavily will have problems.

Posting from Safari works.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 26/Feb/09 01:10 PM
I've seen one comment about posting from Safari failing, changing title.

Yoz Linden added a comment - 26/Feb/09 01:13 PM
The new blog servers are being hosted by Jive - this may be relevant. Can you browse and use jivesoftware.com okay?

Also, do you have any indication of which widget is failing to render?

If you don't mind, since we've had no other reports of these problems, I'm going to downgrade this to Major.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 26/Feb/09 01:25 PM - edited
The widget that failed to render was the entire content of the "featured" section. Reloading makes it show up.

It's completely impossible for me to post using Firefox. I can edit a message, but when I submit I just get a blank page.

I'm not sure I can test posting at Jive's site, do they have a test blog?

Edit: the blog is HOSTED at jive? So I just entered my SL password into a third-party site when I logged on to blogs.secondlife.com? o_O;;;

Marianne McCann added a comment - 26/Feb/09 02:18 PM - edited
Clearly related, I think.

I was able to access the blogs.secondlife.com site yesterday morning, and left a comment on the LDPW blog.

Since then, when I use Safari to surf the blogs.secondlife.com domain I get a message like this:

Safari can't open the page.
Safari can't open the page "https://blogs.secondlife.com/" because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection, which sometimes occurs when the server is busy. You might be able to open the page later.

This applies to any page I attempt to access, and effectively bars me from the new blogs using my browser combination of choice.

Safari Version 3.2.1 (5525.27.1)
Mac OS 10.5.5 (Build 9G55)

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 26/Feb/09 07:13 PM
Yoz, Argent, others, Please take a look at WEB-989, I think it may be related. For some stupid reason the blog requires secure access just to view it as well as comment and login so if you have filtered or resricted access on port 443 then you could have problems accessing the blog.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 27/Feb/09 03:50 AM
I've never found any indication previously that $VBC's firewall blocked port 443. Proxied, sure, but the "CONNECT" proxy method is over a decade old and works reliably on any firewall I've used (including bits I've written myself).

Napili Sands added a comment - 27/Feb/09 08:37 AM - edited
I'm using Firefox 3.06. All the blog links, including all RSS links, fail.

"Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again."

I have no problem connecting to jivesoftware.com

SuezanneC Baskerville added a comment - 28/Feb/09 11:16 AM
On one machine, I can't see the blog page at all.

"Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again." also.

This is on FF3.1b2 or Flock.

On the other machine the same browser accesses the blog just fine.

Sharcel Bellic added a comment - 04/Mar/09 10:10 PM
I get the same error as Napili and SuezanneC.

For extra aggravation, I get this error when I click on the link in the email that announces a new comment. So I'm getting the announcements but can't use them.

Napili Sands added a comment - 05/Mar/09 03:08 PM - edited
I found a way to fix and reproduce the problem, at least with Firefox.

I'm using session manager addon for Firefox, now at v3.07.
I had a large number of tabs open. so I closed them all, still could not open the blogs. I closed Firefox, reopened it with nothing else open and I was able to load and navigate all the blogs pages and RSS links.

I restored my previous session and pow! blogs wouldn't load, even if I closed all the tabs. My session Manager was at v0.6.3.5 so I updated it to 0.6.4.3, same problem.

Starting with a fresh restart of Firefox, I opened a dozen or more tabs, blogs still open ok. Saved the session, restarted Firefox, all the tabs opened ok, all the blogs links work.

So I went to another machine, installed Firefox and Session Manager addon. I was able to open all the blogs links just fine.
I took the session file from the first computer, put it on the second one. When I loaded it, I was no longer able to open any of the blogs links.

I hope this helps, but I don't know how this would apply to Safari.
I haven't tried posting, but at least I can get into the site now.

