You can specify "-autologin" on the command line to start SL. That'll bypass the login screen.
Linked to internal equivalent, "Enable ability to re-login to SL after viewer times-out". Also older and very closely related, SL-2773 - "Add "Log out" option to File menu so that it's easier to logout and then back in again".
This isn't as easy to do as it might seem: it's a complicated engineering problem. It's also been suggested that if easier, there could be a way to auto-restart Second Life to relog (like how Firefox can auto-restart itself after installing new extensions). having SL automaticly close and reload (but still allowing one to not loose currently unsaved/saving scripts and notecards as well checking the last msgs one receive) would probably be a big help while the perfect solution don't show up
