Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-16429

 Description  « Hide
The color of clickable names in IM or chat history may be a little harsh, or too dark. Perhaps a lighter shade of blue?

Suggested: RGB 189, 189, 255 as in screenshot.

Blue text on a blue background is horrible.

Personally, I want to just disable it completely. The names don't need to be a different color to be clickable. Just give me the white names back and keep the new functionality.

I believe the design of the new clickable names IS changable. This should have been mentioned in release notes, and it was not.

The color of the names uses the same color that is set in Preferences. Go to Preferences > Text Chat > Chat Color > and use the color picker for "URLs". Click OK or Apply to close Preferences. (This is the same color that hyperlink URLs are rendered, such as if you type "http://secondlife.com" in chat.)

NOTE: This new color for hyperlink URLs will take affect immediately for the next chatted hyperlink.
BUT: It is possible the color change MAY only take affect for the clickable Resident name after exiting and restarting the Second Life viewer.

This should be satisfactory for resolving this issue? If not please reopen with additional specification.
(A separate task should be created for the request to simply turn off this new feature-- we would want to track votes on that separately, not confuse it with making the existing feature more usable.)

Resolving as fixed with the documentation of How To in the comments.

I'd like to turn this into a request for a different default color, because I believe it'll help not offend the eyes of new users, or even existing users who aren't prepared to explore settings. Come to think of it, especially since the change requires a restart, I would probably have seen that the setting made no difference and changed it back thinking it wasn't what I was looking for.

If I had to make a suggestion, I'd say... a lighter blue.

I'll change the description to match

Attaching image of chat with the described setting changed to a lighter blue: RGB 189, 189, 255

Is the color for the names darker than that for the URL, or is that an illusion? Maybe we could just change it so it's lighter instead

What I'd really like to see is a new section of colors_base.xml for these items so they can be incorporated into skins with color schemes other than Dazzle. For example, something like:

<!-- CHAT COLOR -->
ChatColorChat
ChatColorIM
ChatColorSystem
ChatColorObjects
ChatColorOwner
ChatColorChatBubbles
ChatColorLinks
ChatColorScriptErrors

Right now, all of these are set in settings.xml, which we can't exactly include in our skin files.

Shouldn't the text for "URLs" be changed to "URLs and Clickable Names" now? The entire Text Chat tab could really use a better layout, anyway.

Thanks for reporting this. We will investigate the suggestion!

Also McCabe has an excellent point about exposing these settings to colors_base.xml and colors.xml, so that third party skins could manipulate the color.

We discussed this in Rx triage - we think the default chat colors has been exposed to skinning in 1.20.

Request that McCabe open a bug specifically for pulling out chat colors into skinning.

The chat color does seems better in this lighter version. Color change request has been assigned to WorkingOnIt Linden.

Thanks guys.

@Erica: nope, just the chat history and IM text colors in the Communicate floater. All the colors set in the "Text Chat" tab haven't been exposed.

Lemme create a new issue and link it.

I think the "change the default color of clickable names to be lighter" part of this task was finished and released. It seems like there's a second issue, linked, for the skinning task. Should this one be marked resolved?
