Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-11701

 Description  « Hide
When I access friends page in past 2 days, it now shows nobody is currently on, however, when I log I see many avatars on. This is different from recent behavior where site shows "We are having poblems" which was resolved in 2-3 days. Now i shows its apparently working correctly...AND ITS NOT.

Repeatability is 100% (i.e. it does this every time).

I just had a very similar problem; while the viewer was telling me I had 6 friends online, I visited the webpage and was told I only had 3 friends online. Ontop of that, I had removed one of these three people from my friends list back on February 4th, so there's no reason their name should've come up on the webpage.

Also related, I visited a couple other pages and then went back to the friends online page, only to be told I have 1 friend online (I actually have 8) and "Friends Online is temporarily disabled due to technical difficulties. We'll re-enable it as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience." When I refresh the page, it tells me 7 of the 8 online friends. I've been having this error for about a week now, being told that the page is disabled at random times, and reloading the page gives me a list of online friends.

Canon Eichel added a comment - 07/Mar/08 05:15 AM
For several weeks I have found "Friends Online" to be unreliable. I also have a friend who told me that I appeared to be online when I was, in fact, not in SL.

Yesterday I had one friend who's name appeared on the "Friends Online" listing for over 24 hours, even though she was not in SL for all that time.

I have tried closing Internet Explorer and reopening only to get the same results. I have also tried "refreshing" the page.Interestingly, when I repeatedly push refresh, sometimes the list of online friends changes several times over a short period of time.

Clearly this feature is NOT WORKING PROPERLY.

This feature is very important to me, for privacy reasons, and I would assign it a medium-high priority.

Candice Halfpint added a comment - 07/Mar/08 05:40 AM
Hey, the friends feature isn't working - i thought one of my friends is online and she wasn't and this has happened several times lately. Also, I had freinds who were inworld but the friends online did not show them.

What's up with this. When will it be fixed?

Pixie Heinkel added a comment - 07/Mar/08 05:44 AM
The ability to track friends is important for a number of reasons. This thread should be bumped to high priority.

There are a number of bugs related to friends, not just here (Friends Online), but also inworld: when I uncheck friends who I do not want to see me as being online, they nevertheless DO see me, so this is another bug.

sabrinaq paperdoll added a comment - 07/Mar/08 07:32 PM
Last 24 hours friends page has shown old data, these people are not online when I log in. I have also had the same problem with people on my friends list being able to see me when I think I have removed their ability to do so. This has been going on since at least September!! I have figured out that if they log on AFTER me they can still see me, even if they are unchecked. If I log on and they are already in-world, that is the only time they will not see me. PLEASE fix this Lindens!

marcello berjis added a comment - 09/Mar/08 07:02 PM
My "Friends Online" feature has been frozen on the same list of Avatars for over a week now - regardless of whether they are online or not. Very frustrating!

Eponine Dench added a comment - 10/Mar/08 11:24 AM
My friends online list alternates between two old innacurate lists of friends and the notice that no friends are online. This happens when I refresh the screen. I tried clearing the cache of my browser.. both Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer on two different computers. My computer does not seem to be the issue. This is a high priority issue for me and has been a problem since late last week.

Laila Kumaki added a comment - 10/Mar/08 03:13 PM
Today this is affecting me as well. When checking the page in the latest version of Firefox, the friends currently displayed as online are seemingly random and tend to be mostly incorrect.

Blinking2342 Blinker added a comment - 11/Mar/08 05:18 AM - edited
Well I discovered this issue between the 5th and 6th of march, because I was playing around with grabbing the online/offline information from the web page into a local file.
It worked perfectly until this date.

But from this date I got old outdated data, cached data, wrong information of even that I dont have any friends on, even if I have and so on...

On top of this: my script writes the current position of friends that allow me to see them on the map into the file. This is done by analyzing the link for the particular person. i.e. secondlife://Island/X/Y. But from that date on in almost any cases I just see the X and Y coordinates without the island, not very helpful though.

So please fix this issue.

PS: Whats also interesting is, that it seems to be that old avatars who allow someone to see him on the map show up with a link on the webpage, but newer ones dont!

kaya varriale added a comment - 11/Mar/08 02:34 PM
Yes, please fix this issue as well! I have had the same problems as has been described by others. Thank you very much...

ton bright added a comment - 13/Mar/08 09:00 AM
Same on my side, also the information on where someone is is not correct. i see al the time that my friend is in ///106/160. a non resisting area. And she is not even logged. When i change from txt only to pictures al over sudden other friends are on line. In fact i never get the right information it is now for at least 1.5 weeks.

