Hi. Me again....it seems now, having uninstalling and reinstalling clients 19.4 and 1.20.11 twice now..I'm getting the same "video card not supported" instead of just crashes. Here's a screen shot.
Hello Seann, I was just looking at your issue
The ATI Knowledge Base AMD Customer Care Site Map > Radeon Support - PC > Radeon HD 4850 > Radeon™ HD 4800 Series Hotfix http://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=35298 It does seem important to check you have a completely clean install of the drivers; that there are no 'left-overs' from any previous drivers. A driver clean up programme can help with this. This programme checks to see if your system can run SL Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Second Life Software Questions > Detailed info about Second Life-compatible systems Topic #: 4051-4203 And the DirectX Diagnostic Tool can help Vista: Click Start > (in start search) Type dxdiag > Click on the programme > Save All Information. Please attach the text file to this issue. Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Solution Finder > Technical Issue > What is a graphics card? Will mine work with Second Life? How do I tell which one I have? Topic #: 4051-3886 Did the officially released ATI Catalyst 8.6 work for you ? Amending priority as per JIRA posting guidelines Here's my dxiag log file. I'm also attaching another photo of the SL system report (which doesn't recognize the newer 4850 card as well).
As you can see...the SL system test failed on my brand new HD 4850 card. Make me wonder if I tweak my settings in the cata. 8.6 software...I might work around these? Also, I went ahead and applied the hotfix driver without trying the standard 8.6 one first. I assumed I 'needed' the newer one since it was a "hotfix"...maybe I should downgrade?
Yes I read that the Hotfix is a 'complete' package and although the DirectX Diagnostic is not reporting any problems, it does say that DirectDraw and AGP Texture Acceleration are not available and the WHQL Logo'd is n/a
I would first get ATI 8.6 working, as this is the official driver version and I would try to make sure this was a very clean install Me again. Well, I downgraded to the plan 8.6 driver (from the hotfix one)...uninstalling the hotfix first (using windows control panel app). And unfortunately, it didn't solve the issue. It is back now to just crashing everytime...instead of giving the "video card not support" message I got on the hotfix driver. I tried the -noprobe argument with no success. I hope you can find the solution to this...since I can't log in now...and my second life biz is hurting because of it. Hate to use older graphics card just to get SL to work (this newer ATI card increased my 3D scores by 35%!). Works on other games/apps...just SL having issues. Should I re-install the hotfix?
Seann, run the system text and the DirectX Diagnostic again, please.
Please also check the ATI site for any specific instruction for uninstalling and installing drivers; they might recommend a 3rd party driver cleaner to clear everything from your system. Here's my dxdiag log with just plain 8.6 installed.
And the new systest (passed this time) with the plain 8.6 drivers...
Hi. Ella, thank you for your help! I will see about uninstall these plain 8.6 drivers (again)...and then use a third party cleaner before installing them again...I'll post the result shortly.
The system test and the DirectX Diagnostic look much better with the 8.6 Catalyst. Hopefully a good driver clear out and a clean install will get you logged into SL
At Last! Well, it seems you were right. Cleaning my system with a third party graphic driver cleaner then re-installing the plain 8.6 driver (without the hotfix)...now allows me to log into SL! Of course, it still has a window stating "video card unknown"...so, it seems this needs to be added to the client's database. Btw, the RC client also works now as well. Thank you Ella for help and hopefully, by the time most people upgrade to this newer card (yes, it just came out last week)...SL and ATI will get their drivers/clients working better...so most people won't have to go through the same confused route I did.
That's great Seann; I'm pleased you can log in now
Perhaps you could file a ticket with Support to advise them of the "video card unknown" http://secondlife.com/support/ Leaving the issue open for the moment, amending priority to Major. Just when you think it's done...
