 Description  « Hide
Attached screenshots show that terrain below the water line is rendered pitch black.

This started happening when I installed the latest graphics driver from nvidia.

Both RC13 and RC14 show this behavior.

Revert back to nVidia Driver 174.74 as a workaround, it's very stable and SL doesn't memleak. I'm not going to upgrade my drivers if I don't need a newer feature when they are stable.

Lulu Pink added a comment - 28/Jul/08 06:53 PM
I tried... reverted to 174.74 ... no change.
Then i reverted to 169.44... and it is ok again...
I dont really know how stable or better or worse the older driver is but in general:
Why would be a new driver for any hardware released if it were NOT better?
First thing everybody asks when you have any issues with sl is:
Do you have the latest driver installed?

So now i need to work around by using a out-dated driver

nekololi woodget added a comment - 29/Jul/08 12:33 AM
DANG!... I held off on updating my video drivers for the better part of a year. and just when I do this issue appears? pppptttttpppp

well at least it's been imported. Here's my vote, I'll stick with the current video drivers and come set to watch this issue. Will report back if things start working again.

Kel Hartunian added a comment - 30/Jul/08 10:38 PM
Verifying this issue here on Linux.

Upgraded to Nvidia driver 173.14. Terrain underwater is black.

Masha Eilde added a comment - 11/Aug/08 12:12 AM
This is issue occurs to for me with the latest official client (three snapshots attached).

The first shows the tarry puddle.
The second is with "SurfacePatch" disabled - water looks fine.
The second is with "SurfacePatch" enabled but "Atmospheric Rendering" disabled -water looks fine.

The trouble is, no surface patch means the world looks bizarre. No atmospheric rendering means I lose all of Windlight. Neither make me a happy woman.

Latest main release client (I've updated ticket)
Windows XP Pro, latest SP, patches
Pentium 4, 2.66 GHz
2.00 GB RAM
GeForce 7800 GS, driver 6.14.11.7519

Same problem for my gf, we wrongly posted on issue #6674 as well before and lots of others too, maybe it's possible to move the wrong entry's into this #8211 issue?

My gf can trigger the "black-land-below-water-line" by enabling local lights, on = black, off = normal.
As a workaround she disabed fog (ctrl-alt-F6) so that the water is not blue anymore but it still looks more or less "ok" and she will see the local lights again.

She uses Nvidia 7600GT (AGP) with 256mb DDR3.

Terrain is black underwater. I have atmospheric shaders and surface patch on.

Removing Fog reveals the terrain's textures again, but the expected underwater lighting is gone. As in it looks as it does above water.

Terrain went black underwater when i finally decided to update the graphic card's drivers. I used the latest WHQL drivers : 175.19

I fixed the problem by uninstalling the before said drivers and reverting to older ones which can be found in nvidia archives. i'm currently using this "169.44_forceware_winxp_32bit_english_beta.exe".

I don't want to revert to older drivers. Everything (except underwater terrain) looks SO much better with the new drivers. Also it seems easier to pan the camera around.

Lulu Pink added a comment - 08/Sep/08 05:02 PM
This seems from what i read here mostly occur with GeForce 7xxx cards...
And yes, the 169.44 is the latest driver which "fixes" it.

I try every new driver nVidia releases (and beta) but looks just like everything doesnt work, the last new beta driver even seemed to make things in general worse where the last released one IS better but the black underwater surface

Tensai Hilra added a comment - 09/Sep/08 02:59 PM
Here's one thing: in advanced disable render feature FOG and it goes clean without the murky windlight effects. a workaround for screenshots, but has to be done every time and looses the desired effect.

still affects the latest RC

Pumpkin Zenovka added a comment - 17/Sep/08 04:59 AM
Yep....updated Nividia...and now my beautiful underwater garden is spoilt! Its like a giant oil slick!

I thought LL recommended using the latest drivers to enjoy SL at its best??

I am reluctant to keep changing drivers back and forth, so I have worked around it by turning off "atmospheric rendering". Not the greatest solution.

What is the point of LL providing all the whistles and bells if you can't use them?

nekololi woodget added a comment - 18/Sep/08 01:12 PM
Don't disable atmospheric rendering.
Instead either turn off fog with (ctrl-alt-F6)
Or turn off local lights in the Graphics tab of Preferences.

The former will make the water clear, the latter will keep the water looking about what it should.
And you get to keep the pretty WindLight sky+water effects

I rolled back my video driver to workaround VWR-7957 and now I am experiencing this bug instead. I'm very, very tired of trying different drivers and if I roll back too far another program I run BSODs me so violently that my system could be damaged.

