Hey McCabe, thoughts on Gellan's comment above?
My thoughts are either the default should be reverted, or a new better color/shade should be chosen that contrasts better with the background. Not sure what tutorials/kb articles out there specifically reference chat color, but I imagine there are at least a few.
Also, orange might be confusing to people. IMs from groups/avatars now blink orange in the communicate window, but objects are orange in group chat while IMs from groups and avatars in chat are white.
I had to change it back to white myslef. it was too hard to read. And blended into too much stuff.
While I quite like the orange, I disliked the blue self text. I worry that alot of people (the xcite clicking crowd) will get quite a shock and that instructions that mention to look for "Green text" might become broken.
Sure, it's user-configurable, but what reason is there to have the default color be ugly and unusable orange? It just makes SL look bad to new users, and makes everybody have to jump through an unneccessary hoop to get it back to an appropriate color. There's no sense in it.
Let's go back to the nice, perfectly usable green color that it has been for years. Changed priority to "Nice to have", as this impacts the experience at a very, very low level. In addition, it can be fixed in the preferences, so a feature request to change the default like this one should be at either "Low" or "Nice to have". (Since this is just text color I think "Nice to have" fits)
"Nice to have" is a linden priority. The correct priority for this is "Low."
Yeah, of course! Unimportant things like text color, that are just a fundamental part of the new-user experience, and can be easily changed by anyone who stays around long enough to find that part of the user preferences, should be given as low a priority as possible. Who cares about new-user retention?
I don't see what was wrong with the green it's always been. I don't like the new orange, and I also think it's too similar to the colour for llOwnerSay messages (which I actually thought it was at first). Surely the whole point of giving them their own colour in the first place was to differentiate them from normal object messages that everyone can see, so why now change them to be similar?
I think a change can be good but these colours just don't work all that well. Or at least the shades. Lighter and slightly redder orange might look good. And I like the blue but if it were lighter it would probably work better.
Agreed Ashelyn. I don't really mind the color changes as long as they look good. It's an odd contrast; all the other default colors are light, which in turn makes these new colors look darker and blend in with the background more. They also don't mesh well with the "silver" skin's chat history window. Your blue chat melds into the chat history background, while the orange object chat stands out too strongly.
I've been experimenting trying to find something better, but it's difficult to find one that works for the three different backgrounds (dark blue, black, and gray) and doesn't look like something else--which happens the lighter you go. However, I've found making them lighter and increasing their hue has improved their readability for me, particularly in the silver skin. This is exactly why VWR-8192 is needed. I think it would be best to revert to default since I have seen a lot of notecards, tutorials, etc that refer to "green text in chat".
Orange chat is just horrible
This thread is rediculous, have you ever considered some people might like the colour Orange? surely there are far more important issues to resolve than what colour object chat is default to? even as low priority i think this is time wasted where it could be spent more productively
i also find the orange flashing buttons ugly. about "this being unimportant" - someone may like the old colors, and even if you can change it back yourself, to get the exact old color back is less than trivial - it needs figuring out how its stored in the config files.
i am against this change because it's, like everything LL will ever do, a "change for a change". start fixing things. stop breaking things and stop making changes noone asked for. Fix pending: 1.21.3 (97379)

I'm worried that changing the default from green will cause a large number of KB articles / wiki pages / video tutorials / notecards to be out-of-date / need updating.
