 Description  « Hide
Without opening the Second Life client, my computer runs quite smoothly. As soon as I open the client, it begins to slow and CPU usage increases. Even if I close SL out right after opening it, the CPU gets bogged down at 100% until I restart the computer. If I connect to SL, I can walk around for about 30 seconds to a minute perfectly fine before the frame rate for the entire computer is so bad that I cannot navigate my cursor. SL itself freezes completely. I try to kill the process using task manager, but task manager never shows up and I can't close SL, so I'm forced to shut down the computer manually. I've had crashes before but none were ever this bad, and, none ever began before I even connected to Second Life and affected my computer even after it was completely closed down. The strange part is that it was perfectly fine 2 days ago, and I have not altered anything and to my knowledge there have been no updates to SL itself, so I'm stumped as to why it won't run at all now.

It could be an issue with your connection, router or your firewall/internet security programme.

Please check to make sure these are all functioning correctly.

Thank you

I installed the security release yesterday. Upon installing I now have this same issue as above. I open program and even in the login screen my cpu tops to 100%. I was perfectly fine in the last viewer version and previous ones. I uninstalled and reinstalled. Still the same. I installed the RC and it seems the same as well. If I minimize the viewer, my cpu goes down to a normal level. I have no other processes that are suspicious just SL viewer.

When the CPU maxes to 100% I am unable to move, rez or function in world. I have never even had much lag before so this is very disturbing to me as I have critical business that requires my presence on my two sims. I can't even get over to another area of the sim easily without teleporting and I time out when doing that. Chat is so lagged that it takes over a minute for one sentence to transfer into chat window.

I'm completely unable to move or perform any functions.

I have the current drivers installed. I perform regular maintenance. I've tried operating on one core, no help. I've turned up the priority of SL to no avail. Nothing has helped.

Venus, there could be a corrupted setting.

Please completely uninstall all Second Life programmes from your computer, saving any chat logs you want.

Then run a cleaning programme; I use CCleaner.

Please reboot your computer. If you have time you could also run the defragment programme on your hard drive.

Please dowload a new copy of Second Life Viewer 1.20.17 and/or RC 1.21.5.

If you still have an issue, please close Second Life and, before you restart, please attach your latest SecondLife log to this issue

Alright I did the following:

Uninstalled then cleaned.

Rebooted then defragged

Rebooted downloaded new SL,

EXACTLY the same problem. Nothing changed.

I'm having a similar problem. Running the SL client (1.20.17 or 1.21 RC5) my CPU usage is about 100%. Even if the option Run Multiple Threads is checked or unchecked. Sometimes (rarely) the CPU usage is good.

I spoke to Dell today after I ran every cleaning program, every virus program every registry program, every spyware/malware/adware program I have. Nothing.

Dell says this is specifically a software issue and all the tests run on my system came out great. Can anyone at all suggest anything else? I am paying hundreds of dollars of tier and can't get in!!!!!!!! I was perfectly fine up until this security update. I'm very frustrated.

Venus, thank you for your feedback.

Please would you post a Ticket with Support http://secondlife.com/support/ so that they can help you work through some account-specific suggestions. You may also be able to use Live Chat or phone support.

There could be an issue with your connection, please see this Knowledge Base article

Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Second Life Software Questions > How do I check for packet loss (network lag)? Topic #: 4051-4237
http://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=4237

It also includes links for checking that your firewalls and internet security programmes have allowed the correct permissions for Second Life to run.

Thank you : )

This is for sure a software issue because the moment I click on the viewer and it starts to come up, this happens BEFORE there is a connection to any servers. It does not happen with any other software except this one. I was fine, I was forced to DL the new security viewer, and the moment it came up after installation this was my fate.

I have no firewall problem. I'm a long time SL user.

I already had a support ticket that no one has answered yet. I appreciate you trying to help me. Basically I'm suck with having a perfect experience in SL for my two years to nothing at all. I have a store, I'm a builder I own two sims, I can't get on. I've lost money. I'm very frustrated.

Thank you for trying. It is not just me that is having this issue.

I'm having the same issue where my Windows XP CPU usage goes up to 100% once I log into Second Life. This is not an isolated issue by far as the comments above suggest other users are having the same issue. I don't know when this issue appeared but all I know is now SL for me is laggier than ever due to it consuming 100% of my single core computer (yes I know I need a new computer with atleast dual or quad core!). Vote on this issue and lets get this issue into the next patch because SL needs to return to the early days of lag-free!!

I use vista and i have been in sl for almost 3 years now and never had a problem before this.
Its clearly a software issue, if i minimize sl or click on another program my usage drops back down to normal.
I have reinstalled sl countless times and i even went as far as reinstalling vista thinking there was a problem on my end.
I dont have the greatest computer but i never used to lag much now i can hardly move....i hope something is done about this soon as there is clearly
a problem with the sl software.