Kim makes a good point. Rollbacks aren't a solution, we can't be using inferior drivers forever. This needs a fix, as does Kim's initial problem. I'm now experiencing this. I upgraded my video driver to fix some graphics errors I was getting in other games, and I don't intend to roll back.

Mistress Beresford added a comment - 29/Oct/08 04:48 PM
This is happening to me too. I am using a beta release driver, version: 7.15.0011.7528 (English), also listed as 175.28 in the download. I will stick with turning off fog for the moment as this is the first driver where the SLI is working properly on the cards.

Corrected the Environment Information to reflect Windows and Linux infos separately.

Setting priority to "Major", because not seeing anything under water or having no fog or having no atmospheric shaders (windlight) is "Major loss or impairment of function" in my eyes.

Jup, I'm getting bored with this one.

Okay LL... this is getting reallly old. every new release, every new video driver it's still like this. Running an OLD video driver is NOT the solution. for me, that makes it so I cant use my monitor correctly, so lets step up and fix this. Waiting for it to 'go away' on it's own doesn't seem to be cutting it.

The facts to now:
It's likely related to Fog and Lights. Why? Turn off fog with (ctrl-alt-F6) Or turn off local lights in the Graphics tab of Preferences and the blackness clears up, BUT it's not nearly as nice a picture and turning off lights isn't an option for me. Turning off fog makes all the hard work the Windlight team put into natural water wasted.

Driver version 169.44 is the last one that worked. Everything else, and oh yea, they are up to 180+ now... fails.
Plan of action: Contact Nvidia and ask what changed between 169.44 and the very next one. that right there coupled with your previous knowledge of the fog rendering in windlight should pretty much peg it.

PLEASE work on this, I've noticed a bunch of duplicates that state Radeon cards are now being affected. This may indicate an OpenGL issue.

I can verify that this bug is affecting the nVidia GeForce 7000 series in particular. My girlfriend was having this issue with her GeForce 7950 GX2 and upon upgrading yesterday to a GeForce 9800 GT the problem was solved. I imagine the number of us with 7000 series cards are dwindling but it would still be really nice if this issue were fixed. Some of us are on laptops and don't have the option to get a new card without a whole computer upgrade. This bug really hinders the overall beauty of the game and lessens the enjoyment of underwater builds tremendously.

The work-arounds available (disabling fog / disabling atmospheric shaders / disabling lights / downgrading to old drivers) are not acceptable in my opinion.

I am still having the issue and here are my specs:
(I just now updated to the most recent GeForce drivers available - 180.70)

Just adding my whining to the pile. Sorry, but I already rolled back my drivers to 175.19 to fix the texturing problem in VWR-7957 and have gotten fixed all the other things that broke because of that rollback. I'm not going backwards again. I see this problem was first reported in JULY. Hmm.

Update: Internally, we do have a possible fix for this issue, but it is still in its development cycle where it is being thoroughly tested as to whether the fix is robust and integrates with the rest of the rendering system.

Viewer 1.22 contains a set of fixes that were already tested through October 2008; so this fix will not appear in the upcoming Viewer 1.22. If a normal schedule and successful testing prevails, then this fix is likely to appear in the next viewer (tentatively: 1.23).

Adrianna Fredriksson added a comment - 31/Jan/09 04:28 PM
I have lost interest in SL since the black water issue appeared more than half a year ago... come on Linden, get it fixed fast! I'm using the latest Nvidia driver for GeForce 7900 and black water is very ugly!

It's February and the problem is STILL there.. my god. I do not want to revert to old driver, I do not want to turn light option off because it gets dark and unrealistic, I do not want to turn atmosphere off.. I don't want to do anything. I want like before where I can enjoy the beauty of Second Life and its details in ultra setting.

Please Linden, GET THIS FIXED ASAP! Come on!

I've noticed that when you set lighting to "Sun and Moon" only, the terrain comes back to normal, while with "local lighting only" on, the terrain goes ALL black.

Also, as an experiment, I made an object, and had it shed light. It seems that light sources under water just don't exist unless it's the sun or the moon. My theory is that the client for some reason cannot render object lighting in water at all on any land underwater. Objects on the other hand appear fine. Note this is with fog effects on.

i've had the 'black ground below waterlevel' since i upgraded the drivers of my graphics card... running the RC viewer on recommended settings.. but have to 'untick' atmospheric shaders to be able to see land under water.. i have also noticed that in certain light settings (which vary from region to region) the dark basic hair of my skin throws dark shadows across the shoulders and neck area.. skins without hair don't cause this (to clarify.. this is the painted hair on the head.. normally mainly found on male skins)

this is still not fixed??! i commented on this back in november.. i know it says fix pending but could you please move this out to the rest of us? nvidia just released new drivers a few days ago.. i have not updated my drivers in MONTHS because of the problems sl has had with the drivers and now after updating them just to see if maybe the rc was fixed, i am greeted with the same ugly pitch black water...

hurry up all ready!

