Updated figures with 2008-07-25 values to further support the case for name rotation.
Upgrading to major as this bug negatively impacts the experience of new-comers to Second Life, and may turn people off to Second Life before they even start.
51,000 registered accounts with the last name "Magic".. seriously, it's WAY past time.
Looking through the complete list at http://slnamewatch.com/index.php?action=list_records&status_filter=all&sort_order=ASC&order_by=last_name
Wouldn't those be some really cool names? (the best i can do is guess at the cause of this issue, and this solution addresses all of the possibilities i can come up with without more feedback.) This is very important if using SL screen as you have to type in a first name and then go for what surnames are available with it. I could not believe that as rare a name as Marius is not available with any surname. I was however pleased that Magic stayed long enough for me to get a male clothes designing alt called Vashan Magic! Until this is fixed I recommend using L Word registration where you get to see all surnames and you can get the new avatars via the Library once you first log in.
On Saturday, 2008-08-08, about 21:00 UTC, Linden Lab released 88 new names into the public pool and retired zero. This issue is resolved for now.
If you guys release 88 new names every two weeks or so, you should be in great shape. P.S. - COLORS! It's time to release new last names again!
Whoops, that thread was a necro.
