Rascal, you don't by chance have dual monitors, do you? See VWR-690. Also, do you have Avatar Vertex Program turned on? That can also cause avatar rendering problems. See http://secure-web10.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=405

WorkingOnIt Linden added a comment - 21/May/07 02:41 PM
@Rascal: are you switching between SL and other apps, or going into Appearance mode a lot? Use Client menu > Character > Rebake Textures, and look for future correlation between events you initiate and when you go black.

Please re-open if this is still happening and can provide repro.

1: no I do not have duel moniters.
2: Torley, no I am not.
3: this is still happening and is related I believe to how the client process the incoming data. I am unable to repro the bug the way you want. the best I can do is this:
Log in, Relog, Teleport to another sim.
also uncached textures take three times longer to load then cached ones.

I have this problem as well as all the related/duplicates and similar problems with textures. Have left further details ('about' etc) in post about the texture bug. I do notice it all happens more on my own land...at least, usually. Cannot see how it is possible to repro as, beyond that, it happens randomly, if regularly.
Certainly my initial problem was the texture bug...recently I have had a black head/black upper half far more often than before.
As is mentioned only solution is to Log out, re-log, move to another sim. That calms things down for a while.
Will add any pertinent details as soon as I can...or see a pattern! (other than the ones I don't want to see where I don't want to see them!)

I am having same texture problem, I am using HP 9038 Laptop, running Win XP MCE Graphics is Nvidia
Driving two screens. All texture defects are seen by other users. Character texture rebake, does not resolve this problem. Log off and relog had no effect on problem. Again, problem was confirmed by other users in vicinity.

Problem observed on second machine running XP Home , but could be cleared by aharacter texture rebake.

Also I am on a PC and this happens, and also other players see me as black as well. I had the error a month ago, then it stopped, then today I tried to change my outfit and I went black. Now when I try to put my outfit back, all my textures are broken (see screenshot). I am on dual monitors so this may be related to VWR-690.

I have begun experiencing this problem recently. I had thought the difference was some network type issue as I only have this problem using SL when at work behind a corporate firewall (whereas at home I have no firewall) but after reading about VWR-690 I've been able to confirm (and noticed the correlations between the way I use SL at home and at work) that indeed the fault is reproducible when SL client is used on my external monitor as opposed to my laptop's internal display. same confirmation for the following setups..

Macbook Pro 2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI X1600 256MB VRAM (external Dell 19" E197FP via VGA @ work, external BenQ 22FPW via DVI @ home).
Client 1.18.3.5,Mac OS X.5
Client 1.18.2.1,Mac OS X.5
Client 1.18.2.1,Mac OS X.4.10
Client 1.18.2.1,Mac OS X.4.9

I hope this helps. - Jengo

On my computer it was all fine.. till one day.. that was today this started. did not change anything in my computer but I have a feeling it has something to do with task switching between SL and other heavy graphics applications.

found a little trick that seems to work to get to restore your 'black' textures.

for instance your shirt shows black

1 . Go in edit appearence
2. when in appearence select another shirt to wear
3. now change back to the one that showed black
4. leave edit appearences

this should work in about al the circumstances

Hope this helps
Tonny

I have experience this same problem now for some time. I can run for several days with no problems and the out of the blue, all or parts of the avatar are completely black. Normally this only affects everything but the Head & Hair. The only way I can correct the problem is to find a secluded place somewhere, remove all clothing, leave the avatar in the "edit appearance" screen and the clear cache, rebake, exit and then reload. This usually requires several attempts to clear the problem. This has affected me across several versions of the client including beta version. I am currently using 1.18.4 (3). I have found a sure way to "set off" this problem was to make some sort of change of clothing. It doesn't matter if I simply click inventory and wear the item, or edit appearance and change anything.

This has also happened on several different computers with different Adaptor cards, and with one or duel monitors. I have also seen were the displays in edit appearance and clothing/skin textures have been corrupted with images from other inventory items or with items I have seen at various locations. I sometimes see this problem brought upon by simply teleporting someplace.

It would seem to me that this problem is related to the internal data of the local client since the problem is not visible to others around me. Possibly some sort of corruption in the Cache when the avatar is changed or Rez's in another location.

I realize that there are may duplicate tickets all related to the same problem, but simply stating that and marking them as resolved doesn't make the problem go away. Maybe someone should be actively looking into a solution, then merely acknowledging the fact that MANY people are having the same problem

A fix that works for me:

Slide the SL client to your main machine, not external monitor. then quit.
Launch SL again.
Client Menu/Character/Rebake Textures.
Works for me.

I'm on Leopard, MaBook Pro with plenty of RAM.

PR Noyes' suggestion worked for me. I guess running this on extended desktop will make the avatar all black! strange!

will have to look at my drivers/settings.

Catten Carter added a comment - 15/Jan/08 03:24 AM - edited
Same problem here on an IBM notebook - dual monitor setup - PR Noyes fix worked, but the bug should imo still be corrected

Eyes had to be replaced after the fix - they were missing

FTW Wakowski added a comment - 02/Feb/08 05:06 AM
PR Noyes, what do you mean by slide client to your main machine? i have to fix this problem and it's really pissing me off. i'm all black, except the face. no dual monitors, using ATI HD 2600. thank you in advance.

FTW Wakowski added a comment - 16/Feb/08 06:32 AM
ok..fixed it..If you got ATI video card, go to ATI catalyst settings and make sure u have the following setup ;

SMOOTHVISION:Anti-Aliasing = use application setiings, filter=box
Enable Adaptive Anti Aliasing= slider is on quality
Antisotropic filtering = use application settings
Catalyst A.I = Disable Catalyst A.I is unchecked.slider is on standart
open gl settings= triple buffering is checked, force 24 bit is unchecked, support DXT formats is checked

good luck!
