Linden Lab Internal Branch: viewer/viewer_1.21

 Description  « Hide
Web tps aren't working for me in 1.21. Not sure if this is part of the way this viewer is set up or a bug, but thought I'd file it anyway:

Repro:

  • Observe: nothing happens.
= Expected: should get a prompt to tp inworld.

Works fine inworld, just not out.

Might be something wrong with slurl.com, not working for me from 1.20.15 either. Tested on 1.18.5.3 also, it is not working on that version either.

Bridie Linden - 06/Aug/08 11:46 AM
Slurls seem to be working now...if a little slow.
Try again?

McCabe Maxsted - 06/Aug/08 01:55 PM
Still not working in either FF3 or IE7, for the nightly or 1.20.

Joeseph Albanese - 07/Aug/08 09:55 PM
Seems with 1.21 installed it won't work on any version. I uninstalled everything, reinstalled 1.20.14 and 1.20.15 and it worked fine. Once I installed 1.21 it stopped again.

Dupe of VWR-5474

McCabe Maxsted - 27/Aug/08 04:42 PM - edited
Doesn't seem to be a dupe of VWR-5474, which is pretty old, and is about the removal of secondlife://app/teleport which was taken out due to security fears. The problem here is with the nightly installed slurls in browsers don't work (for any version). Slurls use a different method to teleport (for example, the slurl in the repro links to secondlife://Levenhall/20/225/21). Without 1.21 installed, these work normally. If anything, these two issues should be marked as related.

Spider Linden - 28/Aug/08 08:00 AM
Tested with release viewer
Second Life 1.20.15 (92456) Jul 18 2008 10:58:42 (Second Life Release)
and public nightly
Second Life 1.21.0 (95263) Aug 28 2008 01:39:54 (Second Life Public Nightly)
on Windows XP SP3

I was not able to reproduce the issue. Location based SLurls worked correctly. Tested multiple slurl.com urls, which triggered associated secondlife:// location URLs, including http://slurl.com/secondlife/Levenhall/20/225/21/?title=Linden%20Village

1. Launch SL viewer, and log in.
2. Open web browser to http://slurl.com/secondlife/Levenhall/20/225/21/?title=Linden%20Village
3. Click the 'Teleport now' button
-----------
You may be asked to select the application to launch. Select the correct active instance of SecondLife to launch.
-----------
4. In the SL Viewer you will get a 'Place Information' dialog, click the 'Teleport' button

RESULTS
Your avatar will be teleported to the location noted in the 'Place Information' dialog.

NOTE
While location based Slurls are working for me, I have found issues with group based SLurls. Group SLurl failure is already documented in VWR-5474, and the issue is being reviewed.

Spider Linden - 28/Aug/08 08:02 AM
I was unable to reproduce location based SLurl failures in the release or the nightly Windows builds of the Second Life viewer. If this is still failing, please reopen the issue, and provide some more information to help pin down the issue. Thanks.

Does the Beta Grid viewer, which is 1.21.0.94415, mirror the nightly enough to include it here? Because I have the beta and the normal release installed on my Vista machine and ever since I installed the Beta, slurls have stopped working.

Spider Linden - 28/Aug/08 08:50 AM
I am installing the Preview Grid Viewer 1.21.0.94415 (Second_Life_1-21-0-94415_Beta_Setup.exe), will open the http://slurl.com/secondlife/Levenhall/20/225/21/?title=Linden%20Village page in Firefox 3.0.1 and in IE 7.0.5730.13, and follow the same steps I have noted in my previous comment.

Alyx Sands - 28/Aug/08 09:01 AM
...ooookay, so I guess my config would be a good idea then (I use Firefox 2, latest version, because 3 won't run my fave extensions, could that be a problem?)

I do exactly the same, and...nada. I click the teleport now button and nothing happens.