Totally Unsustainable added a comment - 13/Mar/08 12:28 PM
Also experiencing this issue, refreshing the page seems to return random historical sets of who was online once upon a time. I also find people with locations showing such as ///171/162 with no sim name. Sometimes a refresh will even send me to the "SL is under maintenance" status page. Please repair this page or shut if off again, its useless in its current state.

Blinking2342 Blinker added a comment - 13/Mar/08 06:38 PM - edited
Right now it seems that it gets a bit better...
The online list is correct (i.e. the same as in game) and I see the islands where friends are located.

But still there could be a caching bug somewhere cause sometimes it has older locations of friends in it...

EDIT: Now as I tried running my script last night, it turned out, that there IS still the caching problem... some of the friends where reported the whole night online, even if they weren't...

Drako Nagorski added a comment - 17/Mar/08 03:07 PM - edited
Heres the false list i have been getting for weeks:
3 of them i can see on map. i only have 3 that i can see on map as far as i can tell. they seem to show more. other people are from old lists. its been alternating from 2 possible lists (20 and 15 online) and this one (14, which is always incorrect)
  1. Alyissa Whitfield
  2. Argent Caudron
  3. BEARintheMorning Holmer
  4. Brooke Briers
  5. Case Munro
  6. DJHocking Westland
  7. DrMyEyes Snookums
  8. Essensual McMahon
  9. irobot1 Petrov
  10. Lolita Nomura
  11. Minerva Minton
  12. Mysty Oh
  13. Phantium Longwell
  14. Spirit Homewood <- he stole scripting from me BTW... abuse report never got through i guess

EDIT:Lists are length 14 and 14 (incorrect), 15, 20, and 22 ATM

Blinking2342 Blinker added a comment - 18/Mar/08 02:51 PM - edited
Well it seems to me that the list of people who are reported to be online are now about 80% correct, but still, sometimes there is the caching bug, which might depend on the loadbalancing of your webservers, so it differs from IP to IP, I think.

And I can only see the island where friends are located in about 1 or 2% of refreshing the list... So it doesnt show up most of the time.

easy beardmore added a comment - 19/Mar/08 05:25 PM
I have add this same problem for the last several weeks and this is an item I use on the web site all the time. I will check friends online and it will give me a list of friends that has no bearing on whose really online. If I exit and re-enter immediately it will provide a different list seemingly at random. If I clear my browser cache it seems to have no effect on the utility of this function: stays seemingly random. Is there any idea what is wrong and when this might be fixed? Thanks.

Electron Cleanslate added a comment - 21/Mar/08 06:46 AM
When I bring up Freinds Online I see an old list with 8 friends online. Then when I refresh I see another old list with 15 friends online. When I refresh again I see another old list of 12 friends online. When I keep refreshing it seems to keep rotating through these three old lists. The Friends Online is an important part of my SL experience as I keep watching for friends with who I have business to conduct. Please Lindens give this some priority to make it work right or just take it offline until fixed and stop fooling people.

Blinking2342 Blinker added a comment - 21/Mar/08 07:16 AM
Hmm, to me it seems to be to rotate through some old lists as well, BUT: After a couple of refreshes I see a correct list of people online in most cases (unfortunately not all).

But if I am allowed to see where people are located I still see only their X,Y coordinates, not the name of the island.

kean kelly added a comment - 23/Mar/08 01:46 AM
What I find most amazing is that there in no comment what so ever on the 'friends online' page that this isn't functioning properly. Not one comment since january the 30rd.

Doris Haller added a comment - 23/Mar/08 05:46 AM
Every time I refresh I get another list.
I am also surprised that no Linden... on second thought...no, I am not suprised...

ari blackthorne added a comment - 24/Mar/08 09:09 AM
You will get a "frozen - outdated" list depending on which server you connect to.

This is getting real old and I actually depend on it for communication. Apparently, each server where these pages are served from have all "frozen" the list at different points on the calendar - so each time you connect to a different server (web10 or web21, etc.) - you'll get a different OUTDATED list. (There are friends listed as being online that are no longer in my friends list.)

