Update 2008-07-25 New Names Last Released: 70 Days Ago. No publicly available last name has fewer than 2,000 registrants under it, except Pond. Average Number of Agents per active last name (excluding GossipGirl and Pond): 8,070. If you compare this figure to the one I posted 25 days ago, you can see that these 100 names are becoming dense quickly.

Last name Magic has 51,163 active accounts under it (source http://slnamewatch.com/last_name_Magic.html), making it among the 20 all-time most heavily used last names in Second Life (source http://slnamewatch.com/index.php?action=list_records&status_filter=all&sort_order=DESC&order_by=usage_count).

These figures do not include banned/canceled accounts whose names no longer appear in in-world search, but increase name density by an unknown amount. These figures do not include interrupted registrations which also increase name density for no good reason. (see [WEB-241] https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-241 ).

Based on your last name FAQ (https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=4195), I realize there is no set schedule to releasing last names. However, it also says "Last names are currently retired manually after being picked in the high hundreds on average..." All of the currently available last names meet this criteria.

--------

New Names Last Released 45 Days Ago (source: http://www.slnamewatch.com). However, at that time you only released 100 new names to replace the over 200 you retired that day (see https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-678). This means that these names filled up extremely quickly. At this time. none of them have fewer than 1000 registrants under them. Average usage is 4,800 per last name when you subtract GossipGirl, Pond, and Messenger which are not available through the official registration portal.
Please retire the current last names and release some new ones. Thank you.

Updated figures with 2008-07-25 values to further support the case for name rotation.

Upgrading to major as this bug negatively impacts the experience of new-comers to Second Life, and may turn people off to Second Life before they even start.

51,000 registered accounts with the last name "Magic".. seriously, it's WAY past time.

Looking through the complete list at http://slnamewatch.com/index.php?action=list_records&status_filter=all&sort_order=ASC&order_by=last_name I'm surprised to see you guys haven't done colors, yet! You know, red, blue, violet, slate, mauve, cornflower, cobalt... open up a box of crayons or visit the local art supply store... thats gotta be good for a few hundred totally awesome names, right? Here's a list you can copy and paste! http://www.w3schools.com/HTML/html_colornames.asp

Wouldn't those be some really cool names?
Bound to not offend anyone...
Not subject to copyright ...
Not likely to be held exclusively by famous people..
Not held overwhelmingly by any particular ethnic group.

(the best i can do is guess at the cause of this issue, and this solution addresses all of the possibilities i can come up with without more feedback.)

This is very important if using SL screen as you have to type in a first name and then go for what surnames are available with it. I could not believe that as rare a name as Marius is not available with any surname. I was however pleased that Magic stayed long enough for me to get a male clothes designing alt called Vashan Magic! Until this is fixed I recommend using L Word registration where you get to see all surnames and you can get the new avatars via the Library once you first log in.

On Saturday, 2008-08-08, about 21:00 UTC, Linden Lab released 88 new names into the public pool and retired zero. This issue is resolved for now.

If you guys release 88 new names every two weeks or so, you should be in great shape.

P.S. - COLORS!
