We all see it on a daily basis; the performance of the SL client is pretty poor. High-end machines with the most powerful graphics and more processing cores than you can shake a stick of RAM at are brought to their knees crying for their mothers when you fire up Second Life.
Even considering the dynamic nature of Second Life, and the way that this makes graphical superiority and performance a difficult issue; there are still a lot of areas in which SL's performance could be significantly improved to help with the user experience.
It is even the case that over the history of updates performance has steadily got worse, with performance improving features being few and far between.
This issue therefore proposes that LL dedicate more time to improving the performance of the Second Life viewer, thus enhancing the experience as a whole.
Please note; this proposal does not offer any specific solution. Since it is a meta-proposal it is intended instead to gather together possible performance improving features/fixes/changes, if you are aware of, or post, any then please do link them here.
If you wish for the Second Life viewer's performance to be improved, then please vote for this proposal. In addition you are recommended to read attached proposals and vote for any of them which you believe would be beneficial to Second Life.

This is simple. We need more performance!
Every update seems to reduce performance more and more, and as I've mentioned in VWR-490, the LOD algorithm no longer seems to be doing its job correctly. FPS are horrible, where before they were at least passable.
There should be an entire Linden team focusing on this.
Please link other specific performance related issues to this, but do vote for it so we can show that performance is supposed to come before new features! Tons of areas in SL have been left to decay because improving their performance isn't 'visible' enough, but it does nonetheless make a HUGE difference to the playing experience.

Description

This is simple. We need more performance!
Every update seems to reduce performance more and more, and as I've mentioned in VWR-490, the LOD algorithm no longer seems to be doing its job correctly. FPS are horrible, where before they were at least passable.
There should be an entire Linden team focusing on this.
Please link other specific performance related issues to this, but do vote for it so we can show that performance is supposed to come before new features! Tons of areas in SL have been left to decay because improving their performance isn't 'visible' enough, but it does nonetheless make a HUGE difference to the playing experience.
I mean, new skies, sculpted prims and so-on are nice and all, and may have 'wow' factor when you see what they're capable of. But they are worthless if people running powerful machines are still crawling along in this game! My machine isn't exactly old or performance impaired, and yet with 3 avatars on screen my FPS can plummet to 3fps or less, where before I could manage 10 or more on screen and LOD would keep things around 15fps or so, which is playable at least.
Big fancy new features are no good if the platform they are built onto is struggling with what it has already, please concentrate more Lindens on just taking the existing code and going over it with a fine-toothed comb looking for performance EVERYWHERE.
The Mac and Linux clients especially perform poorly as they take little advantage of facilities available to both platforms that would improve their speed.
