Thanks so much for the heads up Katharine! We'll take a look at it.
Is there any progress on this issue?
It appears that join.secondlife.com does not respond at all on port 40443. This is identical to its response on any port other than 80 or 443, suggesting that the server(s) may be behind a firewall set not to respond on any ports, including 40443 (maybe? I'm just guessing here.) Since the server is completely non-responsive, I assume that MG signups do not go through the caps server on port 40443 of join.secondlife.com at all. cap.secondlife.com, unsurprisingly, does not recognise the capability 8b9b9ff3-c000-47c5-b2b4-599b0b69d67f (which is the one always used for signups). I would have hoped that "nobody can sign up" would be a reasonably high priority issue. Even if that's restricted to the set of people under 18 outside the US. It's certainly frustrating. Is there any idea when this will be fixed - I have a very persistant daughter who is waiting to sign up and it would be nice to know if the timescale is in terms of dats, weeks or months - if it is months she will probably find somethng else to do!
Thanks This is stupid, this issue was addressed ages ago and is still unresolved, my brother really wants to start playing teen sl but cant because of this issue, get it sorted Linden.
My son is having the same problem. I put in a support ticket with Linden Labs and their "solution" was to use Firefox when signing up for the account, and if that didn't work to send them legal identification of his birthdate, such as his birth certificate so they could set him up manually. Firefox didn't work, so I attached a scan of his birth certificate to the support ticket. That was almost 3 weeks ago and I have still heard nothing back.
I don't know if this is exactly the same issue, but my 13 year old son has been trying to create an account with no success. He gets as far as step 6 above - create account - and gets the message that he can't create an account because he needs to be 13 years old or over (which he is!). He even tried again with a birth date that would have made him 15, and got the same message.
Adding to what Katharine was saying, yes that port/confirmation link for paypal is completely unresponsive...However I did get the email to work by typing in https://join.secondlife.com/checkEmail.php
And notice it cannot even load the failure_url...and Ive tried on multiple computers, with and without routers/firefalls.. If Linden Labs doesn't want more profits, or users, thats alright for me, but atleast feel sorry for the people who have problems, and don't know how/if they can submit a support ticket and end up ditching (T)SL altogether. Also, it took about 5 support tickets, and 4 days to get my account registered through a support staff member. One ticket reply per day... And for the people googling this problem/for solutions, heres where you can get help http://secondlife.com/support/ EDIT: Wow this is insane, you guys have gotten this report in late, July..and 3.5 months later its still not fixed. Pretty pathetic if you ask me...i mean if it was a thing that people could bypass, whatever, but its not, so its not acceptable to keep it on "hold" this long. Seriously, I mean, its like the most important thing to have at a stable/bug free state and yet Linden Labs is too scared or lazy to fix such a high priority item. This should have be priority: showstopper...because it is. Nobody can join TSL without a support ticket, period. I can also confirm that this is an issue. The link for Paypal hung indefinitely each time I tried to create an account. We tried it in both Firefox and IE several times with no success.
Same issue here! (ITALY)
When are you going to fix it?? Updated to "Showstopper" priority, as it is not a "rare bug"..instead does not let people register/login!
Soliciting for a Linden comment on this issue. Someone, somewhere within LL's walls has to understand how the user account creation system is supposed to function, and should be able to test for the EXACT failure point, as well as implement the appropriate fix process.
Katharine, you have support from the Main Grid on this. Can confirm that we too have experienced this trying to create an account for the 13yo, here in Australia. This must be an issue that is losing potential revenue, as the 13yo spends more on Habbo each month than I would in SL. She has pocket money to spend.
Hi everyone. Could we please hurry up in fixing this issue. My son is very interested in joining Second Life and more importantly AjaxLife is down until you fix the issue. Please LL, I am on my knees BEGGING YOU!!!
Can confirm problems trying to make this work in UK also
Now it seems Katharine Berry has taken down Ajaxlife.net in protest. Her client was an essential resource for those behind corporate firewalls and those who wanted to use their iPhones for access. So One wonders if Linden Labs is intentionally ignoring this issue now? If so, it would be ironically conforming to the stereotypically teenaged response. (With regrets to all reasonable teenagers).
Well If LL cant be bothered to fix the teen web registration, it will only lead to more teens registering in the adult grid......and as long as the teen grid registration is Fouled up, I personally would not take any action against such teens.
LL cant have it both ways saying teens only on the ten grid, but then not let them register, It looks like this issue is still not fixed, I have a brother that wants to sign up for second life and we are experiencing this issue, I have a second life account myself and own a Sim and pay quite a bit of Tier Monthly to you guys and to see this not being fixed for so long is so sad, please fix this my brother really really wants to sign up and I don't want him to go on to the Main Grid!! This is not fair to offer a service and people can not sign up correctly!!!!!!!!
I was wondering why there was a rash of teens on the main grid - now I know why.
