If you select a region URL from the dropdown list of previous region URLs on the Open Grid Beta Client splash page, the viewer ignores the value, and login fails.

This is a UI issue, not a python bug, as far as I can see.

Whump, I tested this today, and couldn't reproduce. Can you attach a viewer log file and write up a more descriptive re-create scenario?
