 Description  « Hide
This is an issue I filed once before under the old system and I am now bringing it over to the JIRA.

Some Content Creators make free items that they wish to share with all of Second Life, with as few restrictions as possible (some prefer to prevent modification or copying, others do not). However under the current system if an item is marked as being transferable it can then be resold by another user at a profit.

This is unfair to bother the normal users and to the Content Creators who wished only to be able to freely share their item with everyone.

What I propose is for the current Transfer/Resell option to be separated out into two new options: Transfer Only (no resell) and Resell (the same as the old single option). This will allow those who actually did want others to be able to make a little money from resales to still do so AND will allow those who simply wished their items to be able to remain free and able to be given away to everyone to do so as well.

Duplicates several issues SVC-2624/MISC-1195/MISC-400/SVC-995/SVC-366, some of which have been resolved as not possible.

None of which showed up in a search. All of which concern (apparently) objects being sold in vendors. This issue has nothing to do with the sale of items through the various vendor systems and everything to do with direct (click the item in question and hit buy) sales as well as inventory to inventory transfers.

This would be possible if the server code were altered to allow for it - something which apparently has been forgotten.

Kindly ask to make certain you are closing a real duplicate next time please.

Looking at ONE of the listed issues, it seems this one is more or less related to it. I'm not asking for the Lindens to come up with a way for this to work in vendors, I am not asking for a way to track and punish those who resell an item that was supposed to be free. I am asking for a way to allow transfer of items WITHOUT someone coming along and trying to sell said item for a profit: Hitting No Transfer or keeping the object rezzed out somewhere is not much of an option.

I did and will not re-resolve this since it is your right to reopen but I disagree, none of the issues pertain to objects being sold in vendors, some mention it. For instance, the first one SVC-2624's description says nothing of vendor sales.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 07/Jul/08 03:37 PM
And usually vendors are mentioned as a way to get around this type of flag. Just as there is no way to stop someone from "gifting" you an object and then you "gifting" them money in return (though this takes a certain amount of trust).

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 07/Jul/08 03:45 PM
Actually none of the descriptions of any of the mentioned issues says anything about vendors and everyone is about separating transfer from resell.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 07/Jul/08 04:03 PM - edited
And usually this is deemed not possible not because the server alterations have been forgotten, they have not. But because they can easily be avoided by using vendors or "boxing" them in another prim.

How is this description different than the others Harleen has listed?

Solar Legion added a comment - 08/Jul/08 06:38 PM
McCabe, I'm not looking at just the description - I'm paying attention to the comments as well.

Incidentally: In at least one of them a scripting function (from what I could gather) was being asked for instead of an actual permissions option.

as for the others? from what i could gather comment wise the other issues were filed with the intent that the added permissions be flawless and unable to be gotten around. I know very well that there are work arounds ... and that it'd be impossible to prevent them at present.

Frankly, I really don't care what the workarounds are: someone is always going to find a way around the system to do what they please.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 08/Jul/08 09:09 PM
What do the comments from other posters have to do with the original descriptions intent?

Since I mentioned vendors on this JIRA does it now have to do with vendors?

Neither SVC-995 or MISC-1195, says anything about vendors or flawless permissions in their descriptions.

Solar Legion added a comment - 09/Jul/08 03:28 AM
Everything Harleen as more and more of the real intent of the person that filed an issue can come out in the comments and never be truly added into the description.

Quit harping on the same thing over and over again please .... or would you rather I just cave in and close this issue hmm?

Only if it is a comment by the OP, the OP has no control over what others comment.

I do not want you to cave, just trying to understand your logic.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 09/Jul/08 06:30 AM
Nobody is hounding you, or trying to bully you into closing your issue unfairly, but if you're intending for a unique implementation other than what's already been submitted, you should edit your description to reflect that. Otherwise, the description on this issue is a pretty clear restatement of descriptions in other issues. (Descriptions are better to rely on. Sorting through all of an issue's comments to understand its intent just isn't practical, and like Harleen hinted at, a lot of issue's comments tend to go off topic). Addressing the concerns raised in other issues' comments would give you brownie points.

For "buy" it should be really easy to enforce a no-resale flag. For any other way around it, here is a solution that might work: llGiveInventory and llGiveInventoryList can simply not send anything flagged as no-resale that does not have the same creator as the prim that the script is in.
