 Description  « Hide
The following 3rd-party registration pages appearing in the "Select a Community" page are bugged. Remove them from the listings, or contact the 3rd party to correct the problem. https://join.secondlife.com/ occasionally redirects to this page, apparently at random. There is no way to link to it directly. The page heading says "Second Life Registration: Select a Community" followed by "Join a Community".

community=brasil redirects to - http://www.secondlifebrasil.com.br/cadastro/avatar.aspx - Server Error
community=isn redirects to - http://isnvirtualworlds.com/reg/reg_new/slreg.php - surname dropdown is empty
community=netherlands redirects to - http://www.nl0031.nl/registreren/second_life/second_life/ - registration page is for a website forum, not a Second Life account
community=serakorea redirects to - http://security.serakorea.com/Membership/Registration/Default.aspx - this page does not appear to be a Second Life regapi

Alternatively, end the "four to six weeks" turned 1yr, 6mo long "Select a Community" experiment now , preferably in failure. (What experiment, you ask? see http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/06/05/an-experiment-for-new-residents-community-registration-portals/ and http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2007/06/06/whats-a-community-registration-portal/ ) I never liked how some new users are directed to this extraneous page when they are just trying to create a new account. The "Skip This Step" button is not obvious. I suspect it is not obvious to new users that this step is not mandatory. And, users are directed to this page or not, at random. This is especially troublesome if the u= tag is used for the (currently broken) Refer-A-Friend system. If the user click on community, the referral is not recorded. (even if the system were currently working in general). There is no way to skip directly to the real page or directly to the community selection page, for that matter.

But, if you keep this experiment running, or gasp decide to make it a permanent feature, I recommend you clean up the dead links once in a while. ISN's page has been broken for months. Don't count on the community to alert you to it. Brand-new users don't use JIRA! I only notice the bug because of SLNameWatch.com, and I probably won't be motivated to make a similar JIRA entry in the future.

I find the "Select a community" option interesting, especially for people who don't speak English. I think it's rather important to fix this issue to make the sign-up process as smooth as possible.

I wish I could alert Glenn Linden to check out this PJIRA entry, but blog comments are closed.

Thanks a lot for this information.
Katrin Linden here - I manage the Community Gateway program at Linden Lab.

We will go-live with the updated registration pages by middle of January and all links should be fine.

In regard to the links above:

  • I will try to get the Mainland Brasil link fixed asap (on the old registration pages for Community Gateways) thanks a lot for this valid information
  • ISN Virtual Worlds got fixed as already commented
  • The 0031 Dutch community requests a login to their web portal before joining 0031 in Second Life. This is ok. Once the user has registered to their community, they will start the Second Life registration process.
  • Sera Korea is a Global Provider and it is a registration page - I assume similar to the Dutch community

In the new registration and Community Gateway process we are about to launch, the user will be asked if they want to join a community - if they agree only then they will be transferred to a CG selection page - showing only those CGs that offer the language the user has selected in the Second Life registration process. (If no community pfferes the language selected - then all English speaking communities will be listed)
Also we will not send the user away from the Second Life webpage anymore if they choose to be a member of a community. Instead, the user selects a community and after downloading the client, they will be transferred directly to the welcome area of the Community Gateway member.
