 Description  « Hide
1.20.0 will completely lock up the graphics on the Mac very quickly if avatar is moved around a sim. The UI becomes jerky and suddenly the whole computer appears locked up. I can tell from audio that the Mac is otherwise running fine, but the graphics and UI are frozen.

***The only way out of this appears to be to power cycle the computer***

This appears to be avatar movement based, because I can use the flycam and the very nice SpaceNavigator to zip around the sim as much as I want, with no issues whatsoever. It only appears to occur when I am moving my avatar around the same locations.

Below are my computer details and my SL graphics settings details:

Please note that 1.20.1.84760 does not fix this issue.

Also 1.20.1.84760 still shows avatar imposters enabled in prefs (was supposedly disabled in this build).

Also 1.20.1.84760 still has the mighty mouse being detected as a joystick and having flycam enabled problem.

I found that RC2 stopped locking up my system regularly. It would lock me up once in a great while, and I could live with it.

RC3 started out great, then started locking me up time after time. I had total system lock ups 3x in about 30 or 40 minutes last night. I went back to RC 2 even before you guys yanked RC 3.

RC4 is still doing this. My computer freezes completely within 10 minutes of running this version. RC2 was the only version of 1.20 that did not lock up my computer solid.

i decided to try 1.20 again yesterday/today to catch/report problems. noticed a lot of them. i have had 2 or 3 times that the mouse locks up first, and if i happen to have focus in another app i can still type there. then pressing ctrl + alt + del locks up the pc completely requiring a hard reset. this is on XP.

Beware, please check you have the most up-to-date drivers for your graphics card

You can check you have the latest graphics drivers by either going to your manufacturer's site or by checking here
Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Solution Finder > Technical Issue > How do I get the latest drivers for my graphics card? Topic #: 4051-3884
http://secondlife.com/support/?questionID=3884

Then please open a new issue with your full computer specs (Help > About Second Life)

Please run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
XP: Click on the Start button and select Run. In the Open text box. Enter "dxdiag" and click OK > Save All Information.

Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Solution Finder > Technical Issue > What is a graphics card? Will mine work with Second Life? How do I tell which one I have? Topic #: 4051-3886
http://secondlife.com/support/?questionID=3886

Please describe what is happening in SL when the mouse locks up and if it affects viewer 1.19.1.4.

Please attach your Second Life log and crash report and DirectX Diagnostic text file to the new issue.

thanks for the suggestions Ella, but this is a Mac viewer issue.
the graphics card/chip makers generally do not make drivers available directly to Mac users (nor for embedded/laptop chips either, tho there are ways around this), you have to get them via Mac's Software Updater, as & when Apple deem to update them (which sadly isn't often enough ).

Yes thank you sk8rat ... Beware said they had this issue on XP, which is why I suggested opening a new issue.

I understand Mac users have to wait for Apple updates and even when they come, 10.5.3, there seems to still be some problems, which even Apple recognise ie 10.5.4 under testing, wth a release date rumoured to be in the next 2 weeks.

For others with the same system as OP, MacBookPro4,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz - GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB - 4 GB RAM - Mac OS X 10.5.2, is this still an issue with the latest RC 1.20.10 ?

If it is, please attach your SecondLife log and crash report to this issue.

i can't speak for others, but my impression that this issue has evolved somewhat over the last 9 month, starting with Apple's "Leopard Graphics Update" & 10.5.2 (which seemed to at least allow the SL client to run (albeit barely) for MacBookPro3,1(8600M GT 256MB) users), then through these 10 RCs where avatar movement seems to be the main trigger for long pauses in UI response (audio still plays, etc). LL appear to be aware of this near-show-stopper in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7779.

how is RC10 going on your MBP4,1 ?

I have exactly the same problem with almost exactly the same hardwareBUT and this is Biiiiiiiig!!!!!!!!! when using Secondlife client in windows environment ON THE SAME HARDWARE no issues whatsoever. In fact performance is through the roof. I DO NOT have this problem with my power macG5 nor do I have it on my Intel iMac both using ATI graphics.
