Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-20670

 Description  « Hide
Since the last 2 sl updates sculpties of large sizes look extreamly mangled and mis-shaped. 2 updates before the recent one they looked fine and straight, small sculpties look ok. I have tried many different settings hoping to imporve the issue. Only me and a small handfull of people see it this way and others see them as fine. Here are some photos I took of what I see. These are sculpty window on a house I built, they are supposed to be straight. No matter what I do or how long I wait they stay this way and dont look right, i have this problem with other large scuplties (stairs etc.)

Alot of those issues say edit the prim and it will rez the rest of the way,in my case this does not work.when the problem first started i cleared my cache and relogged, it fixed the problem for 2 minutes and then they went from perfectly straight to mangled right in front of my eyes. If this was a loading issue why would they be fine then and then act like they derezz. Its only been an issue since the last 2 RLC viewers and latest Sl normal viewer for me. Before those releases they looked fine to me. I can zoom out and in till im blue in the face, even rez new windows and still they are batched up.Like they say in there its like they are almost fully rezzed then stop. But editing the prims or altering them in any way does not hel the situation nor remedy the problem. Hopefully one day this bug will get fixed cause it is really annoying when my home I built looked perfect to me and now is all mangled to death.

Increasing to major as all of these similar issues related to Windlight's inability to handle sculpties are set at least to major.

Yes I have had this same problem. I have updated my view and my release candidate as of Aug 22nd and still have the same issue. Right mouse clicking on the sculptie sometimes snaps it into correct shape but not always.

The only solution I have come up with is to log off and log back on at my last location. This usually works but can take several tries and I usually still have to right mouse click on most of the sculpties to get them to render right.

My conclusion is that there are two things going on here. One the sculpties that snap into shape instantly when right mouse clicked on they must be loading correctly but the viewer isn't handling the information correctly. Maybe the view thinks the sculptie is farther away from the camera than it really is so it is rendering it at a lower resolution. The second problem is probably a loading issue.

I have read that these problems should be fixed in the next update next week. Let's hope so. I truly believe that sculpties are the future for SL. Now if we could just get more vertices per scupltie that would really open to the door to unlimited possibilities.

I'm having this problem too. My experiences are:
  • normal size sculpty, nothing big.
  • sculpty will load perfectly and instantly when rezzed
  • looks okay for a couple of minutes, also when zooming in and out. LOD changes are handled well and quickly.
  • after a couple of minutes, when zooming out OR zooming in, sculpty gets blobby and distorted, and stays that way. Distortion is not just low LOD resolution, it's far more distorted than that.
  • once distorted, right clicking on the object AND going into edit mode snaps it back into its correct shape. Just right clicking is not enough (in my viewer)
  • re-assigning the sculpty texture solves the problem too
  • once distorted, I experience normal LOD changes. Given the distorted shape, rendering goes smoothly.
  • the above process can be repeated endlessly

SL 1.19.1 (4) (can't upgrade unfortunately, it crashes me)

How is this in 1.20.15 (the official release viewer?)

Ramzi Linden added a comment - 17/Sep/08 11:34 AM
This wasnt being properly tracked internally before, but i have corrected that.

Can you confirm if this mangled appearance continues in the 1.21 Release Candidate viewer? You can obtain this test version on this download page: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php#download-Testviewers

I have the same problem too when I build something with sculpties.
It also get distorted when I zoom out but looks perfectly alright from a nearer distance.
I asked a friend to test it out by zooming in and out and it's perfectly alright on her end.

I've upgraded to the latest SL viewer, 1.20.16.97603

My problem is the same exactly as stated by Thom Lunasea above. See the two scupltie pictures i attached above. They are all distorted until i right click/edit/object. I reported this months ago and still no fix despite so may people complaining. This is only one of the many related tickets open on this subject. It can't be that Linden Labs can't figure this out??

Is this related to the abnormally low default for RenderVolumeLODFactor? I found setting this to 5.0 makes a huge difference.

LL, why is this setting so low? In my testing setting it to 5.0 has no effect of FPS but actually makes sculpties work as expected.

My sculpty looks fine in preview, but when I pay to upload it and apply it to a primitive, it looks mangled beyond recognition.

Dar, please see this article in Knowledge Base How can I improve performance ?

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. Nvidia have recently released Version: 191.07 Release Date: 2009.10.05

Have you tried the workaround suggested by Arcane Clawtooth added a comment - 21/Oct/08 01:18 AM

Thank you : )

Please make sure the debug setting RenderVolumeLOD is set to a power of two, like 2, 4, or 8. Other values will be unpredictable.

I'm now having this issue. But I just upgraded my Video card to... Asus Radeon EAH4650 with 1GB memory.

I installed the latest drivers (vs 9.11) I got directly from ATI.
I see this mainly on meduim or larger Sculpty trees.
And on some other scuplties (not trees).

I have tried the workaround suggested by Arcane Clawtooth. Didn't help.
I believe it lowered my FPS.

I don't kow what to do about it. I hope that LL can fix this issue with SCULPTIES.
