 Description  « Hide
Provide a feature to import a .3DM file directly into a sculpt map in Second Life. A 3DM file is a save format for the data that makes up the appearance of an object. Currently, people have to use several programs to convert their objects from their favorite 3D modeler program into a sculpt map.

Please give us the ability to import .OBJ, 3DM, or .3DS files. Sculpting with textures is entirely too time consuming and does not produce very good looking "organic" prims.
__________________________

Also including the ability to detach (unlink) certain objects associated with others (meaning in the same file as separate objects that should be able to move sepereately) in the object making it easier to upload sets of objects if necessary.

Polygon (and etc.) limits may also be a good idea as to prevent overloads and/or lag, or even crashing in the worst case scenario.

It will be necessary to make these objects have proper collision detection. No "invisible box" problems, like there are with sculpted objects. This is very annoying to deal with in Second Life as it limits capability, efficiency, and creativity.

-theGenius Indigo

(PS: UVW texture mapping capability would be nice too. [However this would work...not sure myself.])

Good idea. Even if the sculpting prims are a new and cool feature it seems that sculpting is not an all-purpose solution. It would be nice if it was possible to create a custom prim using an external 3d program and import it into SL in standard format without special tricks.

Awesome idea! I'm going to edit to delineate each file format into a separate issue.

I want to see this REALLY BADLY!

3DS and OBJ are going to be hard, but 3DM would be very practical and would be probably one of the biggest advancements of Second Life that I have ever seen. I would love to have the ability to upload my creations as 3DM files that were exported from Cinema 4D.

I give this feature two thumbs up! =D

I was wondering if there have been any advancements regarding this issue. We are currently trying to populate "Phil's Supermarket" with grocery products. Boxed items and some other simple shapes are fairly simple to achieve, but with so many different complex shapes to accommodate, we are desperately searching for more efficient ways to create geometry and get it into Second Life. The current plan is to get a "as close as possible" representation using a 3D scanner, then figure out how to get it "in world". If this is not the forum to ask about this, I apologize. I'm just very interested in advancements made in this area.

Given the number of formats that are being tied to this PR (i.e. .3DM doesn't help me... I really want .JT), I wonder if what needs to be done is for Linden Labs to support something like COLLADA - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COLLADA and then allow the developer community to create thier own DXF/JT/OBJ/Whatever converters to COLLADA

note: I haven't used COLLADA before and I'm making a big assumption that its more flexible that the above listed formats. If there is something better, that is fine too.

There has been some early groundwork by McNeel Assoc who distribute Rhino to support SL sculpties directly.

I have info about it at my own page on the topic in the link below.