Folks, I know this is a stupid bug and has been ignored way too long. But at the moment we have an ETA from LL. Ramzi wrote: "If a normal schedule and successful testing prevails, then this fix is likely to appear in the next viewer (tentatively: 1.23)."

So it's really no use to urge LL, because they made up their plan when to fix that and you won't be able to make them change the plan.

1.22 should be released as stable very soon (in the end we are at the 10th revision of the 1.22 RC, so it CAN'T be that long anymore) and after 1.22 has been released, we soon can see the first iteration of 1.23 as RC0. Let's see what it's worth and then we still can complain further

I've just encountered this problem too. I was running some rather old drivers on my 7800GTX, but then I swapped to a 9800GT to test it before I installed it in a PC for someone, and installed the latest NVIDIA drivers for it (182.08, the ones I had before didn't even support that model of card). That was all fine in SL, but I've just changed back to my 7800GTX and found that Windows is now using the new drivers for it too, and the first thing I did was log into SL to make sure it was all OK with the new drivers... everything looked fine until I went outside and saw the colour of the water looked odd, and then looked under it.

So it seems it's only newer NVIDIA drivers on older (7 series?) cards... but I don't really wanna change back to the old drivers because I seem to be getting a much better framerate, and everything else looks fine

Still all black under water.

I'm not seeing the problem myself. I'm running XP with a NVidia GeForce 8600 graphics card with the latest drivers and the current client viewer. Several people around me are reporting black underwater, though, so the issue is still with us. As far as I can tell, the people who have commented to me are using NVidia 7000 series cards, for what that's worth.

Had some time for experimenting,
It was not possible for me to install the latest NVIDIA drivers (182.50), after about an hour my sweet Windows (in it's wisdom) pulled the 178.13 drivers, Have no Idea where it pulled it from though since I didn't have it on my system.
Results with 178.13:
Second Life 1.22.11 (113941) Mar 6 2009 12:50:02 (Second Life Release)
=> tarpit
Second Life 1.22.11 (113976) Mar 6 2009 16:05:03 (Second Life Release Candidate)
=>tarpit
Second Life 1.21.0 (94415) Aug 14 2008 15:18:57 (Second Life Beta)
=>tarpit (odd version numbering)

Reinstalling the backup drivers wasn't easy but I managed to drop 169.21 back on my system.
Results with 169.21 drivers (the very, very old one):
Second Life 1.22.11 (113941) Mar 6 2009 12:50:02 (Second Life Release)
=> Water!

Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS
I did notice that with the newer drives the system (not only sl) was faster as normal. But having my castle in a tarpit is no option for me.

I like this as a workaround:

Preferences - Graphics - turn Atmospheric shaders off.
Bump-mapping, Basic shaders and Water reflections can still be on.

I much prefer that effect to turning fog off.

It appears this may be fixed in 1.23 Public Nightly after all by simply changing your graphics to low and then returning them to your previous setting. For me at least this seems to have fixed it.

Updated drivers on both Linux (mine) and Windows (my wife's) machines. This fixed the issue on Windows, but the user had to fiddle with the graphics settings per Harleen Gretzky's suggestion. Bring the graphics settings down to Low, then manually adjust settings upward to your desired level.

Still no dice on Linux with the 185.18 drivers. Maybe 185.85 is the magic number here?

More info:

As a test, I ran the 1.23 RC windows client through Wine on Linux and this bug was gone.

Presumably, this means that the problem is now relegated to the Linux client specifically, whether completely internal to the client or in how it talks to OpenGL.

I thought that might be helpful to some developers.

Dessie Linden,

This issue may be fixed on a majority of setups, but as of right now, it seems to still exist on Linux client with Nvidia GeForce 7000 series cards. As proof, I've attached a screenshot from this morning showing the "About Second Life" and "Preferences" UI elements, as well as a sadly blacked out portion of the Blake Sea. You can see in the image that I'm running the 1.23.4 RC on Linux, and the ground below the water's surface is blacked out.

I've brought the graphics settings low and back up. Even logged out with them down and brought them back up after login. Never fails: If local lights and atmospheric shaders are both on, the bug remains.

Details:
OS: Ubuntu 9.04
Nvidia drivers version: 1.85.14
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS w/ 512MB vram

I'm sure the percentage of residents now impacted by this bug is vanishingly small, but just as you wouldn't mark it resolved if it were fixed only in the Linux and Mac clients but remained for Windows, I don't think it's time to mark this solved just yet.

