Never, ever seen in previous releases up to 1.19.1(4)
Remember: viewer sometimes disappears from Windows, without the above or any other error msgs, immediately after log-in. It is then not seen in Windows Task list.
I'm getting the SmartHeap Library MEM_BAD_POINTER warning too, immediately after using ctrl-Q to quit.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2327 MHz) Been getting this too after exiting, never seen it before. MEM_BAD_POINTER.
Second Life 1.20.0 (84432) Apr 9 2008 03:59:09 (Second Life Release Candidate) You are at 260061.3, 231986.5, 346.4 in Blackmount located at sim2265.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.17.16:13005) CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (Unknown model) (3192 MHz) I just got the MEM_BAD_POINTER during logout, the last log entries before it were:
INFO: LLAppViewer::cleanup: Goodbye INFO: removeMarkerFile() INFO: LLThread::staticRun() Exiting: Error INFO: ll_cleanup_apr: Cleaning up APR Second Life 1.20.0 (84432) Apr 9 2008 03:59:09 (Second Life Release Candidate)
You are at 260333.9, 251793.8, 401.5 in Howelsen located at sim5869.agni.lindenlab.com (8.2.35.171:13005) CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (2992 MHz) Experiencing same error with the addion of Second Life Taskbar Button showing Not Responding. May or may not result in crash. Commenting as problem also pertains to Server as well as XP. I get exactly this error message nearly every time I log off. Today I crashed for the first time with the same error message suddenly without logging off. Maybe this helps a bit?
I added another screenshot : rel. cand. 1.20 (German) on WinXP
Occurs only after closing SL..but not always Second Life 1.20.0 (84432) Apr 9 2008 03:59:09 (Second Life Release Candidate)
You are at 264558.9, 238111.4, 601.2 in Yoonseul located at sim3173.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.20.162:13005) CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2999 MHz) Same thing, on exiting rc 1.20 I get the SmarHeap Library MEM_BAD_POINTER error. I have not seen this before rc 1.20 but this is also a new machine for me, and i went straight to rc 1.20 with it.
Second Life 1.20.0 (84432) Apr 9 2008 03:59:09 (Second Life Release Candidate) CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1997 MHz) I also have the newest Quicktime version, and I have the lastest SL main viewer installed but I have only used it once on this machine. I reopen this issue as I beg to differ. I checked the other issue, none of that appplies to this issue apart from the fact that it affects SmartHeap. It also has not appeared at all before version 1.20.
It is a completely different error message appearing at a different time, and at least I can assure you it hasn't anything to do with memory leaking. In my case, this happened after being in world for half an hour at my home sim, whose textures were already cached. There was no excessive memory use to be noted at all. A bad pointer referencing memory is different to a memory leak, right? Also, I didn't even crash-I just got an error message I could click away, no option to "retry" or anything as with the mem overflow errors. I also set its priority to major instead of critical-this does not seem to happen all the time and it does not impair everything.
Viewer disappears from Windows XP--similar to VWR-5797
I wonder if this isn't two completely different bugs then? I've never had it just disappear, I only got those weird messages.
Sorry, but I have to stick with Alyx : I don't have any of the problems mentioned in other issues. It's only when I manually close RC1.20 I get this error message pop-ups. AFAIK this relates to bad virtual swap memory adressing (see Bad_Mem_Pointer), but it doesn't help to increase or decrease this file manually. What I found out so far is that the error is caused by a conflict between the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update and SmartHeap.
If this is the case then this maybe helps : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;910466 I'm getting this too, every time I logout on version 1.20
OS Name Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium I get it on exit too, not every time i logout of the viewer though. (MEM_BAB_POINTER)
Second Life 1.20.1 (84760) Apr 15 2008 12:13:49 (Second Life Release Candidate) CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2009 MHz) I get the error shown on attached picture "2. sl1.20rc0--b.png".
It happens with the 1.20-RC AND with the 1-19-1-4 ProductionViewer. If i turn "Basic Shaders" off in preferences, no problem...with "Basic Shaders" on it crashes with this error 2 minutes after login. CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2211 MHz) If you're experiencing this issue on XP sp2, try disabling "Install Files for East Asian Languages"
Control Panel --> Regional and Language Options --> Languages Untick the "Install files for East Asian Languages" You may receive a "MEM_BAD_POINTER" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 SYMPTOMS CAUSE Full Article: I have "Install Files for East Asian Languages" unticked (and it has always been so) in both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1, but the SmartHeap problem persists (1.20 RC1), as well as the sudden disappearance of the viewer under XP without trace or error messages (this latter issue in XP only - 1.20 RC1). I have the latest NVIDIA drivers for the two machines.