I am now in a state where opening the http://slurl.com/secondlife/Levenhall/20/225/21/?title=Linden%20Village page in IE 7.0.5730.13 and clicking on the 'teleport now' button, does not trigger a response in the SL Viewer, neither the beta or release. Since I now have a reproducible case, I can see to it that this gets worked on. Thank you for continuing to pursue this issue!

Ramzi Linden - 28/Aug/08 03:14 PM
Let me change the summary, since this affects more than the Public Nightly builds.

Alyx Sands - 29/Aug/08 09:53 AM
Yep, I can confirm this-I deinstalled the beta grid viewer and installed RC0, and....nothing happens when I click on a slurl link.

Spider Linden - 29/Aug/08 10:30 AM
Alyx,

FYI, my comment that started with "I am installing the Preview Grid Viewer 1.21.0.94415.." was meant to imply that I was in the process of installing that version, because you said that was a version that was reproducing the issue for you.

Thanks so much for your insistence on showing that this was an issue, because it pushed me to dig into it, after it had failed to reproduce for me.

Here is some background information on why some people would have failing SLurls and others would not.

There is a Windows registry key that gets created, by the SL viewer installer, that IE and FF will look at, to tell them what application and application arguments they are supposed to run when they encounter secondlife: as the URL schema of a link. FF is not windows-centric, so while it looks at the registry key, it also keeps its own "registry" of associations. It is possible to get into a situation where FF has an association to an instance of the Second Life viewer executable, that is not the most recently installed. Because of that, in FF, SLurls may continue to appear to work, in situations where you have the release (working SLurl version) of the SL viewer, and other SL viewer installs (which installed on their own, would fail.).

Again, thanks for being on top of this.

Slurl.com is still not working for me in 1.21.0 (95368). Here's what happens when I click the slurl above, in both IE7 and FF3:
  • Click the slurl.
  • Browser asks me if I want to open the link with second life.
  • I click Yes.
  • Nothing appears inworld.

EDIT: I just tried clicking the slurl while logged out, and it opened SL and took me there fine. Now, slurl.com is working for me again, even while logged in. Anyone else see something similar, or was it just a hiccup on my machine?

Vlad Bjornson - 30/Aug/08 10:27 AM
After installing RC viewer 1.21.0 (95157) SLurls have stopped working for me as well. Clicking on an SLurl in either FF 3 or IE7 produces no effect. No lauching of the client, no requesters, nothing. Clicking on SLurls in the SL chat history does not work either. I experimented with the main viewer 1.20 and still could not use SLurls properly.

McCabe Maxsted,

Take a look at my comment to Alyx regarding the Windows registry. If you have multiple versions of the SL viewer installed in different directories, you may find scenarios where location SLurls work, and don't work. It will depend on which SL viewer .exe is getting triggered by secondlife: in the web browser's protocol handler. IE on Windows will use a key in the Windows Registry. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa767743(VS.85).aspx, in particular "Registering an Application to a URL Protocol" will be of interest to you. In FF on Windows, FF will also use that registry key, but it can also be configured for URL protocol associations, outside of the Windows registry (FF isn't windows-centric), which it keeps in your FF preferences (mimeTypes.rdf). In FF 3, you can do Tools->Options, Applications tab, and look up secondlife to see how FF is configured for the secondlife: "protocol".

thanks

I was just using slurl in 1.20.15 succesfully when I saw that the RC was out.
Installed RC 1.21.0(95157), and slurl did not work anymore.
Tried the 1.20.15 again, slurl did not work

Because it looked like a setting changed with the RC installation, I decided to test if this is the case by then re-installing 1.20.15(92456).

That helped, slurl worked after that in both 1.20.15(92456). and RC 1.21.0(95157).

I did not try and find out what setting caused it, because for the moment the workaround is ok for me.
It makes sense to think it is in the registry.
If I have time, I'll go over that and see if I can find it, and post that here.

I just installer viewer 1.21 RC1 and SLurls are working as expected again.
