 Description  « Hide
As soon as I change Avatar clothes, skin or eyes the Avatar renders black when Anti-Aliasing is enabled (regardless which mode of anti-aliasing).

The effect is not only noticed by me, but by everyone in-world (my avatar appears to be black for everyone else, too).

Traditional fixes as there are Character Check and rebaking textures do not help, any other graph preferences tweaking is useless, only disabling Anti-Aliasing helps (tho it renders fast then, still with black sparkles then, and problems like flashing horizons and other glitches appear).

When antialiasing is on, a requested change for an avatar layer renders black. 1. I tried to change eyebrows in my inventory and the head layer turned black. the rest of the body is the same. see attachment photo. specs below

This has NOT been fixed in RC 1.20.5 (05/01/08). Additionaly the new relese added another nice feature: Reflections and glitches while performing ANY task related to the UI. I added a screenshot of my black rendered Avatar while editing appearance. Look at the complete mess and enjoy!

Torley Linden added a comment - 07/May/08 07:07 AM
Frustrating! Changed priority to Major since you can disable antialiasing as a workaround... but it is nice to have.

Vivienne Schell added a comment - 07/May/08 02:53 PM - edited
YES, Torley. Your colorful home looks much better with anti-aliasing enabled, damn!! Btw., are you married?????

Btw: The glow mess can be worked around completely by reducing RenderGlowStrength to 0.150. Default seems to be 0.350.

Vivienne Schell added a comment - 16/May/08 12:53 PM - edited
I tried the ATI 1.5 drivers for the X800 via Xtools and OpenGL Profiler on the nVidia Card. The drivers were recognised correctly by the SL App, but....still the same. So i do NOT think this is Nvidia driver related.

Vivienne Schell added a comment - 12/Jun/08 02:54 PM
In 1.20.10 the black texture on my avatar is replaced by a SCREENSHOT of the application window.

More colorful, in fact, and it really looks sooo cool...but...

Hrmpf.

Vivienne Schell added a comment - 26/Jun/08 04:26 AM
Still not fixed in 1.20.11 RC...

Screenshot (instead of black color) projected on Avatar and default GlowStrength (0.350) causing the effects shown on screenshot above when anti-aliasing is enabled and rebaking textures/changing clothes.

Vivienne Schell added a comment - 10/Jul/08 01:32 PM
Still not fixed in 1.20.13 (See screenshots 3. and 4.)

Is there any hope left?

antialiasing on or off my avatar's skin and clothes appear black to me and others inworld.
ive had the video settings from "low" to "ultra" and it still appears black.
even installed the new NIVIDA 8500GT Drivers 6.14.11.7519 with no luck.
error is in release canidate and regular release but, not in the beta grid release.
only attachments appear to rezz correctly.

No change in the RC 1.21. Four Months workingonitlinden. Will it ever get fixed?

Shibari Twine added a comment - 01/Sep/08 09:36 PM
Black avatars when using the ATI powered Macs are a result of Hardware Skinning. Have you tried turning that off?

On my system turning off Hardware Skinning also increases frame rates by 4 fps.

This has not been fixed in 1.21 (RC3). Still glow and avatar rendering is totally messed up in AA mode. Waiting for a fix or at least an explaination by workingonitlinden (are you?) since APRIL.

I am experiencing the problem of my avatar turning completely black after attempting to change textures, but I do not have anti-aliasing on. I have tried all of the usual tricks, including deselecting "Enable VBO", rebaking textures, and going into Edit Avatar. One thing I did notice, in Edit Avatar, all of the preview windows are either entirely black, or a mess of pixels.

Once again, I am experiencing this without Anti Aliasing turned on, and Palletized Textures has also been disabled.

edit

Hmmm, I seem to only be experiencing this when using SL on one of my monitors, but not the other. Very strange. I'll have to investigate further.

It also happens to me, I have done all procedures known to be, clear cache, reset Avatar, using simulator with the original settings and also the drivers for video, tested with various versions since the most recent until the oldest, use two monitors, set up to use only one and did the whole process known to solve the problem but not solved anything in, I format the desktop, installing Windows Vista, Windows XP, and no improvements, is that the interessanet bought a new laptop, rather than installing SL resolved. Look at photos on this issues:

This is not related JUST to anti-aliasing. I get this same problem even with AA turned off. It's priority needs to be bumped back up to where it belongs. And I experience it on two different LCD monitors, on the same computer.

