 Description  « Hide
Changing clothes results in the avatar turning completely black, including skin and all clothes but not attachments. Rebaking textures fixes this temporarily, but very quickly you turn black again (usually starting from the face). Clearing the cache and restarting does not affect this. Relogging doesn't fix it either.

I tried logging in from another machine (this one running Linux, so a completely different client). The black effect appeared momentarily, but rebaking textures fixed it - and the correct textures stuck.

I have the same problem. I'm on a Quad Core 3GHz Mac pro with SecondLife 1.17.0(12).

Liz Ferlinghetti added a comment - 24/Jun/07 08:04 AM
Been having this problem for the past few days and getting worse. Also other textures around me go black and getting almost impossible to work on projects.

Taken quite a few screen shots which you can see in my flickr account

Sometimes I am Black Sometimes everything is black but me somtimes also I cannot see any text in the program, even people in SL they say they see my face in black

Today I have turned completely black. I do not think this is my viewer as others see me as black, too. All non-prim clothes are black, my skin is black... I have tried to rebake. When I go "techni-color" for a little bit and then fade to black. When I edit my appearance all of the boxes are either black or technicolor.

Boudicca Klaar added a comment - 12/Jul/07 03:18 AM
I have the exact same problem and I am on a PC. Colleagues have the same PC, same RAM, same space on hard drive, but not problems. They see me all black as well. When I edit appearance, all the textures and preview images of outfits/skin etc. are all showing a crashed image - black and grey slashes and no proper images.

Same Issue. I'm on a Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz running WinXP (bootcamp) because the MacOS view crashes immediately when launched (that's another issue).

My man in black is only black when he is wearing clothes (most clothes). He's normal color when naked or wearing one particular shirt. Any other clothes items turns him black. It sounds like it's a video driver related problem.

[15:37] Dzonatas Sol: blackened avatars on macs... dupe
[15:37] Daedalus Young: yes, seen a dupe of it too

[15:37] Rob Linden: oh...yeah, it's linked to the dup, just not marked

[15:38] Daedalus Young: I'm on a Mac and it doesn't always happen
[15:38] Aric Linden: Same here Daedalus.

and What does that mean to us, that we have to enter in a place with less than 8 people??

Gryphon Hartunian added a comment - 27/Aug/07 11:46 PM
Hi. I'm having the same Problem on a MacBook Pro (Core 2 duo 2.4G, 2G ram, 256MB NVidia). It started when I first tried on some of the new body parts from my inventory that appeared in my Inventory after the last Client update. I didn't have the problem before I did that. I've met a few other folks who had a similar experience. My avatar now either turns into a "Ruth" or a blotchy disfigured guy but both are all black with no details. (I am pretty sure the Ruth thing is another problem (supposed to be a guy avatar - I'll research that further)

Gryphon Hartunian added a comment - 27/Aug/07 11:49 PM
Why is this issue listed as Resolved? I don't see any resolution. I have found no guidance on the knowlege base. Going somewhere where there are fewer than 8 other users is not a resolution. What's happening with this bug?

grizz mann added a comment - 07/Sep/07 12:42 PM
i too have now for 3 weeks dealt with 8 of my 15 AV's skins turned black. it has nothing to do with on my end. used 3 different computers one of which is a Mac. rebaking, reloading, repurchasing AV's did not work. some of my AV's are fine the others are junk now. I know its a free account but i paid real $$ for them.

Can someone tell me how to actually fix this problem?

Jengo Klaar added a comment - 30/Sep/07 01:56 AM
I had this issue in this alt that did not effect me in my main. I tried various reinstall, rebake, cache clearing tricks (which resulted in minimal 'vertical stripes' of my original skin showing through the blackness but didnt resolve), this issue happened to me with several skins I wore but not in one which was very odd.

It wasnt until I trashed my...

~/Library/Application\ Support/SecondLife/user_name

..directory AND cache cleared simultaneously that it actually got better. Not sure if it was my adjustments or it had run its course, hope this helps someone.