Oh NO Seann, I thought this was a resolved issue
You definitely need your fan control working. Maybe there's an sequence that the GamerOSD & the 8.6 drivers need to be installed in. I know with Nvidia they say uninstall ntune, install drivers, reinstall ntune. You could check the ASUS and ATI websites for similar systems and issues and post support tickets to them for their help. Please comment on this issue when SL Support get back to you. Amending Priority back to Critical Thanks Ella. I can't seem to find any mention on ASUS or ATI about software installation order...if you can...please post. I have started a forums topic about this bug and already have one person saying they are having the same issues (http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?p=2059796
video card not supported error I get with both 19.4 and 1.20.12 with Asus 4850 card.
Seann, thank you for your feedback
This is now an issue for the LL developers. The new cards need to be tested and added to the supported system requirements. I am not sure how quickly this can be done. Hi. Me again. Well, I tested the new RC client 1.20.13 and it's much better with this video card. I was able to reboot and it didn't give me any noticeable issues (besides lower than expected framerates). The Asus GamerOSD software and SL still gives issues...I just uninstalled it...and it's simply tells me every time I reboot that the fan software needs the gamerosd to work, but I've found that if you manually set the fan it works just fine without the Gamerosd software. So, not really needed. Though, it 'should' work with SL... Thought you'd like to know...thanks!
Thank you Seann; please continue your feedback, it's great for the developers looking into this issue
Hello. I just tried the newest 1.20 official client today with the newest 8.7 ATI 64 bit drivers on Vista.....and yet again the client crashes. This time it waits until I start logging in (the blue "logging in" screen) to crash. Does it everytime. The client goes to "not responding" in Vista...and I have to manually 'end' the program via task manager or other. The older .1.19 client WAS loading fine on 8.7 drivers (with slow framerates)...as well as the test client. The Test client still works without crashing. I don't know why I'm updating this JIRA page as it is clear that Lindens aren't doing anything on this issue. I'm slightly surprised since my video card is a mainstream card...which will (and is) being used by many many people...because of it's price point. Oh well. Can't say I didn't try...
Ok, so I needed to get inworld for business...so was forced to mess with this again. I finally (after trying many things) got to get the main client (newest 1.20) to log in without crashing by totally deleting my secondlife folder under users>apps>roaming> One thing that is still a problem (and is doing it on the RC as well) is when I click show property lines in the client's menu...the whole clients crashes. Everytime. Strange since everything else seems to work (of course, I don't have to test every menu item). Please get the property lines to work again...I can't do my business well...with this bug. Thanks.
Hi it works with Catalyst 8.7 and Viewer 1.20.15 (92456).
Install new viewer in new Directory! But Grafical disabled in advanced mode under Hardwareoptions AA (Antialising). I have 2x Ati HD4870 in CrossfireX mode (Catalystdefault). Set Texture Memory to 512Mb for one Card or in Crossfire mode 1024 Mb by using two Cards, ore more if you using more cards. First dont use in Game setting for Antialising! Disabled it! Use Catalyst setting! Disable Programmsetting use and set Antialinsing to 4x and Narrow-tent filter! Hi. Thanks Mader...that's helped. The texture memory setting on my 512mb card was set as default to 2048mb! I never touched that setting before...so, don't know how it got so high (bug is SL client?). I moved it down to 432 and it seems to do much better. And yes, a clean install (or just removing the whole secondlife users directory as I did) is the key! I couldn't run the clients until I did this. Btw, please check a new bug I noticed with viewing property lines with these cards. See my bug report here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8363
Just a FYI. I decided that SL+ATI+Vista64 just isn't worth all the hassles. I was still having very high number of crashes...and I think it's the fact I'm on Vista64 is the reason. Obviously, I'm not willing to downgrade and lose 4GB of memory (from my 8GB) to go back to 32bit just for SL. Hence, I pulled my ATI 4850 card temporarily and replaced my Nvida 8800GT because SL plays nicer with Nvida products on Vista (you guys really need to test more on ATI+Vista64). Let me know, if you fix SL to play nicely with Vista 64+ATI...and I'll put back my much faster 4850 card. Cheers.
