Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-18971

 Description  « Hide
I have rated this critical because LL is taking money from me for a service that is not being provided.

I have an ad for my shop NDC.

when i type ndc in 'all' - it comes up in the search (along with all the appropriate picks/links/references to it) but the ad doesn't appear in the paid ad spot..
when i type ndc in 'classifieds' ***it doesn't come up in the search results at all!!!!!! **** yet when i type in my other shop la vie gallery, it appears.. go figure.
places it works fine
when i type ndc is groups, the group shows but not the ad.

I did the same tests with La Vie and it worked fine, except that la vie no longer shows in places.. sigh

when i complained obout this to live help (or whatever it's called these days) a couple of months ago, i was told the reason was because I had a '~' in the ad. This is completely wrong as it is STILL not working even after removing anything that could possibly be misconstrued by your code.

This has been going on since MARCH 08.. To be told that you have no idea why it happens and that there are no refunds and that i should just cancel the ad sucks. I pay you guys for a service in this case to display an ad and somehow you can't even do this consistently.

this occurs in both 1.19 and 1.20.. since around March 08 to be precise

It sorts classifieds by price, on All search it will only display the top 10. "NDC" can be a part of a word in the other classifieds, for instance the top one uses the word "handcrafted" which contains "ndc". So the other classifieds are just displayed before yours. In the Classifieds search, yours is on the second page where L$78 classifieds would be sorted.

then it's not showing up correctly as if you are searching for a term, that word should be displayed. I know, call me picky but that's what search is for. therefore something as explicit as NDC should display NDC as number one. google and all other legitimate search engines can manage it.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 27/Jul/08 10:23 AM
I agree, if you notice on the All search, it only returns 8 results. It appears to be only Classifieds that are searched in this way.

naughty of you to downgrade it alexa wags finger Don't you care about LLs reputation???

You really should put a disclaimer on the classifieds tab saying that the search works differently and that people who search a term probably won't find what they're looking as you'll display those who have paid the most money and the ad has something sort of close to what they were searching for rather than returning the most appropiate term..

ok since all other search tabs on this system search differently it is unfair and either a bug or really bad design to make classifieds work differently. its also very disruptive both to the placers of ads and to the people trying to find them when all these "extra" results are placed in and you have to scroll pages to find what you searched for.

as Harleen pointed out at triage when you type in ndc in classifieds its not really expected or desired to get handcrafted unless you use a wildcard feature. As both a business owner and a shopper i think this needs to be changed so that classifieds work the same as any other tab...

Since VWR-8587 was closed in favor of this older entry, I'm moving over the original entry from that post along with the follow up commentary here as added weight to this entry, along with working to get all the voters from that one (37 to the 2 here when I followed the trail back to here left by the Linden who closed it) to come vote on this one.... I just don't think the entries or the votes should be lost ....

Second Life's Search Function is once again returning partial results. This is NOT the intended behavior of search and once again renders search a useless tool in locating precisely what you are after.

=================================================================================
From the SL Knowledgebase

18. Has searching been fixed so that it no longer searches for partial words?

Yes. The old search used to return results like "constable" if you entered "table." That no longer happens.
===================================================================================

A search for "toes" pulls up myriad results. A search for "table" likewise returns myriad results as a result of this unwanted behavior.

Table will return results for tintable over and over again. Careful examination of the listing reveals that "table" in and of itself is not included in the listing at all.

Results for the word "stool" reveals many results in which keywords are run together without spaces or commas. In this manner any word ending with the letter "S" placed before the word "tools" brings up improper results.

Here are examples using "pear" which will bring up spear or pearl or disappear or appearance -

bridges, waves, sculpted waves, coconut beach bar, hammock, hammocks, lover's pearl

features a radio tuner, rezzable objects, new appearance options and preset styles

cash girls strippers sparta spartan roman rome helmet attire outfit spear

Limited testing on the word 'pear' shows Places tab to work as intended (or omitting results that I would have no idea should be there), All to appear to work correctly except for false results in the Classifieds column (example 'Native Spirits' showing in the classifieds column on the right when it mentions 'spear' twice but not 'pear' at all), and Classifieds tab to have all sorts of garbage results if you just want 'pear' or 'pears' to show up (you get spear, pearls, etc showing as well).

Definitely voting for this to be fixed, just helping define where the 'break' is more closely....

Char

Dirk Talamasca - 11/Aug/08 08:53 AM
Char is correct. This still brings up results that should not appear on the ALL tab since classifieds are also listed there to the right and is unfair to classified customers that genuinely paid for a hit on that keyword.

Classifieds being wrong was already reported in VWR-8371, I cannot reproduce this except for Classifieds.

I've run into similar problems as Charlene describes – this can be very fustrating. Have seen it when trying to search partial words, Seems to me this is part of a larger problem with the search function. I would recommend adding the use of wildcard characters to resolve this.

confirmed. the new search is a farce. No matter if i explicitly search for the ads title or definitely unique strings in my ad (such as "yhöosimjdybs") it won't appear. If that is what i am paying for i better save my money for adboards. I have never found anything even with the most simple keywords ever. also the search results vary day by day in an unrelaisitc way. 4 days ago i was looking for "party" and got 6 results - for 2 days. tried it again toady and got xxx results. I can't believe hundreds of ppl added this keyword right away?

alexia cournoyer added a comment - 27/Feb/09 09:09 PM
well, it's still there.. I search in all and get one page of results and no classified..

This did make it to a triage meeting but never went any further.

Can someone explain to me what is right/fair/good business practice about taking money for a service that isn't delivered?? I'm damned if I can explain it
