 Description  « Hide
Basically what happens when I login into Second Life, I don't have much lag but after 3-5 minutes the client crashes, contentiously. I've averaged 20 crashes in under 2 hours. That's horrible considering I've lost valuable things because of the crashing. (Specifically animations that were no copy.) After Second life crashes I usually get one or more of the following happening: A blue screen that's basically telling me my computer crashed due to a memory leak, an error window pops telling me Smart Heap Library needs to be aborted because there is a memory like, or Second Life just automatically closes/crashes and I have to wait a while to log back in. I have no idea what exactly is causing the crashing but it's really frustrating. Especially when writing scripts, it's practically IMPOSSIBLE now.

If anyone could help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at the point of just uninstalling Second Life all together because it isn't worth the frustration anymore. I'm all out of answers.

Sorry about leaving alot of additional info out of the original post.

My drivers for my video card have all been updated to the latest driver available. (I forgot to add that bit in, sorry.)

I did as you asked and ran a Direct X Diagnostic and the log is attached. I also attached my Second Life crash report to this.

I also wanted to add that I've tried every viewer (RC, The regular SL Viewer, and the Onrez client) and all of them crash excessively. My settings are set to the lowest possible settings for Second Life. It didn't ALWAYS crash like this, it was only recently that it started crashing constantly.

I've looked through Norton's Security Suite and allowed access to Second Life. (I've been using a laptop practically the whole time I've been on SL and on a wireless router and never had any problems before.) I even tried disabling Norton's and it still crashes more then it should.

If you need any additional info, please let me know.

Thanks for all the suggestions and I hope we can figure out what the problem is.

I also just ran http://secondlife.com/support/systest.php this and I passed both minimum and recommended requirements.

Amaya, thank you for your feedback and your reports : )

DxDiag Report : alienware Driver Version: 6.14.0011.7528 Driver Date/Size: 6/10/2008 WHQL Logo'd: Yes

With crashes, it is usually a matter of working through possible causes

  • please clear the cache from outside Second Life [You may need to show "Show hidden files and folders".]

Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Menus and Controls > How do I clear my Second Life cache? Clearing the Cache from Outside Second Life Topic #: 4051-4234
http://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=4234

  • please go to XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Username>\Application Data\SecondLife\User_Settings [You may need to show "Show hidden files and folders".]

rename the file settings_releasecandidate to old_settings_releasecandidate

Then click on the Second Life icon

  • on the log in screen, before you connect, please go to Edit > Preferences > Graphics and set it to Low and uncheck the Custom box.
  • open Hardware Options and set Texture Memory to lower than the dedicated memory on your graphics card (probably 256)
  • open your Windows Task Manager and watch for any other programme activity while Second Life is connecting and your Inventory is loading. One cause of a regular crash 3 -5 minutes after log in, is some activity by an internet security programme
  • log into somewhere quiet and let your Inventory fully load
  • if you crash, please attach your SecondLife log and SecondLife crash reports to this issue.

Thank you : )

Speaking of "working through causes"...

VWR-3943 is probably the 1.20 version of this problem, VWR-8814 speaks to the similar 1.21 symptoms.

Ella:

Thank you for your help so far. I've cleared the cache several times over and it doesn't work either. It's just every viewer and for now I've given up until they can fix it. It's so annoying and frustrating. I've tried everything imaginable and it's just going to a dead end. I don't understand it. My laptop has 2 video cards (SLI enabled) and 2 gigs of memory alone. There is no way it's my video card unless it's my specific card or models like it. I remember when Windlight first came out and I had to choose between pretty water or pretty skies (Shaders were incompatible with each other). It was just a bug they finally fixed in the last updated version of Windlight. Maybe this is just an issue with the NVidia cards again. Please get back to me if you figure out something. Thanks again.

Amaya, from your SecondLife crash report these are the last few entries

2008-10-12T15:01:45Z INFO: LLViewerInventoryCategory::fetchDescendents: FetchInventoryDescendents capability not found. Using deprecated UDP message.
2008-10-12T15:01:45Z INFO: LLViewerInventoryCategory::fetchDescendents: FetchInventoryDescendents capability not found. Using deprecated UDP message.
2008-10-12T15:01:46Z INFO: viewer_windows_exception_handler: Entering Windows Exception Handler...
2008-10-12T15:01:50Z INFO: LLAppViewer::handleViewerCrash: Handle viewer crash entry.

This is very similar to VWR-5737 Inventory load falls back on deprecated UDP message, then the viewer looses connection with the server

It turns out that it was a networking-related issue: when downloading inventory, Second Life sends a lot of UDP packets. My wireless router detected it as an UDP flood and put the sim involved in its temporary ban list.

Amaya, please check with your router manufacturer and/or ISP for help with your network connection.

Ella:

I checked our router and we have nothing on our ban list. I find I crash more when my inventory is trying to load. As of now, my inventory is never fully loaded and when it gets close enough to loading I always crash. I'm not really sure at all what it could be.

I will try to post another crash report, does it normally update with the number of times you've crashed?

@Amaya: Try lowering your texture memory settings (under Preferences->Graphics->Hardware Options) to 256 or 128 and see if that helps. There may be some memory corruption occurring and that could possibly cause all sorts of interesting failures. We've had problems with SLI cards that were resolved by lowering the texture memory in the past.

Zen:

I tried that and it still continues to crash. I'm running out of ideas. I did try at 128mb for a while and it worked, but when i turned the shaders back on I started crashing again.

Here is a new crash report.

I've reformatted my laptop and thought maybe it was the video card drivers, well it turns out those beta drivers aren't something you really want to mess with. I rolled back my drivers, but I still continue to crash regularly.

So here's my latest crash reports.

I have this problem in Vista as well and SL is pretty much unusable.

Hi all!

1.22 is coming out in a couple of days and we have a number of fixes rolling out. Can you try this and see if it clears up this issue?

Zen Linden added a comment - 02/Dec/08 11:24 AM
@Amaya:

Crash report says it's due to something we're not handling properly in our inventory code. Two important questions before we import this. Does this still happen in 1.22 and if so, would you let us login as you in order to recreate the crash on our end?

Thanks and hope we can clear this up!