Aaron Cianci added a comment - 06/Dec/08 12:37 PM
Also, I just did some more detailed testing...this issue goes away when you shut off Palletized textures, and rebake, if I'm using my PRIMARY monitor only (a 19" widescreen). If I move SL to my secondary mointor (a 26" widescreen), it comes back, regardless of what settings I have.

With all the updates, it appears that SL has killed dual monitor setups. Does everyone else getting this have dual monitors as well?

Vivienne Schell added a comment - 22/Dec/08 04:03 PM
Update: It has become even worse in 1.22

As a proof i attached the jpg named "Lindencrap".

Please adore the fine screenshot rendering on my avatar and the beautiful glow all around the opened windows! Beautiful! And the alpha channel error (Look at the Radio which shines through the gazebo windows).

THANK YOU LL, for all the "workingonitlindens" since April.. Thank you, thank you...

Oh, i forgot to mention that 1.22.4 kills performance by an average of 30 percent, but that´s just another story.

I just saw this black thing happen to two of my friends when they did random Rebake Texture. First one did a Rebake and we were all surprised to see parts of her (including her tongue and teeth) turn black. Then another friend Rebaked and the same thing happened to him. We could all see it, and not all of us use the same viewer settings (I have mine set to Anti-Aliasing 4x and one of the two friends has his Anti-Aliasing turned off completely). We all emptied our caches, etc, but nothing seemed to get rid of it. I'm the only one of the three who didn't get black parts and I'm the only one who didn't Rebake. Now I'm scared to!

Turning off Palletized Textures worked for me.

Windows 7
Quad core Intel
8 gig
NVideo 9800GT

I had turned these off, and turned them back on after Palletized Textures fixed it.
Hardware Skinning - on
Avatar Textures - on

Anti Aliasing - on

So far so good...

I got a friend saying this is an Nvidia bug with the newer drivers, they demo'd this for me with an Nvidia 7600GS, using the driver is shipped with the card and showing a clean run of secondlife, they then updated to a newer version of the driver and encountered the avatar blackout problem, they then disabled palatized textures in the advanced menu and rebaked which alleviated the problem with the newer drivers for the 7600GS

They showed me before and after of the driver issue and im convinced its related to the newer Nvidia drivers, HOWEVER, they were only able to speculate as to why other users could see them glitching.

I tried this using my Nvidia and my ATi machine, and the bug occurred on the Nvidia machine only

and as an additional note anti-aliasing is disabled

My tests show this bug occurs anti-aliasing or not
Nvidia 9400GT
Bug observed on Nvidia 6800,7600,9400
Bug not observed Radeon X550

an additional note, their disabling of palletizing textures, I cant seem to be able to do that on my machine, the item is missing from advanced menu, I then after being unable to test this tried an alternate viewer which did allow me to disable palletized textures,it alleviated the bug after the first rebake and not then after. and on an additional note I tried many different things too, one avatar skin I have naked or clothed causes this bug regardless on my system, however a friend of mine has purchased the exact same avatar and does not observe the same results on her machine, and on additional note with other avatar skins ive noticed some of them with certain clothing layers attached will cause this bug to occur, however that same clothing tried with yet another skin wont,(it seems to be certain combinations of clothing and skins will increase the likelyhood of this bug)

and on yet another additional note something that has me scratching my head with this is I havent changed drivers lately and have been using this machine a while and the bug started to suddenly occur 2 days ago, my friend visited trying to diagnose the issue, and logged in as herself, and despite having some of the same skins I have, did not encounter the issue, however upon me logging in the issue re-occurred.

Yet another aditional note: I just noticed some ATI users are reporting this, given the observations ive had and what ive been shown, are the ATi users experiencing this with their own avatars or are they observing this on nearby avatars that have had their textures baked?

For me it works perfect.
I'm Nvidia user and i using the last drivers version 190.89. Anisotropic enabled, 4x Antialiasing and quality in Ultra, 2 monitors at 1680x1050 on a GeForce 9800GTX+.
Previously i used these settings an a GF 8600GT and it occurred to me.
The Nvidia graphics work perfectly for me now.
