 Description  « Hide
The viewer pauses randomly every so often for several seconds. If I wait then SL always (99% of the time) carries on without crashing once it has finished whatever it is doing.
The viewer goes blank/black if the pause lasts more than a few seconds.
The pausing varies from roughly 5 seconds to 10 seconds, but sometimes lasts a little longer.
Seems to be reading from/writing to the hard drive a lot during the pause.

I am also experiencing this issue. This happen randemly when I am panning around with the camera, when avatar is dancing or standing. The viewer will freeze for several seconds. As Kraelen explains It most cases it recover, I have occassionally had a viewer crash. I am noticing this viewer freeze and recovery more since upgrading to RC 1.21.4.98167.

I decided to have a look at my log file after it paused. As far as I can tell the problem is this:

2008-10-16T00:28:38Z INFO: LLTextureCache::purgeTextures: TEXTURE CACHE: PURGED: 1048 ENTRIES: 10876 CACHE SIZE: 301902848 MB

This appears every time it pauses. It explains the excessive harddrive activity. But I'm not sure why it would cause the entire viewer to freeze while it deletes various things. Surely it should be running in a seperate thread?

Also I'm rather confused by the cache size. I really doubt my cache is 300TB in size....

It is definitely the purging that causes the viewer to freeze up for several seconds.

2008-10-16T04:41:26Z INFO: LLTextureCache::purgeTextures: TEXTURE CACHE: PURGED: 1506 ENTRIES: 17371 CACHE SIZE: 301608960 MB

Kraelen, can you tell me what value you have for this Preference setting?
  • Preferences > Network > Disk Cache size (MB)

I always leave it at the default 500MB.

Linked to older report stating the same problem.

This problem has made the entire 1.21 series unusable for me

Mac OS 10.5.5 Nvidia 8800 with 4 gig ram on a Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 quad core.

The latest builds 1.21 builds lock up every few minutes for 30 seconds or more. Then all is fine for the next 2 minutes. This is not related to activity, or region, just pannin around and bam - total lock up for 30 seconds. . This does not happen with Cool Viewer. It happens only once in a 1/2 hour on the 1.20.17 build

Specific builds this is reproduced on : 1.21.6 , 1.21.5RC, 1.21.3SLim

This is 100% reproducible. The exact same problem occurs on the Macbook pro with the 512 video card. Again on that machine, the problem is lass apparent on the 1.20.x viewers.
