Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-20198

 Description  « Hide
Using the same default camera settings (.4 transition, 1.0 smoothing), the cam movements in 1.21 are poor to say the least. With camera constraints disabled, the zoom in & out & pan left & right is jerky and slow as compared to the 1.20 and earlier clients. The problem occurs at all times, regardless of the simulator or what object I'm focused on.

I am experiencing this as well. The change from version [1.20] to [1.21 (currently still in beta)] seems to have introduced an additional half second or so of lag time between mouse movement and camera response. (quite unacceptable) When this occurs, it also seems to reduce the magnitude of the camera movement/rotation, as though the client had "missed" the first half of the mouse action.

The Orbit camera control seems to be affected more than the pan and zoom controls, though this could be an illusion.

Edit: @OP: I would suggest changing the title of the issue to indicate that the issue was introduced in the change from 1.20 to 1.21

I really hope this gets fixed before the release since building fine detailed objects is nearly impossible now.

I am experiencing this too. I upgraded to version 1.21.0.95157 in the evening of Aug 28 2008 and noticed right away the camera movement is slow and jumpy when moving the camera. I also tried both with and without camera constrants and the issues continues.

I'm experiencing this too, but also jerkyness and lag when selecting a lot of multiple objects. When in edit mode, i select objects holding shift key. After selecting a few objects it starts to becom really laggy and it can take seconds before the next object is selected. When manually selecting a lot of objects it can take 2-3 seconds before each one is selected. It feels like the same kind of lag i'm experiencing with movement. In the days before the beta became rc mouselook suffered greatly from this too, but this seems to have been reduced in this version.

I have experienced as well. I was able to compensate for the cameras jerkyness by changing the CameraPositionSoothing from 1.000 to 2.000 which is under the Advanced menu in the Debug Settings. I have also experienced that when looking through Mouse Look or just walking around normally the screen is jerky.

Several of my friends refuse to use 1.21 purely because of this bug.
  • Camera rotation seems to be very slow. Speed decreases the closer the focused-on object is.
  • zooming in and out from an object causes the camera to jump.
  • holding alt and clicking on an object often tosses the camera wildly to another, without any motion of the mouse. In-door shopping is a major pain due to this.

JetZep Zabelin added a comment - 01/Sep/08 07:31 PM
This is the most noticeable issue with 1.21. This ever-present camera latency is unacceptable considering how smooth it is in 1.20. The camera should 100% client side, right?

I'll just betcha these are related.

Relates to VWR-8172, but possibly a dupe.

go into preferences under "camera" - and set camera smoothing to 0. does this change/fix the problem?

JetZep Zabelin added a comment - 05/Sep/08 04:32 PM - edited
Setting camera smoothing to 0 does not correct the camera jerkiness. The camera behaves as how it would on extreme lag. This occurs with ordinary camera movement (Alt-click). I am not editing an object and camera is very jerky/laggy.

We think that this issue is resolved, but can folks try 1.21 RC2 and report back?

With 1.21 RC2 its a little better while moving the cam with ALT-Click, but it is still horrible while using mouselook.

RC2 partially fixed that, but the effect described in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8886 is still persisting. Since that report is closed, I re-open this one.

Interesting bit of information: when the cam is in the state described in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8886, and I edit an object, the particle beam points right at the current camera position instead of at the object. The edit window however shows the object's properties.

Edit: rezzing also fails there, the particle beam from rezzing points right at the cam, and I get a "Failed to place object at specified location. Please try again."

Ok, this problem is resolved for me now with the most recent GeForce drivers (178.13) - Since i installed them, camera movement is very fluid in both mouselook and with alt-clicking.

Edit: Its back. I didnt change anything to my system and for some reason which I cant reproduce its back. Cam movement while alt-clicking is fluid, but in mouselook its horrible jerky.

JetZep Zabelin added a comment - 26/Sep/08 01:13 AM
This issue is mostly resolved on my system.
The camera still causes some reduced FPS when I quickly cam into my own avatar up close. But other than that, camera movement is ok.

markbyron falta added a comment - 07/Oct/08 08:23 PM
I believe the problem is fixed as well and I'm closing it - feel free to reopen it if you're still having problems, but update the issue for the current RC version.
