Wayfinder, if you have one of the Nvidia 177 series of drivers, then this issue is probably a duplicate of
There is a workaround posted in the comment by Chalice Yao - 19/Sep/08 03:01 AM Thank you Hi Ella. Thanks. Yes, I checked and I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers... 1.77.
However, I noted this comment on the other JIRA post: Elsa Little - 26/Jul/08 06:26 PM I only recently updated my Nvidia system, so this seems to indeed coincide with that issue. I was able to access SL through an older Nvidia 7900 card using an older driver and the problem disappeared. So it appears you're right on this one. Unfortunately the fix by Chalice has to be applied every time we log on... so I hope LL fixes this one quick. Additional info:
Apparently this isn't a bug in the Nvidia driver, but a problem on SL's side. Once I accessed SL through the 7900 card and the avatar appeared correctly, I logged off and accessed SL through the 9800 GTX again. Problem gone! Apparently something happened upon accessing through the 7900 card that fixed the bug... which therefore apparently exists in SL somewhere. Logically, if the problem existed with the 9800 driver... it would have persisted. The fact that logging in with the 7900 fixed the problem (at least on that piece of clothing) indicates that some kind of indicator somewhere on SL is being messed up (or some such wierd thing). Posting this identical finding in the other JIRA as well. I've been trying for months to get a call on whether this is a driver problem or a viewer problem. pjira should not be a one-way conduit of useful data for LL devs, some information should be flowing the other way too.
Yeah Maggie, I'd guess at this time it's not an Nvidia issue... because that issue can clean up as shown above. Has to be SL side. Was of course unpredictable on LL's part. But needs to be fixed nevertheless. Found out it's been reported for months now, so SL really needs to adapt to the world a little faster and get this one done. Folks are constantly told to download the latest graphics drivers... and older graphics drivers don't work with the 9800 GTX (a very popular card right now due ot its amazing power and terrific price drop).
This issue should not have been resolved as "Fixed".
It looks likely that you have an NVIDIA graphics card with version 177 or 178 drivers. There are known avatar rendering issues for these driver versions:
The following workaround has been reported:

Photo 2 shows an avatar without a jacket. The pants are fine.
Photo 3 shows the same avatar with the addition of a jacket worn with this outfit for months. The jacket addition causes the pants to turn white.
Photo 4. Tested this with several jackets. In every case, the jacket overrode the pants.