However, returning to the SAME server will ALWAYS display the exact same list.
Also: if you have any friends that allow you to map them, the SLURL is whacked. It doesn't show the region name, but does show the last coordinates where they were when that server broke, for example: "secondlife:///20/37"

Please get this fixed! ACK! LOL

TesTor Hax added a comment - 24/Mar/08 10:27 AM
Apparently this is not a high priority item since there is still no one assigned to the problem.
I would like to suggest that if this feature cannot be made to work, please turn it off or remove it...

snickers snook added a comment - 24/Mar/08 04:03 PM
Borked again right now. Web shows 0 friends online but 10 friends are actually online. Friends Online USED to be pretty reliable. What's changed to make it go south??

@TestTor: Turning this feature OFF is not a good idea. Fixing it is. There are times when I am working in Photoshop and can't have the viewer open but need to contact someone when they come on.

Doris Haller added a comment - 26/Mar/08 12:18 PM
If this depends on the server you connect to, could someone please post here the server that returns the correct results?

dr snookums added a comment - 27/Mar/08 06:34 AM
Everytime you reload the page you get a different list (list that have displayed previously at different times). None are accurate. Lindens, at least do us the courtesy of saying this feature is broken, and, hey, maybe even fix it sometime this year.

Soho Waco added a comment - 27/Mar/08 07:06 AM
Hi, i have been having the same problem for weeks now. The list online and the list in game do not match and like the other comments it shows people online when they are not. This is very annoying. The page should be down for maintainence if it is not working properly as it causes alot of confusion and frustration.

lizbet lane added a comment - 27/Mar/08 12:47 PM
And, why exactly hasn't this bug been "assigned" for work yet, hm? And, although I can see that the nature of the problem might make the usual "temporarily disabled" response impossible, why hasn't there at least been a blog entry to let people know the results aren't accurate?

rube flatley added a comment - 27/Mar/08 02:12 PM
All one has to do is hit refresh to understand that the friends list doesn't work. Each time you hit refresh, it tends to change. After a few times, you start to see an apparent pattern, i.e., it will sometimes seem to cycle through a series of listings (all of which in my experience are incorrect).

Jaime Hocken added a comment - 28/Mar/08 06:28 PM
When I go to view who is online at the website in my account, It does show the wrong people online. It might be really slow to update or something. Of the ones I can map, clicking their name the link seems to be missing the SIM name which makes it so the link doesn't work.

June Oh added a comment - 30/Mar/08 08:38 AM
From the number of reporters here and the length of time this as been a problem to so many of us, along with a direct e-mail of mine to LL being dismissed, I think Linden are not bothered about this issue.
Hope I'm wrong and LL will get thier act together.

Loyal Sparrow added a comment - 30/Mar/08 09:39 AM
This is absolutely ridiculous. Friends list hasn't been working for weeks now, and LL totally ignores the issue. Someone please remind me again why I am a paying member of SL. Is the Friends List REALLY that difficult to fix? Between this issue and all the rest of the ongoing problems in SL, LL will be hard pressed to convince me to renew my membership.

jess loll added a comment - 30/Mar/08 12:41 PM
I have had the same problem for close to a month now. Right after the issue that affected everyone was fixed, my page worked for a few days, then it started acting buggy. It would list friends incorrectly, and every time I refreshed the page, the list would change. This lasted for a few more days, and since then, it constantly lists friends online as zero for all of my accounts. This is a very frustrating problem, and as has been noted, the amount of time that LL has been aware of it is disconcerting. I would suggest that everybody mention the problem to their friends, even if it does not affect them. Ask them to vote here. The more people express concern, the more likely it will be that the problem is addressed.

franke Lytton added a comment - 31/Mar/08 11:43 AM
What I have noticed is that for the friends that allow you to map them, only the first mapped entry in the list (as viewed from top to bottom) is borked (secondlife:///76/234) not showing the region name. All other entries that you have the privilege of viewing the user location are OK. That is a serious bug they've introduced and they seem to have no clue that it's there.

Gunter Gustav added a comment - 01/Apr/08 01:58 AM
For weeks now I have people on this website FL that are no friends anymore !! I mean .. nice that I still can see 'em but I guess that's not the way it's meant to be. But my friends who are on my ingame FL don't appear on the website ..or they appear from time to time, sometimes yes, sometimes no.. that's all so messed up..

joedavid Oh added a comment - 01/Apr/08 02:18 AM
From the number of comments here and the length of time this fault as
been with us I'm wondering if you at Linden are not interested.

