Being able to click on the drop down on the map is a simple one step process. The new version makes you open the profile of everyone individually. Totally unusable if you have 10+ friends online at one time and you want to see where they are.
i'd like ot see this come back too... i lvoe being abel to jsut use the map for stuff liek that, i always use the map to tp....
I agree, the map was much easier to use. And if the reason for removing it was to avoid confusion, I think it's actually going to cause a lot more confusion for a lot of people who aren't aware of any other way to do it.
And anyway, this wouldn't remove the confusion of why the Find on Map button is enabled on some friend's profiles and not others, so it should just be explained better, if it's really an issue at all. When reading over the patch notes, this is one of the biggest problems I saw with the new viewer, aside from the blindingly bright interface (especially in comparison to the more realistically lit world we have now).
I don't think putting checkboxes next to every friend that has given you map rights is an effective solution, either. Sometimes it's nice to be able to change permissions like that without the person constantly being notified. This old behavior wasn't a bit broken, and I can't even seem to find a JIRA supporting the removal of this feature. What exactly was "fixed" or enhanced by this change? Just above the buttons such as "Teleport" and "Show Destination" on the map is an unused space, so it's not like we gained any more room on our interface. I hope you will enable this feature once again. Most of my friends allow me to see their location. When online of course having to click Contacts, There name, Profile, Find on map. Is very very frustrating. Please restore this much missed functionality
Please restore this feature. If you need to explain how something works, I suggest adding a little questionmark button next to it like you did above Partner in the profile window.

When does lack of information of a feature consitute it as being broken? That's odd, don'tcha think? I believe that you should just keep it in. Furthermore, just put the information in as one of those help bubbles. Problem solved; lots less angry residents.
One of my MOST OFTEN used features of SL. That "work around" as a replacement for the drop list is (pardon my rudeness) completely rediculous.
Please PLEASE put it back! Farallon, I think the word you are looking for to describe that "work around" is "shit"
I too am pissed off that this feature was removed >.<

If you take it off the map, PUT IT BACK SOMEWHERE ELSE!
Why did you remove this? It was functional and had a purpose. Most people understood how it works. Yes I understand that you changed the way it works but THE WAY IT PREVIOUSLY WORKED, WAS DONE RIGHT!!!!!
PUT IT BACK!! Being the one to whom Bridie's comment was directed, I'll add a vote but also suggest a comprimise. Instead of having it just in the profile window, put a "find on map" button in the main contact list tab. Having to open profiles to perform a task with someone I have on my contact list is a personal annoyance of mine - it's an extra step, basicly.
Personally I like the idea of the old functionality with a small info "i" as with partner. Rather than to use this very very good functionality.
I hope to see it restored as soon as possible. It would never have occurred to me that the friends drop down would cause any confusion. In this case, as much as I hate to say it, I would suggest that there will always be some who are confused by things that most pick up on without a thought. Removing such features hardly seems the appropriate way to reduce this confusion. As others have suggested, adding a help icon, with brief explanation would be a far better way of dealing with it.
Most use this feature without issue. It does not make sense to remove this commonly used feature because a minority did not understand that it only shows those friends who have given you mapping permissions. I agree; this was the only way to figure out which of your online friends are mappable without going through them one at a time. (how about adding THAT indicator to the friendslist: mappable)
Also, I must say I rather dislike the mentality of "if people don't get it, throw it out". If the problem is that some users don't "get it", consider changing the name of the feature slightly to reflect that it is "Find Visible Friends on List". Taking away the feature is just wrong.
I have about four people who let me check where they are on the map. I do so regularly with only one of them. BUT... I do check that one person about a dozen times every time we're on at the same time, because we explore together. It's gone from click, pulldown, click, to click, click, click, swear, click, click, click, FINALLY it works. Never seems to happen on the first try. I honestly don't care WHERE 90% of the people on my Friend list are... if I want them, I'll ask them. But for the person I'm exploring with, I NEED that feature and use it all the time.
Yes this is ridiculous not point for removing it bring it back please.
I'll have to resort to going back to the old viewer and hope this gets sorted out!!!! I use this feature all the time, and I was shocked to see that it was removed in the new RC viewer. I don't buy the argument that it should be removed because it is confusing. If that is the case, then include hover text over the drop-down to explain that it only includes friends who will let you see their positions. I think it is silly to have to bring up someone's profile in order to find them.

