Textures get overlaid with flickery red textures. Not in "highlight invisibles" - this is in addition to that.

Ah - turned out I'd hit cmd-N trying to create a new notecard (cmd-N in any Apple app that conforms to the UI guidelines creates a new document) and accidentally enabled "Beacons Always On". Nobody I asked knew what was up, even when I showed them the pics, until Phooka Heron told me. Isn't this an operation which either needs making more publically known, or better yet, burying in the UI away from commonly used OSX shortcuts? It's one of the least useful options, linked to one of the most commonly used keypresses in OSX.