(client 1.18.2.1, Mac OS X.4.10, 2.33GHz Macbook Pro 2GB RadeonX1600 256MB VRAM). this was fixed before I moved to X.5 which I'm running now. sorry, no screenshots - Jengo

Jengo Klaar added a comment - 01/Oct/07 11:42 PM
issue continues in v 1.18.3.5 released today and has gone further to infect my main as well as my alt. All previous methods for squashing or minimising this bug are ineffective. Rolled back to previous version of the client (1.18.2.1) even when used in conjunction with cache clearing, relogging, rebaking & trashing preference files & Application Support directories several times it didnt help. Now effecting both my accounts and is most off-putting.

Jengo Klaar added a comment - 01/Oct/07 11:44 PM
This issue seems to be effecting clients again recently (see my recent comments) and although I'm on the Mac platform I've heard of it anecdotally on both Linux and Windows as well. Any resolution or workround would be greatly appreciated as it is effecting my inspiration to use SL.

Jengo Klaar added a comment - 02/Oct/07 04:07 AM
my mistake, shouldn't've reopened, duplicate of VWR-771

I am also having this exact same issue. Have been playing for close to a year on the same system.

Specs:
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS
Pentium Quad Core
4 GB memory
Windows XP

I installed windlight then uninstalled it, then peformed a reinstallation of the msot recent version of secondlife and the problem was not solved. I am also having the "black circles" around the sky appear infrequently as well.

I turned complety black with my main ava

I've tried an update of my video drivers (no result)
Cleared my cache (no result)
tryed a complete diffrent pc with an older version of sl (no result)
Tryed using the male test ava (no result)
Tryed a texture rebake (no result)

Everybody see me in total black

Tryed a diffrent ava on the same machine (this one is ok but is not an option to continue working in sl)

*****************UPDATE 05-27-08 *******************

After testing relogin more testing....
Seems that it now only affects on the two skins i used the most
thease skins are totaly useless now, if I wear another skin my body
seems normal again if i make a switch back to my primary skin I turns black again

This workarround is fine with me.... (it wass a cheap skin....)
But it aint supposed to happen!!!!!

I, too, am experiencing this problem, and would like very much to find a way of solving it, or would very much appreciate if someone else found a way, as well.

I'm having this now too, it started after I bought a black t-shirt.

I'm also having an issue with ground textures underwater appearing pitch black too, so maybe they are related issues.

Just started happening tonight.

Got this too now.

Have been using sl on my old macbook pro (2007) for a long time, no probs. Have been using sl on a late 2008 macbook pro for about a week, no probs, until last night. Avatar all black, like pics 2 and 4. Nothing fixed it apart from deleting the Lib/App support directory, took me ages of fiddling around. Changing clothes, rebaking, relogging etc do nothing.

Will add one thing, when editing appearance, all the little pictures are all black too (cant even see the avatar)

Anyway, its just done it again. All black. Everyhting else is fine.. well "fine" in a linden labs sense of course.

Fraccy Rebus added a comment - 09/Dec/08 10:06 AM
Ok I've just solved it for me. The solution? I'm using two monitors, I moved the sl window back onto the primary monitor and edited appearance.

Daoud Dezno added a comment - 28/Jan/09 12:59 PM - edited
Thanks for the above advice- that's exactly what fixed my "shadow man" issue. I re-edited my avatar's appearance on my primary monitor and it fixed it.

So...my advice is to stay away from changing your avatar's appearance on a secondary monitor!

Bill Friis added a comment - 22/May/09 01:12 PM
Same experience as Crusher.

Solution (well, work around) find an appearance in the Inventory Library that does not turn you black. Pull the skin and/or shape from that appearance into the folder for your appearance that is turning you black and remove the original skin or shape from that folder, and this may solve the problem. Although you need to rework a shape, or live with a different skin.

Details: Running two monitors on a MacPro with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT display card. Suddenly all black except for attachments. Switched to another machine with one monitor, still all black, to myself and to others. Rebake no help. Emptying cache and throwing out entire Second Life folder from Application Support did not help. After much experimentation changing appearance found two skins and one shape in my inventory caused problem. Moved those items to another folder, and pulled in new shapes and skins from elsewhere for those appearances. Everything fine.

To confirm that the two skins and the shape were the problem, tried them on with another outfit, expecting to turn black again. But, no. Not black at all. So, I suspect there is something involving defects in files for skins but have not been able to isolate a skin or shape that will consistently cause the problem.
