First, this problem is not in the production version, nor was it in RCs until 2 or 3 versions ago.

Problem is simple ... I can edit and move around my objects just fine.

When I try to hghlight my partner's objects (we messed around endlessly with modify privileges and it is not in the settings) I cannot get them into edit mode. Not even enough to see that they are hers.

When I go into a store and like something but want to know how many prims it has, same problem, right click, choose edit - get a completely empty edit box and the item not highlighted.

i.e. ONLY my objects can I so much as get any info about, never mind edit.

On the current RC, I don't even HAVE a Tools menu to ensure Select My Objects is not checked, but when I check this in the production version that flag is not set, i.e. I do not have Select My Objects active.

It's clearly not a network issue because it has been going on for so long.

Aargh

Selecting any object and going into Edit mode will un-hide the Tools menu where you can then un-check Select Only My Objects. You can also toggle it under the Advanced->Debug Settings, find the SelectOwnedOnly setting and change it to FALSE.

Why, thank you very much. Um why is the Tools menu autohidden? I now know that I have to put my hair into edit mode to get at the tools menu to turn off Select Only My Objects if it is on to find how many prims are in a lamp.

I did have that checked under Tools, forgot to uncheck it, couldn't find it for the life of me.

It is present under debug settings too, but I would have expected such a thing to be a bit higher level.

Thanks again. I am leaving this unresolved so someone will look at it and ponder the auto-hiding of the Tools menu. I think it's a poor idea. If others don't agree, please bring this important (and if you are building, not infrequently used) item up a level in Advanced so you don't have to drill down into debug options (the very word debug scares many away) to find SelectOwnerOwner.

Auto-hiding is a nasty practice. I don't know how many tens of hours I have wasted trying to get autohide to work properly with the taskbar. I have tried everything, on several occasions. It seems to work, kinda, when it feels like it - and often resets so objects I have specified to show always are randomly set to hide when unneeded.

Think three times before making something go away from a user interface without a user intervention. Anything else just breeds frustration ... and support tickets and JIRA items. Lindens, please make auto-hide of Tools menu a toggle under Edit/Preferences with the default to OFF.

There is already a feature request for this, see VWR-6328

So there is, thank you Harleen. I voted for it, although it is marked as being worked on, and I am marking this issue VWR-8248 resolved.

Thanks again for your help getting this fixed. It has been a major source of frustration over the past little while

Well, it is not really fixed, but the Lindens are working on it - see VWR-6328 ... and vote for it if you are having the same issues with Tools menu autohide so they don't lose interest