Qie Niangao added a comment - 08/Mar/09 01:36 PM
I am really not sure that posting is what triggers this. At least for me, I can post without getting stuck into the "Connection Interrupted" error condition, and I'm almost sure I've gotten into the condition without posting. This is with Firefox 3.0.5 on Linux. Napili's "session" experience coincides with mine: once I start getting the error, the only way I've found to get access again is by quitting Firefox without saving the session.

If this is as widespread as I think, it's pretty serious: members of the general public will just assume that blogs.secondlife.com has been taken off the net.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 08/Mar/09 02:29 PM - edited
Removed "posting" from the title, thanks Qie.

SuezanneC Baskerville added a comment - 08/Mar/09 04:25 PM
There's a thread in a jivesoftware jivespace support forum about connectivity issues with blog comment errors at http://www.jivesoftware.com/jivespace/message/135997#135997 . The problem there was with a software setting called jiveURL not being set correctly.

Cristiano Midnight says he had similar problems with his site at one time and it turned out to be a hardware problem with a Cisco router, which suggests that maybe LL needs among other things to do to contact jivesoftware and see if they can check for hardware problems on their end.

SuezanneC Baskerville added a comment - 08/Mar/09 11:15 PM
I've now had the error when trying to post a comment after successfully logging in. You lose the text you had entered in your comment.

Yoz Linden added a comment - 09/Mar/09 12:43 AM
SuzanneC: thanks for unearthing that support discussion. However, the jiveURL property is definitely set correctly on our setup.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 26/Mar/09 02:56 PM
Updating to "critical" since they have moved discussion to the blogs, but clicking the "join the discussion" button just moves the button to the middle of the page and leaves it sitting there until I click it again, whereupon it moves back to the bottom of the page.

CarlCorey Colman added a comment - 27/Mar/09 01:59 PM
Firefox on Windows. I can't get to the blog at all – I get "the connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" on any attempt to access the blog. Access via IE is successful.

I get this too occasionally, I don't post to the blogs, I only get it just browsing the blogs.

Clearing cookies for blogs.secondlife.com fixes it.

I get this error consistently:

"Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again."

If I clear all blogs.secondlife.com cookies. I can see a page of the blog. but as soon as I click a link I get the error again. I thought for a while the blog was simply down. Only when I tried to access site using IE was I able to see the recent posting about AO policy and the discussion.

It's unacceptable that you LL posts important policy issues in a format that is actually unreachable for users. Consider making critical policy information available in plain html formats so that EVERYONE can see it.

I don't get the connection issue, I do however get the related web-1037.

Additionally it simply crashes firefox, when it happens again I'll try and get more info,

I also find that I click the login link and the page seems to reload but the login box doesn't appear, clicking the link again produces the login box.

Just crashed on me when I was replying in the blog, crash details:

I've found out why the login link sometimes seems unresponsive, it's on a particularly busy thread and it doesn't seem to respond to a click until the whole thread has loaded.

Now I'm seeing links on the blog that are redirecting to some random file on C:\ in the Windows profile of someone named "Cat".

No, it's not my computer. I'm seeing this on a Mac. The SOURCE CODE of the page says ''...<div class='jive-rendered-content'><p><base href="file://C:\Users\Cat\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Stationery\"></base> ... ''

THIS IS STARK RAVING BONKERS

Found and fixed. It appears to have been inserted in a comment; no idea how it got in there, but the HTML sanitisation routine clearly needs some education. Am on it.

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 18/Jun/09 05:48 PM
May I add that HTML sanitization should probably be "default closed" rather than "default open", and only allow HTML that you specifically know the HTML editor will generate... otherwise you're dancing with the exploit fairy.

Maggie Darwin added a comment - 22/Jun/09 02:48 PM
Copy of some email traffic between me and Blue Linden:

>...please send your computer specs to me at blue@lindenlab.com with a description of the specific issues you are seeing.
> Hopefully we'll be able to reproduce them here

The worst issue is notification emails being sent for comments that
subsequently don't appear on the web page for many hours. This has
happening with "Welcome to Zindra", the secondary SLV 1.23 thread and
the post on the new Airport in Nautilus.

