 Description  « Hide
A very short period of time (a couple of minutes) after logging into SecondLife using the main client, version 1.16.0 (5), the client freezes, and the OS brings up a crash window. The client then has to be forced to exit in the OS. Upon restarting the client, the SecondLife crash reporter opens.

There does not appear to be any contributing factor to the crashes. It does not matter whether I manipulate my Avatar or just leave it standing, the client will still crash.

This may be a dupe or same or related to VWR-826

Does disabling Vertx Buffer Object (VBO) make a difference (graphics or adv.graphics options)?

What about cleaning the cache manually (ie. not from inside the Preferences > Network panel)? When I get the "sudden crash" issue all the time, in my case, it's most often a broken texture and/or asset on the cache that, when loaded, will crash the SL Client.

Manually deleting the cache means going into the /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/cache folder and manually drag all files inside into the Trash and emptying the Trash afterwards. In my case, I have fixed all issues of "sudden crash" on the Mac hardware that I use that is able to handle VBO (PowerBook G4 with ATI Radeon Mobile 9600; iMac Intel Dual Core with ATI Radeon X1600)

Since the update to 1.16.0 (6), I have no longer had any more issues with sudden crashing.

Thank you gwyneth---i had the same problem and did a manual delete of my cache and it fixed the problem.

I am having a similar problem, but clearing the cache does not work.

The problem is 100% repeatable. Here is what happens every time:

1) I start the Second Life application.
2) I sign in. My avatar is on Orientation Island.
3) I can move around for perhaps 5-10 seconds.
4) Then the animation freezes.

Once this crash has happened, I cannot switch to other applications. The whole system is frozen, other than being able to move the mouse cursor. The only remedy is to forcibly power down and reboot the system.

Sometimes the rainbow pinwheel cursor continues to spin after the system freezes, but I never get control back (it was still frozen even after I took a bath and came back).

This is the first time I've installed Second Life. I've never tried to run it before yesterday.

I've installed next to nothing on this new laptop, so I doubt that another application is somehow conflicting. I have a reliable high-speed Internet connection.

Things that I've already tried:
a) cleared the cache as described above (twice)
b) wiped out the whole Second Life directory in Library/Application Support, and reinstalled the Second Life application by dragging the application icon to the Applications folder, overwriting the old copy
c) I tried changing a few of the graphics preferences in the Second Life app before signing in; it made no difference,
d) I ran Apple's software update to get the newest version of the OS. This made no difference.

My system configuration:
MacBook (model 3,1) (purchased new in January 2008)
Mac OSX 10.5.2
Processor: 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 1 Gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Here's the graphics hardware info:

Intel GMA X3100:

A bit more information:

The first several times, I was using Second Life version 1.19.0.5. I later tried 1.19.1.4 and got the exact same results.

I wiped out the whole Second Life directory in Library/Application Support before running 1.19.1.4 for the first time.

Ulfila, I'm sorry to hear that SL is crashing for you

Could you please set your SL graphics setting to Low and then if you crash post your latest crash log, you can find it here Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Solution Finder > Technical Issue > Where do I find my Second Life diagnostic logs? https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417

and also the version of SL that you are using.

Thank you