Same here.
Latest RC: 1.20.xxxxx Beezle, thanks for the suggestion, but fix does not work for me. I get it too after using 1.20.xx, every time i log out. Not in 1.19.xx.
OS: Windows XP SP 2 I saw this today with the latest RC.
I get MEM_BAD_POINTER every time I log out using 1.20.2
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (2192 MHz) Same here, get the errors seen in the above screenshots whenever I crash OR log out normally
WinXP-Pro Sometimes I leave my SL on a long time when I go afk through the day. When that happens I eventually run into an out of memory condition and have to close SL and restart it and it's fine. I don't have to reboot Vista or anything like that, just kill SL and restart. When I exit I get an error like the one mentioned in this issue.
Second Life 1.20.3 (85643) Apr 22 2008 18:39:39 (Second Life Release Candidate) You are at 223054.0, 277283.3, 627.3 in Melioria located at sim2943.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.19.186:13004) CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2310 MHz) I'm getting these on exit too and on exit when the memory leak(s) force the program to exit. This is still happening with 1.20 RC 4.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1891 MHz) I am now getting this error consistently on exit. Downloaded the new Viewer 1.20.5.86279 and the problem still exists
I am having a similar issue with SmartHeap Library. Every time I log in, within 5 minutes I receive this message "Out of memory, please free some, then choose retry." I have updated my graphics driver, cleared my cashe both inworld and on my computer and have defraged my computer. I hope this helps in clearing up this issue
Yep, just had the mem_bad_pointer on exiting again. Specs see above.
I get this error right after log out too.
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (Unknown model) (2793 MHz) This is happen to me in all the RC
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2135 MHz) I am having the same problem
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (Unknown model) (3192 MHz) Same problem - crash city & mem pointer error
Second Life 1.20.5 (86279) Apr 30 2008 00:22:51 (Second Life Release Candidate) CPU: Intel Core Series Processor (1729 MHz) This should be fixed in the 1.20 Release (currently in RC6 status at the time of this comment.)
@ Ramzi Linden – it's not fixed in 1.20.6... am seeing this virtually everytime I try to log off (though not every time). Also it's happening virtually everytime the massive memory leakage crashes the RC, usually somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd hour of login (so for me it's not a showstopper, just an inconvenience (and something that makes SL far less than optimal as it gobbles up resources and fails to let go of those it no longer needs).
I thought briefly that it was somehow related to video drivers, but after installing the latest nVIDIA drivers available, while the crash of video drivers that sometimes went with it did go away, the C++ library SmartHeap Lib failures did not. I am Reopening this issue because it still exists in 1.20.15
I get BAD POINTER messages every day and when i click cancel or OK it restarts my PC. Very annoying This does not happen only on exit. It will just pop up out of nowhere. this has been going on Since 1.20.14 Second Life 1.20.15 (92456) Jul 18 2008 10:58:42 (Second Life Release) CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2210 MHz) Using 1.20.15 and got this error for the first time today. Caused me to crash almost immediately. Also had a texture turn to random colored dots.
Before it happened I had taken pictures, adjusted graphics settings, and changed antialiasing from 2x to 4x to 0. Haven't logged back in yet to see if texture becomes normal again. I don't have a big memory, but there weren't any complicated scripts running, other avatars around, large number of textures, or other problems. Could move freely, create & edit, fly, etc. I was in the Burning Life Network sim. Have spent a lot of time there and lot of time using 1.20.15 without any problems (other than a bit of lag, but nothing major). memory 512 Yes, I know I'm not supported (all over the place). I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to provide useful information on the issue. SMART HEAP LIBRARY ...OUT OF MEMORY ... PLEASE FREE UP SOME MEMORY AND RETRY. I am also getting this error message on the latest viewer. I have a Acer Desktop Media Center , 4 GR, AMD Quad Core, 32 bit, NVIDEA 8600, OS-VISTA. Al drivers are up to date. NEWEST viewer...PLEASE HELP.. I have had this error message more than a half dozen times in the last couple days .. : ((((((