Probably the worst thing about this issue is that those who it affects - the teens who can not make accounts - aren't being represented here. There would be ten times the number of votes for this issue of all of the teens who couldn't create accounts could vote.
I don't know if this is 100% true or not but I have heard a rumor that the Teen Grid Registrations were disabled due to LL not wanting any more sign ups on it and halting the project.. Again this is just what I heard from a good friend of mine which has actually been true about other things. " Hope this isn't true myself because my brother really wants to sign up and he can't make an account still "
Another 13 year old girl found in the main grid. I do my best to explain teen grid, she does her best to show me what idiots adults are. She walks me through the impossibility of a teen signing up to teen SL. Need paypal to sign up from outside the states (lols, as if many teens are likely to have that, teens dont have bank accounts at that age here, or at least most dont) only to find out if they did have it, its borked. That leaves main grid, or main grid. Vote added to issue.
How can this possibly still be broken??
It is impressive how slow they are at fixing showstopper bugs that "demand immediate attention from Linden Lab."
Incidentally, Homer, being under 18 and having a PayPal account is a violation of the PayPal terms of service. The discussion of how little sense it makes to only be allowed to sign up on the Teen Grid after proving you're over 18 (several times, in fact, since they only accept[ed] verified PayPal accounts) is for another time. For now, it'd be nice if what they claim to work actually worked. Bug report Created: 21/Jul/08 03:42 PM
Priority: Showstopper Result: reduced income for LL by limiting the number of potential customers to give them money. Action: apparently none it seems. Perhaps this kind of response is why nobody I talk to in RL takes Secondlife seriously as anything other than a toy for freaks and geeks. All the marketing jargon and flashy new homepages in the world are not going to help if you can't even enable a large chunk of your audience to sign up - all because of a simple caps request. This is taking way too long to fix. It makes me wonder if LL is planning on canceling the Teen Grid, because if signups were broken for even ten minutes on the Main Grid, they would instantly put it at the top of the list of things to fix. We've been sitting here waiting for something or someone to help us for 18 months now, without any advancement or sign of hope. It's so much easier to just register on the Main Grid and not bother with the runaround you get from the Teen signup, and that makes me wonder about how child-friendly LL is really being.
I dont know what is going on with this issue, But personally, I feel that Teen Secondlife needs more Verification Methods. To make an adult secondlife account, You Do not need to provide any ID, you can simply just walk right in. For the teen grid you have to use an ID, I would Sugguest Offering Registration VIA Paypal, Click 2 buy, Creditcard Number, Social Security number, Birth Citificate + phonecall, or something, besides just paypal Registrations. This issue should be resolved as soon as possible, because it has been going on for 18 months I heard. Thank You.
The problem is still there. I chatted with LL online support about this, and they said the only thing my son could do would be to call them (we are from Finland) which I didn't want him to do. Now I even might try it to see if it would really work
But I agree with what was said here earlier, that if teens can't register to hte Teen Grid, they are likely to lie about their age and register to the Main Grid. If it really is true, that LL does not want non-school-project-teens from outside the US to join the Teen Grid, they should say so on the teen.secondlife.com website, and not make people waste time in trying to do something that is immopsible to accomplish. Quote from the webite: "Join Teens from all over the globe in Teen Second Life - a 3D virtual world created by you and for you. Create, learn new skills, start a business, meet new people – it's your world, your imagination." Philip Rosedale spoke on Metanomics recently and has said on their that the problem is now fixed.
http://metanomics.net/archive011909 It is indeed fixed, and has been for about two weeks.
Closing this issue as resolved.
Define fixed please. From a very basic point of view, unless sign up has fundamentally change, it would appear to still be broken here (Australia) in that I can not reach the port specified.
server4600:~$ ping join.secondlife.com — join.secondlife.com ping statistics — server4600:~$ sudo tcpdump host join.secondlife.com & It flips over to webster3 as well, and gets no response. If it still requires paypal verfied account that is limited to 18yo+........ but thats another issue. Having this problrm today in trying to create an account for my 13yr old daughter. It won't go past the paypal confirmation page. I get registration unavailable everytime even though I got billing account successful.
I tried 2 accounts and the same thing on both... I just tried creating an account for my 13 yr old daughter and it gets me past the paypal page but I get a Registration NOT available page. Tried this twice. even phoned support and they told me to create a ticket but since I saw this one already created, am adding to it, I an in the USA
LadyJane, the Support Ticket referred to in your phone call can be submitted on this page http://secondlife.com/support/
*Please see this Knowledge Base article
Thank you : ) Is this issue still (or again?) reproducible? Being an adult, I can't test it without giving false data.
I'm interested in knowing the status of this one, because I regularly run into teenagers when volunteering on Help Islands and I'd rather refer them to support directly than to a non-working subscription process. Needless to say that if this still isn't fixed, fixing it should be much more scalable than having support set up each and every non-US teenSL account manually. |
