EVERY viewer I can use on my Mac now has the same problem :

I can use inworld for a few minutes, then sl graphics freese up, and sl is irresponsible for a few minutes, then it comes available again, for some short time, then unusable / responding again / unusable / and so on for ever ...

What I don't understand is that OnRez does NOT has that problem ...

I could overcome that strange behaiviour with using the Dazzle viewer, but since this is no mora usable on my Mac, I don't have any LL viewer to use anymore ...

All began to happen with the coming of the 1.19 viewers ...
Any older viewer is unusable on Macintosh !

Could this be due to the card over heating?

For example, my gfx card very easily gets too hot and SL slows down from 30FPS to just 5 until the heat is reduced. I get a fast, slow, fast, slow sort of effect in gfx heavy places because of this.

StevenSDF makes a good point. We have seen overheating with this Macbook and card. If you can keep it cooler when you're running it, that'd be a good start. Additionally we also know that we're currently having problems with Nvidia cards. We're working on this internally and are tracking it. Thanks.

hello,

I'm constantly monitoring the temperature of all my system components, and I can assure you it has NOTHING to do with a to high temperature, since all measures are in normal circumstances, even my internal ventilator keeps running very slowly because there is no exceptional heat.

The only difference between my Intel Macbook Pros is the faster CPU, the higher internal memory and GPU, witch is 512 MB (256 MB my older one).

There I absolutely have NO problems running any SL viewer.

Back to my new Macbook Pro, I give you an overview of the temperatures:

51 °C CPU A Diode
43 CPU Core 1
39 CPU Core 2
30 Enclosure Bottomside
51 GPU Heatsink
61 GPU Diode
52 Main Heatsink 1
42 Main Heatsink 2

I really hope LL can fast resolve this problem, as all new Macbooks are equiped with that Nvidia 8600 GPU.

Sincerely,

Dolfke.

Dolfke, your issue seem very similar to those reported on VWR-1715; that issue has been imported by LL and within the comments there is a possible workaround.

Please would you check out that issue and maybe add your details and vote.

Thank you

yep, I read it, but there is still, after almost a whole year, no solution provided by LL ???

I'm getting VERY depressed by it ...

Dolfke, could you please test the latest RC 1.20.11. Also have you updated your Mac OS to 10.5.3 ?

If this is still an issue, please could you attach your SecondLife log and latest crash report to this issue

I can confirm that the performance problems on MacBook Pros are beck with a vengeance and that there is currently no functional viewer available for use on this machine.

Graphics-related performance problems deteriorated again markedly about a week ago (June 21) and have now (since the deploy of the new server version?) gotten so bad that SL is unusable on my machine. For example, I've now spent 15 minutes trying to aim for a door so I can walk through it.

I'm still on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 0.5.3. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor; 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, L2 cache 4MB, bus speed 800 MHz, 256 MB VRAM. ADSL modem 24 Mbit/sec ; computer-modem connection via ethernet. Nothing exceptional about connection speed or packet loss.

I've tried both the RC and the regular client and none of them work so at the moment I have no possibility of doing anything meaningful in SL.

All the symptoms are the same as in previous reports (from me and others, here and in the JIRA) about severe lag using the MacBook Pro. Hence it would appear that a solution similar to that applied to earlier server versions to at least partially remedy this problem should work also this time. Is anyone checking up on this?

Well, its geting worser and worser for Mac users, even RC11 is not stable, and the freeses on my system are unaccaptable : I truely think LL wants to discourage Mac users to puch them to Windows version, since I hear the Linux versions have severe problems to with graphics drivers ...

Linden Labs, PLEASE, take some action so Mac users can use your beautifull program again, and I mean with that Mac Intel users, on PPC platforms everything is working fine, but still lesser performance than Windows users ...

I'm affraid you will have to write code from start, since cocoa and carbon apps are very different ...
The problems began to be seriously with the Windlight viewers, those are very beautifull and high tech, but simply UNUSABLE on modern Macs ...

HELPPPPPPPPP PLEASE !!!

I also have the new MacBookPro with GeForce 8600M GT card, and the 1.20.11 RC viewers ALL start to lock up and freeze the machine within minutes of log in. Freezes last anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes or so. The 1.20.11.90229 RC is a bit better than the previous RC viewer, in that at least it doesn't take down the OS as the freezes get progressively longer. PLEASE address this issue. Its widely believed that the Mac viewer doesn't get nearly the attention that the PC viewer does. Why are the Macs not as fully supported as the PCs???

