*) I use HP-provided nvidia drivers for my series 8 notebook card, not the ones off nivida.com/drivers. The latest version for my system is Version: 7.15.11.7432 A Release Date: 2008-03-25 . The graphics driver control panel reports this version as Forceware 174.32. nvidia.com/drivers lists a version Geforce (not "Forceware") 174.74, also released in March, as still in beta

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_174.74.html

It also doesn't list Forceware 174 at all, only up to 169. I assume that the current version for my notebook has been made available early to HP. However it's the latest official driver for this notebook/graphics card combination.

*) After installing this driver, the current main viewer version 1.19.1.4 becomes unstable. The driver usually crashes when alt-zooming or rotating the avatar around. The symptoms are:

The viewer window becomes unresponsive, then strobe-like flickering, graphics driver crash and recovery logged to OS console. Once the driver is back up, the viewer window is still there but unresponsive and needs to be shut down.

I reverted to the previous version which reports as Forceware 156.x dated November 2007 and main viewer is stable again, as it used to be. I would like to establish if there is a specific issue with this nvidia graphics driver version. It would be helpful if comments would focus on this particular driver, not other versions or general graphics driver issues related to the SL viewer.

I have a very similar problem to this person. Same drivers, EVGA Nvidia 9800 GX2 card, Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit fully patched, same main viewer.

Marked as related to VWR-6343 because the driver instability affects the 1.20 Release Candidate Viewer as well --> i.e. same symptoms but probably not the same cause. As noted above, the flickering / driver crash occurs with 1.19.1.4 as well using this driver.

Edited the title to more accurately reflect the scope of the issue.

Here is the Nvidia Customer Service response to my complaint:

Hello Steve,

Thank you for updating us with the information requested.

The issue you are experiencing is not the general behavior of the graphics card or its driver. Since, you have mentioned with the beta driver version 174.93 from guru3D, everything is working fine, for time being you can work with that driver. Meanwhile, I would request you to wait for the reply from the developer to check and troubleshoot the issue.

I will look forward to your reply to assist you better.

Best regards,
NVIDIA Customer care
end of response

IMHO, I think they're wrong.

Hi Steve,

To assist us in examining this further, could you please attach a copy of your SecondLife.log file (Documents and Settings/%username%/Application Data/SecondLife/Logs/SecondLife.log) immediately after a crash occurs with the 174 driver?

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem with my HP laptop with a Nvidia 8600M GS graphics card. The driver version is 7.15.11.7432.

I crash when I try to log on. Occasionally, I succeed in getting logged on, but then crash when I start flying. This seems to be especially true when I cross sims. I also crash when I teleport. On very rare occasions, I am able to be on for awhile, and then I crash.

This didn't seem to happen when I first purchased this computer a couple months ago. I think it started with the last SL update.

I've attached my log file.

Thank you.

It didn't look as though my file went through, so I'm sending it again.

Same card, same issue: flickering followed by "driver stopped responding; Windows has recovered the driver."

Downgrading SL settings to lowest resolution makes the problem happen a lot less often.
Seem to be happen more often with streaming music on.
This started happen lately, after one of the SL upgrades.

Current versions:

Second Life: 1.21.6 (99587) Oct 14 2008 17:42:25 (Second Life Release)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2194 MHz)
Memory: 2046 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (Build 6001)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 8600M GS/PCI/SSE2

The NVIDIA driver version is 7.15.11.7432. HP has is as their latest.