Running ATI HD4870 on quad core with Vista 64, following install of the HD4870 I experienced crashing every time I TPed in SL. Can confirm that following Mader6000 Bade's workaround fixed the problem, no more crashing, everything running smoothly. Default memory for my 512mb card was also set at 2048mb within SL as Seann reported.
I'm also having this issue, only just started happening after I got my HD4870. Thanks everyone for the suggestions but so far none have resolved the issue for me. Drivers and client are both freshly installed along with a new install of Windows.
Hello. Well, I decided to place my 4850 card back in a couple weeks ago...since Lindens are taking their sweet time fixing this issue and I needed to try out Lively from Google
The hot fix drivers on my 4850 didn't seem to cause any problems for me. Are you still seeing problems with a single card?
I am seeing problems with the 8.8 drivers, however. See Morning ladies and gents,
I have the ATI Radeon 4870 and so far I get logged into SL and crash right back out. I did switch from an INVIDIA 7600 gforce, but I was very careful to remove anything from INVIDIA before installing the new ATI video card. I went online to ATI's website and got the latest drivers for the video card. This is in the same series as Seann's card so I thought I would add my issue onto this one since I know this video card hasn't been out long at all. I would love to hear back on this if anyone has any sane advice. Thank you for your time(s) Hiai : It seems everyone has move over to this tied JIRA issue about ATI 4800 and SL not playing nice together:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8717 Lots of ideas and pointers there... ATI released the Catalyst 8.9 today, please test to see if the updated drivers resolves your issue.
Thank you I may have some good new to add regarding ATI Radeon 4850. After reading the comment trail on
Viewer: Second Life 1.21.6. (99587) Thanks Rockridge! I'm going to go try the 8.11 with my system and see what happens. I'll write back and let everyone know.
Hiai Usobuki me Crashes every time i enable "Viewing Land Borders" here is my info from the SL Client

Topic #: 4051-3884 Thank you : ) For account-specific help please post a Ticket with Support http://secondlife.com/support/ Please dont close a Assigned Jira Report who are Much informations in it
I resolved this issue with a requested for further information, as per JIRA issue posting guidelines
ATI and most of their partner Graphics Card manufacturers have released Catalyst 8.12 drivers; please comment if you have this issue, "Viewing Land Borders" with the latest drivers. Thank you : ) Hi, i had the same crashes on every login with my HD4850, but found a solution / workaround:
In ATI Catalyst Control Center go to 3d settings and switch off adaptive anti-aliasing. SL is running fine for me since. Im not sure if its working for everyone, but it might help tech stuff catching this bug k folks I had this same issue with my 4870x2 and sl crashing every login. would get to loading media and crash out. Everyone check and see if you have any NVidia software installed for the chipset, ethernet card, SATA, anything on the mobo. NVidia, ATI and SL combo makes for a nasty time haha. 2 fresh reinstalls of Vista x64. first time I updated my NVidia mobo software to the latest and SL would crash.I didnt know at the time as I installed like 20 other programs and updates, but the Second reinstall of Vista 64, went and test SL after every program/update install, Im back to all 20 od programs installed and SL still works. THE ONLY THING I DIDNT INSTALL WAS THE UPDATES FROM NVIDIA for the chipset & Serial ATA controllers. Im using what came with Windows (WinUpdates) and SL is working fine. Well fine in it is opening, FrameRates are pathetic!!! 10fps give or take 5!! ALL my other games like GTA4 Crysis, Gears of War, Kane n Lynch, GRID, Fallout3, ALL work perfect. but SL lags big time and I can't get any help from SL more than, Downgrade to the cards shown on their website??? Rather than SL get with the times??? UNEXCEPTABLE!!
ATI have released Catalyst 9.4 (4/8/2009). Please test the new drivers and add a comment.
Thank you : ) |