IMHO this is far too useful to remove just because it was causing support calls.
Hopefully this comes under the heading of "we thought we'd try removing it from the RC to see if anyone misses it". If that's the case then fair enough that's part of what doing RCs is all about, but it would help your PR an awful lot if you actually said that was why you were doing it. We do use it, all the time, please put it back, the workaround is cumbersome and impractical.
Bridie: "— which was usually a very small subset of your entire friends list" That's the whole point, it's a filtered version of your friends list presenting the ones you often need to get to during your every day work flow, allowing you to travel between them with a minimum of clicks. I understand it is confusing for new users, the desire to make the learning curve less steep, and to reduce the number of support requests you get saying "Why can't I see all my friends in the list?", but this is not the way to go about it. The proper approach is to provide a staged user interface that will grow as the user learns and gradually turns on more features. Hopefully this is where the work on the Skinning project (https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Skinning please put this back, it worked perfectly if it caused confusion put one of them little i buttons next to it
I just want to also say, please put it back. The friends who are willing to be mapped are mostly the closest friends and being able to see what they're up to at a glance is tremendously useful. I can also see this being valuable to someone using it to track employees or clients. It also helps if one person is following another while working or exploring.
I also agree that adding a help icon should fix any confusion. "Friends who have given you permission to map them" is all that is needed. This is a greatly missed feature for me. It allowed me to see at a glance who's both online and I could hang out with. Having to guess who on your friends list has mapping enabled and then going through their profile is infinitely more inconvenient.

I use that drop down all the time, especially when following people around SL, please, please bring it back.
Having to go via the AVs Profile is time consuming and, as Profiles are now being turned off during high load times, unreliable. I was infuriated by this change within seconds of my first login with the new client. This is a feature I and my circle of friends use extensively, and now it has been removed!!!
I can no longer quickly see where my closest friends are and what they're doing without tediously going to their profile - time consuming for even one individual, but I often check the locations of ten or more people! PLEASE put this feature back in! Without it, I can't find my friends easily! In looking at it, I can see how a new (or even current) user would be confused by this. Might I recommend instead of "My friends" change it to "Mapped friends" or "Mappable friends" instead? It's not a feature I ever really use, but if we keep it, we should at least make it accurate.
Using the dropdown was way faster and more intuitive than having to open the friends list. Removing that feature is not a good idea. Put it back please.

Pretty much agree with everything said above. Please put this feature back.
Add my voice to those above. Please revert this change. The reasons given for it are absurd.
I have to wonder who those "confused" people were and how many thousands complained so that LL removed friends mapping? It sure would help to get other things solved/removed/fixed....I have never heard anyone complain about it or being confused about it.
Was this some lame attempt to reduce load on the persistence servers?
If querying agent location is too load intensive, let's just be up front and remove the entire system instead of burying the functionality deeper into the client and hope people won't use it. I use the friends-on-map function to frequently locate my friends and see what they were up to. The code was already written and could at least be moved elsewhere if it's too visible for n00bs. I've never heard of a company slicing a useful feature because it was "too confusing." They usually only remove broken ones, or ones they find too costly to support... I'm also one of those who use this freature a lot.
And i vote also for bringing it back in. And to state it clear: i'm sure that a few tousand more residents complain about it being removed.. and i honestly doub that the count of people who get confused by this are 100 or more. So like Peter Lameth allready statet: solve it with a information button who says what it does. Instead of getting rid of one of the most used freatures in SL. (and honestly that freature is at last for me more importend then the WindLight freatures or the new build high) I used(d) this feature a lot to quickly find my friends .. I agree with the comments .. keep the feature and document it better
It's such a useful feature that maybe it should replace the release key button that everyone has been screaming about to get removed. Then it would be so much easier to find your friends as it is always available on the main screen (unless of course you've edited the release key out) . Please bring this feature back.
I agree wholeheartedly, i don't see how there could be any confusion over that, and i think it's a cop out excuse.
It should absolutely stay, ABSOLUTELY!!! How about an option that lets you enable it if you want it?

Look for the return of Friends dropdown on the map in the next 1.20 RC.