Dessie Linden added a comment - 15/Jun/09 04:52 PM
Fixed in 1.23.4, released on 06/15/2009.

While I'm out (I bought a GTX 260 two weeks ago) I still find it rude to set this to fixed without any further comment despite the report of Kel Hartunian incl the screenshot that proofs the opposite.
Maybe after fixing this for most Geforce 7xxx users it might be reasonable (business wise) to not put any more effort into that, but then you should be so honest to explain that and set it to "won't fix".

Just my 2 cent.

Edit:
Hummmm if RC4 has been released on June 15th, what was Kel using on June 12th? A nightly build from SVN? Perhaps then the fix has been implemented between 12th and 15th? If that's the case I apologize, but still I stand to my opinion, that even this could have been stated in a more lenghty comment by Dessie, like, say, 3 lines instead of one...

Kel Hartunian added a comment - 16/Jun/09 08:04 AM
Hiya Daniel,

The 1.23.4 Release Candidate (build 123523) was released on the 9th or 10th of June. The new 1.23.4 stable (build 123908) was released on the 15th. I wasn't using a nightly or anything like that. Just the RC as compiled and supplied by Linden Labs.

I just checked: the problem is still there for me in the 1.23.4 final. Ultimately, it's not that big of an annoyance, I suppose, and my wife and I will be upgrading our computers soon anyway.

The definition of "fixed" for a bug can be whatever a development team wants.. whether that be 'fully eradicated' or 'gone for 99.5+% of users.' It's not so fun to be in the 0.5% is all.

Before reopening this issue for 1.23 please make sure you go to Edit>Preferences>Graphics tab and change the setting to Low and apply it, then set it back to your normal setting and apply. If you are still seeing this issue after that, please go to a region without an adjacent region and take a snapshot of the terrain underground near the void region, this is the clearest way to see this issue as the void region will not be black. This will insure you are seeing this issue and not another issue.

Kel Hartunian added a comment - 16/Jun/09 06:17 PM - edited
Followed your instructions to the T, Harleen.. including setting graphics low and then back up (which fixed things on my wife's Windows machine with identical hardware when the 1.23.4 RC first came out.)

Still no dice. I've attached a screen shot with Edit>Preferences>Graphics and About Second Life visible for confirmation.

I leave it to you to decide if this issue should be open or resolved. I'm tired of my bug reporting on this issue being smacked down, and am rapidly losing impetus to assist in the client's development because of it.

I recently came across this on Linux, after I edited gpu_table.txt and changed my GeForce 7300 card from class 1 to class 2, trying to work around VWR-13110. So my guess is it's possible to work around this by reducing the card's class in gpu_table.txt to class 1 (even if it was originally class 2)

Kel Hartunian added a comment - 09/Jul/09 11:27 AM
Success!

Thickbrick's solution works! Changing my card to class 1 in gpu_table.txt resolved the issue. Usually I have to disable fog in the Advanced menu every time I log in. With this fix, it was rendering properly from the moment of login. Amazing!

I can now put all graphics features as high or low as I want. With both lighting and atmospheric shaders on, the terrain underwater now looks correct!

Thanks for that info, Thickbrick! I'm sure that this'll help someone track down the actual cause of this bug too.

Johnnie Carling added a comment - 09/Jul/09 01:21 PM

disabling fog did remove the problem for me, but of course i don't really want to have to do that every time i log in. please look into this LL! you guys forced me to keep myself on way outdated drivers for too long!

Setting the "RenderQualityPerformance" option in the Debug Settings (in the advanced menu) to 2 for 7000 series GForce cards or earlier ones seems to fix the issue. While keeping the atmospheric shaders and proper lighting intact.

This also seems to appear on the 7xxx series GForce cards, probably earlier ones too, maybe. I can extrapolate this assumption by checking things on a 7800 GForce, and comparing it to a 9000 series GForce card. It's not drivers either from what I've seen. I think this is a hardware issue, not an issue regarding the viewer/sim.

Doubt that would be of much help to those that gave up on this...

Just wanted to comment that this problem has disappeard for me, after a Laptop upgrade. Given that I now have a 1GB Nvidia card I should hope so! And, why are people reporting Emerald issues here? Go to http://modularsystems.sl/ and stop cluttering up JIRA with irrelevant entries.

I have the same problem but found that changing the graphics settings from nearby local lights to Sun and Moon only solves the problem, or reveals where the problem is coming from.

have you tested the gpu_table.txt workaround? Change the class from your card to 1(/2). When I change the class from 'NVIDIA GeForce 7900' to 1 it is fixed for my 7950GT ...

PS: Work also for Emerald