Once a comment has been submitted, it should appear on the website
immediately....in fact I was accustomed to seeing my own comments as
they were posted. I'd guess either the "last comment" number is
getting corrupted or there's a stale cache between your server and the
outside net.

Possibly related is the situation of posts that send out an email
notifying an update to the original Linden post, but with no obvious
difference in the text. After this goes out, all the comment/edit
links disappear from the page, no comments can be added, and the page
displays "log in to enter a comment" even for logged in users. But no
text announcing that comments have been closed appears until much
later. In fact, I don't recall seeing an update email later containing
the comments closed announcement, although eventually the announcement
appears.

I know I'm not alone in seeing this problem. It happens for me on
Chrome 2.0.172.31 and Firefox 3.0.11 on both XP Professional and Vista
Home.

I'll copy this to the pJIRA if you'll tell me the issue number.

snickers snook added a comment - 22/Jun/09 05:36 PM
I am having the same problems as Maggie. Using Firefox 3.0.11 on Windows XP Pro.

@Yoz Linden - Am I really giving my password to a 3rd party site by posting on the blogs?? If so, that's just crazy!! SL accounts have RL $ associated with them. If this is true, I'm using my alt who I'll take down to $0L.

The blogs are pretty and shiny but almost useless as a communication tool. After 3 replies, threaded view is unreadable. Flat view takes forever to load on long threads. What's the point? Discourage resident feedback through gradually ramping up the annoyance factor??

Qie Niangao added a comment - 23/Jun/09 03:19 AM
On the off-chance that it's related to the dreaded "Connection Interrupted" defect, I'm now seeing "Login to post a comment" at the top of the discussion on https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/land/blog/2009/06/15/welcome-to-zindra , even though I'm already logged on. If I click it, it produces the logon page, after which it's exactly the same: "Login to post a comment."

Valerius Constantine added a comment - 23/Jun/09 10:36 PM
I'm running into problems using the "flat" view on the blog discussions- I'm using Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer both and running into the problem with both. Originally there were page numbers in "flat" view, and I could use bookmarks to "keep my place" in the discussion. Now, as soon as I reply to a comment, the page takes multiple minutes to update, and it has all the messages in the thread on a single page with the messages arranged in numerical order.

sometimes, returning to my bookmarked "place" will re-set this, but then, when I go to the correct page it with give a "there are no posts in this thread" message when there were a dozens of posts after that page before I replied.

I have also run into the "replies sometimes take forever to post to the blog" problem as well.

With only a week left before the great Zindra swap begins, this issue needs to be dealt with soonest. We cannot have the few Zindra related discussion threads broken at a time when people are supposed to be learning about the deadline to request a land swap.

I have experienced the same issue ever since the "new" blogs went online a couple of months ago. On my previous computer I either got a blank page or a 404 error when trying to access it, on my current computer I get the "connection interrupted...." message when using Mozilla Firefox - pages do show with IE though (which I don't really like to use).

The only workaround so far that seems to work for me (I have only tested it for 2 days, so not granted that it will continue to work) is to first clear cookies, close and re-open browser and then block cookies from https://blogs.secondlife.com/ in your browser settings. Since I've changed my cookies' settings accordingly it lets me browse it just fine. I will update here should it stop working again!

Yoz Linden added a comment - 02/Nov/09 11:44 AM
Resolving as "Needs More Info" because there are a bunch of different issues here, none of which we've been able to repro so far. That's not to say they're not happening, nor that they don't need to be fixed; just that having them all together in one issue doesn't help us tackle each different problem. Some of them may be related to the site's use of SSL (which is odd, since that shouldn't in itself be a problem) but they may disappear when we move to unified login.

If you're still having problems accessing or posting to the blog, please file a new issue with a more specific summary, and we'll take a look.