Spank Lovell added a comment - 01/Apr/08 05:13 AM
Just to echo what several people have said here, I'm seeing multple versions of the friends list when I page refresh repeatedly.
Some of the lists that are rendered are weeks old. I dont think I've seen a correct one in over a week.

Eric Ruban added a comment - 01/Apr/08 04:44 PM
Me too, me too. It seems you have 3 sources of input required for this to work:
  • Name of resident authenticated and using the "Friends Online" page
  • Database containing that resident's friends list
  • Database listing logged-in status of all residents

The first one is correct, always, and known to the "friends online" webapp/applet/servlet/whatever.
The second one involves looking up something which is somewhat static. The set of friends
belonging to you is unlikely to change while viewing the page, since mostly you're not logged-in
or you'd be using the viewer to see friends list. Also, the names shown, although incorrect, are
always names from your set of friends.

It is the third data set which is problematic. From the correct user name, and user's friends list,
you observe incorrect statuses of "who's logged in at the moment" This is also the most dynamic
thing likely to change, and has to be looked up from a very large database, i.e. the list of EVERY
SINGLE AV currently in world. (The ones not in world we don't care about, but they may be present
as master list of all known residents)

Is this at all helping narrow down the cause of the problem?

Good luck and godspeed, "unassigned" - we are all pulling for you to try and fix this, it will
be SO appreciated as improving our quality of (second) life!

Creamy Laville added a comment - 03/Apr/08 09:04 AM
From my experience, the only time i see any friends in the list is when the sole person who allowed me to see her location is online. At this time the list seems accurate, althought the location link is incorrect.
When that person is not online, the page shows 0 friends online.
Tested on IE6 and different Opera versions, still the same.

Jasmine Chemistry added a comment - 03/Apr/08 11:38 AM
I have two avatars, and one shows friends online (outdated but it does show some), and the main avatar (Jasmine Chemistry) does not show anyone on. A couple of weeks ago, it showed a few on but it was buggy, so I pressed refreshed in the latest version of Firefox and the list changed to fewer people on. At each refresh fewer and fewer were on until I had no one listed as on – and that's how it's stayed. Once it gets to some comfortable state of wrong it just stays there. (yes, i know, why did i keep refreshing? sometimes it used to get the list back - i was hoping for that behavior)

I use this feature a lot (or I would if it were working) to decide "who" I'm going to be first when I log on. It tells me who is going to need me for various reasons so I can get to people the quickest.

"Unassigned", I also wish you to focus quickly on this issue. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who depend on this working and because they get some listings, they think it's working and it's not. There has been some upset feelings between some residents because they think another isn't telling them correctly that they are or are not on.

Please fix soon.

Nisa Maverick added a comment - 05/Apr/08 03:04 AM
I have the same problem here too the website for Friends Online is not showing correctly just alternates between old registrations.

I have been informed by Support that this is due to IE7 AND TO CHANGE MY BROWSER for goodness sake it worked perfectly before I am definately not changing my browser.

Come On LL fix this problem.

ari blackthorne added a comment - 05/Apr/08 09:41 AM
Support is blowing smoke.

I does this on ALL browsers. Though I'm personally not a fan of IE anything - it's not Internet Explorer. In my RL job - I have to use Flock, Firefox, Calypso, Safari, Camino and many others.

This is a LINDEN LAB issue - NOT a browser issue.

See my post above to see what is actually happening.

AnnaLatexa Beaumont added a comment - 07/Apr/08 02:41 AM
Same to me, with every page reload it shows a different result, even within seconds, so please fix it soon and until it is fixed set it to temporally down, please, because this is better as to show a false status.

Thank you

Kind Regards

Anna

Never thought I would write that, BUT.

currently I am experiencing some improvement! The list seems correct, even after several reloads. And on top of it, the in game link where friends are located seem to be correct.

Looks awesome so far.

But I would like to hear some official comment on this, if there was something changed and if so what! and if it is just a workaround or an improvement for longer.

EDIT: Well on some servers it shows "Object" and the correct coordinates for the in game link. But the list of people online is correct (just tested if by going on and off)

A bug was found (and fixed) that could cause friends to show as online when they had been offline for quite a while.

