Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-15877

 Description  « Hide
After using RC 1.20 a few minutes my Mac become totally non responsive, not only the Second Life Viewer has crashed, but my whole Unix system ...
Congratulations to be able to crash an Unix system completely, no one has accomplished that before ...

Normally I'm able to force quit the culprit, and only shut down the offending program, not in this case, I really have to reboot my whole OS ...

Perhaps a bad memory leak causes this very strange behavior ...

You understand I'm UNABLE to use that RC viewer, not I'm able to use the default browser, 1.19, because that viewer stalls sl viewer for some minutes, then I can work again, then the freezes come back, and so on, in half an hour I have more than 10 viewer freezes ...

Strange, but the Beta Grid viewer still works very fine and fast, as does the OnRez viewer.

What can I do to use your viewers again please ?

sincerely,

dolfke.

are you using the German OS or the American? You may want to check your drivers to make sure that you're using most recent drivers. Sometimes there's a delta between when the German video drivers get updated. That might be causing your problems.

Hello dolfke and arif. I'm experiencing the same problem using US English (that term makes me cringe but thats another matter). I'm using a current generation Macbook Pro 15" same GPU as dolfke. Am a Mac support tech and quite conscious that my machine is as updated as is possible and relevant to this machine. Desperately wanting to use the RC client for spacenavigator features but getting repeated lockups freezes which are more severe in RC than official client ( which I noted in VWR-7474 ) but doesn't seem to be related to onscreen AV population in latest RC (hapens just as frequently when I'm alone), this problem has existed for me in RC7 and now RC8 too with increasing severity leading to eventual complete system lockup where I've no option but to power off (something has to be really wrong for that to be necessary). In such cases there is no opportunity to submit a crash report, in cases where I manage to force quit I often get a lockup in the crash-reporter also (possibly out of memory?). Please contact me if there is anything I can do to try to help work on this issue.

Fang

PS: I LOVE SL but I'm missing the experience recently

Trust me, this has nothing to do with the german vs "american" OS. SL 1.20RC's can totally lock up any MBP using the Nvidia 8600M GT, there's been a LOT of jira entries about this. Similar failure modes also appear to be happening to windows users with nvidia cards in some cases as well.

Can confirm that same problem persists (same symptoms) after update to Mac OS X.5.3 (attaching text file of Concole crashlog)

Fang.

Recent crashlog from complete machine lock-up from Fang's Macbook Pro (Mac OS X.5.3, 2.5GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, NVidia 8600/512MB, SL 1.19.14)

for Mac, there is just ONE file, so the German and the English version are just the same code, only the translation of the displayed text is changed.

it seems a long time problem, viewers vor Mac are VERY unstable, and it seems LL is not willing to do anything about it ...

even not now the Mac platform is growning very fast, should we really switch to Blue Mars then ?

I sincerely hope not, so p l e a s e LL do something about that bad Mac experience your viewers have on out platform ?

thnak you so much !

Updated the Issue slightly for Spelling mistakes, relevance and readability. : )

For those of you who are experiencing complete lockups, please follow up with:
  • System information from Help-About Second Life
  • What you were doing when the lockup happened
  • Whether you have changed your render settings from the default

It would be helpful to know if these lockups correspond with anything like the size of nearby crowds, how long you have been logged in, etc

Since I upgraded to
Systeemversie: Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F32)
Kernelversie: Darwin 9.5.0
Opstartvolume: System.HD
Opstartmodus: Normaal
Computernaam: Jvhs_Leopardje_17
Gebruikersnaam: JVH (jvh)
Tijd sinds opstarten: 3 dagen 36 minuten

and the new RC 1.21.0, the complete lockup has gone ...

But the performance is still quite low,
I can't use a draw distance of more than 128m, or I have still short intermittent lockups.

So I have indeed to alter the default settings.

And yes, its getting worse the longer I'm logged into sl.
