LL's had a license to use SpeedTree in the client for ages, but we're still stuck with the craptastic Linden trees. Can we get a team on implementing this, plus an interface for designing tree skeletons in game? Many users have attempted to make their own trees (Botanical is a great example) however people with small parcels or harsh prim limits in their sims are still limited by what they can put down. So for those who can only afford a few 1 prim trees, and those who want a really nice forest, please make use of this license already. x.x

Having been a part of SL for just over a year, I would deff. welcome and support higher quality trees with a lower prim count.

This should be a no-brainer for LL, especially if they have already purchased the SpeedTree license. Many sims, including my own, Serenity Woods, rely on trees heavily for their beauty. Linden trees were nice in 2004, but hardware has moved on and SL's approach to trees should move along with it. My sim currently uses very few Linden Trees, opting instead for more-primmy and more-scripty sculpt/particle based trees. It would be a lot nicer if the client simply supported the robust and beautiful kinds of trees that SpeedTree can offer.

If Oblivion, UT3 and GTA IV (to name a select few) can do it, so can SL. SpeedTree is very configurable and can scale to accomodate a wide range of hardware configurations. SpeedTree has a long history of use in mainstream titles.

We can do better than two perpendicular alpha-textured polygons. Let's beautify SL with SpeedTree!

And also, since LL was willing to implement Windlight for better looking skies and water (which personally have been faster than the previous sky), it just makes sense to upgrade the trees as well. Particularly since SpeedTree's LoD system seems to be a lot less harsh on my hardware in the demos than SL's system which dumps entire groves of trees from the higher poly (though still kind of bad looking) trees to two planes with a 32x32 texture on it. >P
That jump kills my processor in some areas, and sometimes boots me off of SL, so I'm forced to keep tree detail at minimum.

SpeedTree is on the Rendering Roadmap, though it hasn't (publicly) been assigned a priority.

Having reviewed the public records here is what I have gathered:
SpeedTree is delayed at least until Q3 or Q4 of 2008. The graphics team is spending their time working on stability and performance.

Pastrami Linden: Feynt, no work has been done on SpeedTree yet
Pastrami Linden: and we may be working on some stability before that

Pastrami Linden: [13:42] Zante Zapedzki: we realise that SpeedTree is the next thing to do on the feature list but has any work been done on it so far? - Is it going to be difficult to make work? [13:43] Zante Zapedzki: what are the complications
Pastrami Linden: initial research work into it has been done-
Pastrami Linden: it won't be difficult
Pastrami Linden: the issue is team size
Pastrami Linden: our graphics team at present essentially functions as a single unit
Pastrami Linden: so we can only handle one project at a time
Pastrami Linden: for now

Pastrami Linden: [13:03] Zante Zapedzki: It's February 2008, when will we see SpeedTree? : )
Pastrami Linden: tough to say Zante
Pastrami Linden: we've decided to focus next few quarters on stability

Pastrami Linden: no news yet- speedtree is certainly the next "feature" on our list,

Pastrami Linden: Drew Dzieciol: Last time I was here we spoke about the trees being upgraded. I see the tree's lighting now looks much better; but I was wondering if in the near future the 5 year old trees will be replaced with new ones? Thank you.
Pastrami Linden: within the next year SpeedTree or something like it will be in there
Pastrami Linden: can't tell if it's 3 months away or 9
Pastrami Linden: but soon

The licensing of Speedtree may not be compatible with the open source viewer.

In the interim, it should be easier than sculpties to allow single-prim linden trees, using a "tree system" analogous to the particle system.

At any rate, when IMPLEMENTING Speedtree, please consider VWR-303.

Following up on this issue... I'm looking at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_Roadmap

Does this mean Speedtree was quietly taken completely off the table? Would someone mind getting the cattle prod out and finding a current Linden who can speak with authority on this topic, and why Speedtree does NOT show up on http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_Roadmap ? Or was Speedtree buried somewhere within the current Roadmap material, and I'm just not seeing it?
