I have MacBook Pro 2.5Ghz 512MB VRAM machine very similar to Radar Masukami's machine.
The period between which the freezes happen seem to vary, though anecdotally seems to happen more quickly when chatting. I've determined that the machine itself is still responsive..... I can switch to another application and it will operate without problem. I just noted that there is a fix pending..... I don't know when that or some other remedy will be available - BUT, for those effected this is a MAJOR snag.... makes it basically impossible to have interactions, games or combat.... I really hope the fix will be released soon.... totally killing me.... Thanks.... Given the fact that SL was nearly unusable from my MacBook Pro I took the plunge and installed 10.5.3.
I was pleasantly surprised to find significant improvement on the issue. It is not entirely solved.... still get periodic "stalls" or freezes.... but rather than 20 - 30 seconds they are 2 - 3 and much less often... Would love to have a 100% solution, but at least I can use the machine for SL now... hopefully a future revision will completely solve the issue. Thanks... I have a 2.2 GHz w/128 VRAM and 8600GT chipset. Running 10.5.3. My experience is very variable running both 1.19.1.4 and 1.20 RC3 (I usually run the later).
I can sometimes go for an hour without a lag if I am in a low to moderate animation and avatar environment. Especially just chatting with a group. But other times I will have a lag or even a lock up in the same sim. Usually it is a 20-30 sec lag, less often (but usually at least once a session) it is a slowing that affects my whole system such that it may take several minutes to get a force quit implemented. Once I force quit the computer behaves fine. I have tried the Nicholaz mods and other suggested modifications to the graphics settings with little success. I am using the OpenGL fix pretty regularly now and it seems to be helping but not fixing the problem. I still have lags and lockups but less often. I find I can visit animation rich sims like Inspire Space Park and last a while. I still cannot keep video and streaming live music going for long. I guess it goes without saying that this is influenced by the number of open apps and other operations underway. However, it is not always correlated. I can have only SL running and have the same problem. Anxious for a real fix from Apple or Linden. Sorry, got the versions of SL wrong in the last post. That should be 1.20RC10. Thanks.
its even still unassigned, are Mac users so unimportant to Linden Labs ?
I have noticed that the single most impacting parameter on this is the view distance. I can minimize the frequency of this problem by setting my draw distance to 64 meters.... which sucks.... but, is better than the alternative which are hangs that really destroy my ability to enjoy and experience Second Life.
I've found the same problem is continuing with the release candidate, but I've not had time to test and report thoroughly.... If you are experiencing this problem... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE try the release candidate and REPORT! For users effected by this problem it is a CRITICAL problem. Thanks, Smallhands I have recently switched to the OnRez viewer and have had only very rare crashes, perhaps two in 20 hours logged. Those crashes did not occur in graphics rich environments as was characteristic of the crashes I was having with the SL viewers. I should say that I am not doing any significant building or anything more than interacting with the environment and other avs. Also, the graphics representations in the OnRez viewer are not as rich as the sl viewers but, hey, to be able to go through a whole evening inworld without a crash is worth a lot of lost features.
