To any Linden devs working on this ...

Please don't think that I have a problem with your work because I'm raising lots of issues on this! It's because I think the joystick support is a great move and and an important step forward [puns (almost) unintended] that I'm paying it so much attention

Domchi Underwood added a comment - 16/Apr/08 11:32 AM
Yes, I fully agree with Aimee - I could live without any of the upgrades / fixes to the viewer in the last year or so, but there I two things I'd die if you took them away - SpaceNavigator and Windlight, in that order.

Patch posted on VWR-6432 to allow joystick control of vehicles.

Space Navigator I swear is the killer hardware for virtual worlds. Nothing has made me more happy than using it in Second Life. So keep the fixes coming

Torley Linden added a comment - 23/Apr/08 03:20 PM
That's a lot of issues! Thanks for reporting and linking them together, we need to take a closer look at this.

Pamela Emmons added a comment - 01/May/08 12:25 PM
Oh please please please fix the flickering 'near and local lights' problem when flycam is enabled.

I am so close to doing some very neat video stuff. When you disable near and local lights, the scene goes flat and people's faces go dark.

I agree with Hypatia. Using the SpaceNavigator makes the whole second life experience more fluid.

Pamela Emmons added a comment - 01/May/08 12:32 PM
Please see my attached video file spacenav.wmv which demonstrates near and local lights flickering with flycam.

Aimee Trescothick added a comment - 01/May/08 01:53 PM
Agreed, but the meta-issue is not the place to attach it.

Erm, how are VWR-6848 and VWR-6740 duplicates of the meta-issue? Scratches head

Domchi Underwood added a comment - 23/May/08 09:51 AM
Clearly some sort of mistake... I'm removing duplicate links since original issues are not closed. Alexa Linden, can you please see what you wanted to do with VWR-6848 and VWR-6740?

Thanks - just got IM'd about this. I have closed mine, and am importing this one

I just want to second Aimee and Domchi's kudos for putting 3D Nav support into Second Life. I've been using joystick flycam since January, and it's the awesomest. The new support is making it much more friendly to use.

I'm voting for this meta-issue only to hope more focus is made on fixing the rough edges and especially on getting patches provided incorporated before general release. Thanks again, Lindens.

Domchi Underwood added a comment - 16/Jul/08 02:48 AM
By the way, there are two SN issues I'd like to mention which are very important to fix before final release - VWR-6350 (Flycam text) and VWR-5791 (flickering local lights).

Without those two issues fixed, machinima is impossible with SN, and SN is made for machinima. And I'm saying this as somebody who doesn't do machinima.

Osprey Therian added a comment - 16/Jul/08 10:07 AM
Not impossible - just harder to use. As Vlad pointed out the lights don't seem to flicker when one is not wearing a HUD. The text issue is a bad one, and so far I've mostly just filmed in the ordinary viewer, but if the RC goes live and there's no choice I suppose I'll just have to cut that part off.

/me prays.

Domchi Underwood added a comment - 16/Jul/08 10:35 AM
Okay - almost impossible. There is also hex editor hack where you can replace Flycam text with blanks in .exe file... which is a bit better than cropping video.

But of all the above issues, those two are most likely to produce a lot of frustration.

VWR-7775 was closed as being related to this particular issue. With the latest release candidate, my joystick has developed an extremely annoying upward drift. Makes it impossible to build with it.

I tried installing the drivers but they make the joystick impossible for me to use in second life. Rotating the view doesn't work, and moving foward/backwards and up/down are reversed. Nothing I do with the settings seems to resolve that.

I checked the joystick setup in SL preferences, and they're not showing any activity on any axis.

Is there any help available for setting this up or calibrating it?

FWIW, I'm using Mac OS 10.5.4.

This gets my vote. Please fix this problem with the local lights. As soon as I enter Flycam, half my lighting goes out or flickers. The Space Navigator is great in SL. I spend most of my SL time in Flycam now.

Thank you Aimee

I've filed a separate meta issue (VWR-8465) which will house all of the issues with patches attached, leaving this one for issues where a patch is needed.