Linden Lab has been having this issue for over a year now as I've suffered from it as soon as I got my MacBook Pro (currently running at 2.4GHz with 3GB of RAM, 10.5.4). There HASN'T been the slightest improvement over all that time despite posts from Linden Labs employees. Just do a Google search for 'performance "second life" "macbook pro"' and you'll find plenty of links to various websites where people complain about abysmal performance. I've been a developer for over 15 years, initially on NeXT then on OS X after Apple released it. I just don't understand what the problem is. I have never seen such a situation lingering for so long. Linden Lab has absolutely no excuse. They whether don't care or there isn't anybody competent enough working for them that understand what's going on. On the specific issue of the NVidia video card, they say that there are problems with the driver. They were saying this under Tiger and they still repeat the same thing. At least, under Leopard, the machine doesn't lock up anymore. But, I have played Need For Speed Carbon, Warcraft III, Neverwinter Night II and Age of Empires III, all at their highest settings and none of these applications can bring my laptop to his knees like any Second Life viewer will. There is a problem with how the graphics are handled in both the release candidate and the regular viewer. When I initially login, I get 15-20 fps. After maybe 5 minutes, I get down to 3-5 fps in my region. If I teleport in my skybox 1000 meters above, I get back 45-50 fps all the time. Of course, there is nothing around but, frankly, when I'm standing in my house on the ground, what is it that SL has to update? All textures are visible usually (I say usually because sometimes, it can take up to 10 minutes before all textures have been downloaded, totally unacceptable). So, for now, I spend most of my time on my skybox platform. That's the only place I can reasonably type and receive IMs. As soon as I get on the ground, the frame rate goes down to 3-5 fps if I'm in the low graphic settings, 2-3 fps if I keep it at High as the viewer recommends. Can you imagine? You get about 2 or 3 frames in one second! It's a total joke!

So, don't hold your breath. Nothing will improve. Otherwise it would have since. It's not an issue important enough for Linden Labs. With the experience I have in the software development field, I have the impression that they're trying to chew more than what they can. Hopefully, there will be some other open source projects that will come along and we'll have an alternative.

If and only if someone at Linden Labs would care to use a MacBook Pro to do their work in Second Life, then maybe they would understand (and no, I'm not talking about installing BootCamp and running XP or Vista on the MacBook Pro). There is nobody in his own sane mind that would accept such performance...

Dolfke Barbosa added a comment - 13/Jul/08 07:56 AM
I think Linden Labs has to hire some decent Mac programmer, who knows somethng about performance like sl viewers have this plenty in sl ...

but, I'm affraid its NO issue for LL, Mac users are so unimportant ... ?

I just wanted to add on to this thread... i am a macbook pro user and i have been dealing with lag like you all have... i have debated going to a windows machine but the problems i have been hearing about with vista had me be patient... i gotta say that when apple announced their new macbook pro with the nvidia geforce 9400M and the 9600M GT i thought wait to see what others say... i couldn't wait

i bought it and let me tell you... you will not be disappointed at all! i am blown away by the performance of this machine here is the technology:

macbook pro 10.5.5
2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo
4GB 1067 MHz DDr3

I ordered it online to get the best laptop i could get and i am psyched by what i have been experiencing.... not one moment of lag in the 30+ hours since i put this machine in use. I am running at high graphic performance and last night i was pulling down about 34fps...

thanks for the work around advice but i will not longer need to jump through hoops to make my macbook run SL - wahooo!

Running out to buy a new MacBook is NOT a solution for those of us who have perfectly good MacBook Pros that are less than a year old. Its the SL client that needs fixing.

meni kaiousei added a comment - 10/Dec/08 03:51 AM
The latest release candidate 1.22.2 (and latest nightly build that will go into 1.22.3) fixed most freezes on my Macbook pro (same model). Also the upcomming mac osx 10.5.6 is supposedly having fixes related to this.

The workaround you can find here shows success too:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release_Candidate/1.21

o On some Macs, there are reports of periodic and cyclic freezing of the computer when running this viewer, similar to Viewer 1.20.
o WORKAROUND #1: One workaround that may help is to reduce the Draw Distance below 128m in Preferences > Graphics tab > Custom > Draw Distance (slider). Also, if you have Disabled Camera Constraints from the Advanced menu, behavior is improved if you do not Disable Camera Constraints.
o WORKAROUND #2: Another workaround that may help is to use an additional argument "-set YieldTime 20" in the Arguments.txt:
+ To set this argument, right-click (or control-click) the Second Life Release Candidate application and choose "Show package contents".
+ In the resulting Finder window, open Resources and in there should be a file named "arguments.txt". Open in text edit, add the argument to the end of the line in there and Save.
+ Close the text edit and run Second Life Release Candidate application.
+ This causes the viewer to sleep for 20 milliseconds every frame. It will slow the frame rate down a little, but may help with freezing.

Because this reports duplicates VWR-7779 (Mac viewer suffers from cyclic pauses/freezes/fatal hangs), which is monitored by the Lindens, I will close this issue, and ask you to direct your comments to VWR-7779.
