Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-4440

 Description  « Hide
If someone registers a Second Life name and goes to the second page of registration, (Real name, Password, etc.) but doesn't finish the second page and closes it, the name is labeled as taken and unusable even though there was never a registration confirmation email sent out. If the same person wanted to come back and finish their registration, they wouldn't be able to get the name that they were previously told was available.

Also, if someone finishes the whole registration process and a confirmation email is sent out, but the person never clicks the link to confirm their registration, or the address they had the email sent to turns out to have been discontinued, the name remains unusable, even though no one is using the name.

I propose that names that are not confirmed within a week be put back on the available names list.

Thank you for your time!

I remember that from an incident where creating an alt failed ("we are currently restricting the number of alt accounts ... yada yada" message). The name is still unavailable.

Thanks very much for reporting this! We've identified a bug that has caused a large number of accounts not to be properly reaped after the registration process timed out, and are working on a fix.

How long is the timeout (out of curiosity)? I think a friend of mine was hit by this, but I'm not sure... It became available after a couple of days.

Historically, I believe it's been a week, but not 100% sure of that.

I'm sitll waiting for a comfirmation email for a teen account ... it would be faster for me to let the kid use the adult grid, because the teen signup process isn't sending out the confirmaiton email.

This has hit me twice now. All I did was type a first name, and I hit enter instead of clicking on the 'check this name' link. This should NOT count as a registration anyway, let alone reserve the name. You should be required to click the button!

Any process on this issue? I know that you've a great many projects on your plate, but it's been a few months without any word of encouragement...

... Is there any way that normal users like me can view the workflow? Or is it all super secret Linden stuff?

Sorry for the lack of updates about this issue.
Unfortunately, this is one of those problems where a simple fix hasn't been possible, due to other entangled work. However, that doesn't mean we're just going to ignore it. We'll be able to resume work after the release of our overhauled registration system, which is due to go live very soon.

I lost the chance to register an alt under my real name and my best friend's real name because of this.

Just confirming the issue is still a big annoyance...
I tried to register an alt under a name I liked at the beginning of last week, but the 2nd page of registration didn't work that day, so after many tries of sending in the information only to get an unknown error, I had to close up for the night. Now, over a week later, it's still not available as an SL name.

Surely it was a mistake to have the system take names off the list just for filling them in on the first page?

I have created an alt...but while I can get into website I cannot get onto the main SL grid. Anyone else had this problem ? I would have liked to have kept the name, but cannot use avatar !

28/04/08 - Happily this problem now fixed by Linden Labs. I can use alt.
Thanks !

I feel compelled to add...
I'd become quite attached to the prospect of picking up this name (mostly because it had a short, appealing last name, but the exact first name was important too). Yet, by a good effort at registering the name, all I've done is (extremely counterproductively) block my own access to it.

I continued to try to claim the name from time to time, but I still have nothing beyond my nonexistent alt's calling card, and now the last name has fallen into heritage, implying that this single glitch has had a permanent effect on me. The only way it wouldn't have an everlasting effect on me and most everyone hit by it is if you sent out emails to everyone who had passed the first page, handing them a link to finish their registration on the second page (which would be a wonderful surprise for everyone, I figure).

However you do it, this is a serious issue that ought to be dealt with so I'm not left in fear of the chance that the second page stops working again.

My family are all using a new last name that is available right now. I have searched in the world and the name I want to pick is not used. But when I go to sign up this name, it says that it is already used. I know that the reason I cant register the name is because of this issue. What is the status on this issue. Yoz Linden, do you know if this is fixed. How can I verify if a name is really being used. I have searched for the name over the past 2 weeks and it still shows that no one is using the name.

Is there any one in Linden Lab I can contact to see if the name is really used. And if the name is not used, to turn it back on so it will be available.

Thanks