Fluf Fredriksson added a comment - 11/Apr/08 04:37 PM
Friends list may be reporting who's online now. (YAY)
But it still lists "Object" as the region they are in if they have "can see my location" checked.
Any chance of getting it all fixed?

Hydra Charron added a comment - 13/Apr/08 05:19 PM
No, Kip - this problem is not fixed, as of 4/16/08. I spoke by IM with several people who were shown in my friends list as offline. I'm relatively certain that they were not ALL imposters.

alexia cournoyer added a comment - 30/Apr/08 03:37 PM
my website friends online has been showing the same group of people since feb 08. Please fix this. most of the people shown aren't even on my friends list anymore - and haven't been for 2 months.

Elwin Jacobus added a comment - 22/May/08 05:09 AM
In the list of Friends online the first friend that you can see on the map always has OBJECT shown as the region they are in. Any other friends you can see on the map have a valid region shown.

Clicking on the link of the first friend (the one with OBJECT for the region) will launch the SL viewer but after logging in it will then report the region as invalid.

It is always the friend who has given you permission to see them on the map that shows up first in the list that has OBJECT listed as the region they are in.

A related, but minor, issue is that the friends online list used to show in alphabetical order. It in now in what appears to be random order.

alexia cournoyer added a comment - 30/May/08 05:59 PM
since this seems to have been ignored, how many people still have problems? mine is sort of fixed - in that i seem to have a new list.. but a couple of them are definately not online..

Whispering Hush added a comment - 01/Jul/08 10:06 PM
Changed priority to reflect urgency.

Normal
Minor loss or impairment of function, other problems which have workarounds, or issues that are extremely simple to fix.

Yak Wise added a comment - 02/Jul/08 09:41 AM
It may not be important to some people but is is critical to me...

Problem is not solved and has been existing for far too long...

Usually the first time opening of Friends Online shows:

Friends Online is temporarily disabled due to technical difficulties. We'll re-enable it as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience."

Closing the browser and reopening, gives after oneor more tries the complete list of friends

Totally Unsustainable added a comment - 02/Jul/08 11:38 AM - edited
This is beyond ridiculous now, this is an important feature of the website. Friends online has been broken and useless for around 5 months now? I suggest that LL just remove this from the website or ACTUALLY fix it.

I constantly get messages telling me that its disabled, and then a refresh will load some list of people. This is not a browser cache issue as I have tried many different browsers clearing cache in between requests.

When it does load a list, more often that not the locations for friends I am able to map is "Object"

Please fix this, or remove this feature from your website, its really just embarrassing that you have a link to a feature that has been broken for so long now.

I want to be constructive, but all the info has already been posted, and I am honestly loosing hope that this will ever be fixed.

Edit:

Ooooh we have added sorting functionality now on this broken feature

Yak Wise added a comment - 26/Aug/08 04:43 AM
The problem is only present at the servers 2, 22, and 23

https://secure-web2.secondlife.com/account/friends.php?lang=en
https://secure-web22.secondlife.com/account/friends.php?lang=en
https://secure-web23.secondlife.com/account/friends.php?lang=en

Only these servers show:
"Friends Online is temporarily disabled due to technical difficulties. We'll re-enable it as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience."

no one at LL seems to care...
How do we get a Linden on this case ????????????????

I would please like to have the Friends Online function restored to the SecondLife.com Website sooner than humanly possible. It makes it all so very much funner, you know?

0 Friends Online does not make me feel very much at all like logging in to see who is about. Actually knowing who is in world is a tremendous help for me to decide whether I want to play now, play later or play not.

The great philosopher Yoda once said, "Do or do not. There is no try."

CindyG Freck added a comment - 11/Mar/09 05:01 AM

I would be very much pleased if this issues, which must be fairly simple, would be fixed right away. It is really frustrating. I cannot understand how this could be such a tough nut to crack, as, well, the login serves keep a database of residents in world, yes? At least, they respond to regions with the change in state of the Agent, at both log-in and log-out, so, umm, I dunno... Like the King of Siam said to Anna, the English Teacher, "It is a puzzlement!" In this case, why in two worlds it could possibnly be taking so long to fix this.

Meanwhile /me logs off the website and back in, hoping to see something different.
/me will not do this twice, though, as taking the same action twice and expecting different results would be insanity.

(Of course, perhaps assigning the issue to a willilng worker at the Lab would be a good first step, maybe?)
