 Description  « Hide
Concerning: lost of a hud with a content of more then 20 000LD...due to attaching a new hud.

Dear reader,
On 3rd april 2008 between 1.30 and 2.00 PM I lost my hud with all my content in it. The content is worth more then 20 000LD. This happened when I was visiting a LM called 'Greenies Home' (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Greenies%20Home%20Rezzable/230/75/32). When I came there a blue pop up appeared that it is advised to set the graphics draw to a min of 300 so I did that. I wanted to race there so I took the free hud they were giving there. I clicked on 'wear'. The next thing that happened is that I saw my EZ Animator disappear from my screen. First I thought that nothing was wrong because the race hud took the place of the EZ animator. I thought my EZ animator went back to my inventory as it supposed to do. This is what I saw in the chat....everything normal:
[2008/04/03 13:16] EZ Animator: 16% memory free in ZHAO
[2008/04/03 13:41] Object owned by Ordinal Malaprop gave you '[rezzable] Race HUD v0.2 @racing' ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Greenies%20Home%20Rezzable/236/76/31 ).
[2008/04/03 13:41] [rezzable] Race HUD v0.2 @racing: race HUD ready
[2008/04/03 13:49] Teleport completed from http://slurl.com/secondlife/Greenies%20Home%20Rezzable/230/75/32
Anyway I did not race finally seeing that the racing boards were expensive. So I detached the racing hud and wanted to put on my EZ animator, which I could not find in my inventory anymore! I searched under every possible name but the only thing I found was the copyable version of my EZ....the empty one. That was not the right one. The one which I lost was non copy because all my dances and anims in it were non copy. I cleared my cache, relogged...hoping it will appear in my lost and founds, but unfortunately I received nothing back. I even checked my recent objects in my inventory to see if it were attached to another object or something but that was not the case. I went home and rezzed the race hud to see if my EZ animator got attached to that but even THAT was not the case. I want to make clear that I have not rezzed ANYTHING during the 1.30 and 2 hour of linden tests! I checked the tips on the 'track issue' and followed all the steps but nothing helped.
I already IM'd the creator of the hud how in the hell this can be possible that due to detaching an object you can loose it. The only thing she said was, that it is a new sl bug and that there is no solution for it. She has had more ppl having the same issue lately....
How can I solve this now?

Sincerely,
Adonaira Aabye

( NB. The disappearing of my item happened under the version before 1.19.1.4 but I don't know which version that was. After I discovered the pb and cleared cash without any effect, I updated sl to 1.19.1.4.and 5th April I followed all the steps on 'track issue'. The specific steps are written in the attachment.)

Why is this support taking this long?! I have lost items worth 22000LD due to the linden updates!! I need to know how I can get my lost object back and I need to have my account history of 2007/2008!

Webby Merlin added a comment - 18/Apr/08 11:36 AM
This is more than a "support" issue.. this is a program bug. When you wear a HUD with NO COPY animations in it like the Huddles EZ Animator Deluxe 1.3 - you stand to lose it all. I had the same experience with about 4k worth of NO COPY dance animations working in MY OWN SIM:

The HUD was attached to TOP LEFT (Default for that product) - and when another HUD was attached that also set to use the TOP LEFT location, the first HUD was NOT returned to inventory, but treated as a "TEMP" object and completely deleted, along with all the NO COPY animations. If you detatch it first, it goes to inventory ok, and you can wear it later. The HUD itself IS copy.. so before you put any animations in it you can test it.. replace it.. reattach it just fine, giving you that confidence level of putting your NO COPY anims in it (it suggests One By One so you don't lose them.)

So then you want to wear another HUD and if it happens to go to TOP LEFT where your Huddles is, you lose it all.

Clearly you'd have a lot more people screaming about this if they could figure out how the heck they lost all their animations, what the pattern is, where they were, what version they happened to be using at the time, which rollout etc., but customer support sending us all to go look for objects in floors and walls, Coalesced objects, etc. as described on that support page, well you can't find what is not there.

If there is a way to restore inventory AT ALL I'd like to know about it.. I would like to say that the Huddles product is SUPER and does everything i want it to do, the dances i put into it worked great together, I was SO HAPPY to have it.. for about two days.

This is not a support issue.. read comments above.

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 18/Apr/08 08:27 PM
I agree, there is much more to this than a simple support issue. There is a new bug here, and it's a very, very bad one. I have thousands of customers and help people every day with their HUDs. I never heard of this bug a few weeks ago. But over the past 3 weeks, I've had 1-3 reports a day which are variations on this. The particulars vary, but the consistent thread is that attachments are being lost when they are detached (often when they are replaced as Webby suggests).

I repeat this is a new problem (or perhaps an old once that has been exacerbated in the last few weeks), but it is a specific bug, not just a general complaint about inventory loss.

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 18/Apr/08 08:28 PM
I also think this should be marked as a duplicate of VWR-6229 instead, since that one has more votes and more comments. Although Webby's comments should be moved over there.

fausttiger forte added a comment - 18/Apr/08 09:59 PM
well... if Webby is correct... that a Left HUD position being replaced by another is causing the issue... I haven't seen it, however... my Huddles Default position was moved to the Right top Corner.... and no other HUDs are placed there.... being on the left.

So it Webby is correct, while not fixing the problem, would moving your HUD default position fix the problem for now, making sure it doesn't conflict with another HUD.

I will note I haven' been on as much lately, so if it's a really new new problem, than I may not have experienced it.

Two more reports this morning of this.

sherrylady Jewell has lost her animation HUD twice. "I know the reason i think that i lost my huddles. I attached two items on the same corner. One mystitool and one huddles!"

Blu Bristol lost a HUD on 3/31 from this.

And faust this seems to be a broader problem than Webby's method. Sometimes it just happens when someone detaches their HUD too. I think this sometimes happens when someone "Wears" an object from the ground and then that object is replaced by something else.

Also, I blogged about this here: http://imakehuddles.com/wordpress/2008/04/19/if-you-lose-inventory-make-sure-you-get-support-from-linden-lab/

This (told to me by a Linden support person) is relevant to this bug: "I''ve been able to fix that issue a few times with a"fix" i can do rather quickly. I've seen it creeping up a lot lately. Not sure why it's happening, but i suspect it could be any number of things.. from which viewer they are using, to issues with the servers, to acts of bored dieties"

blu bristol added a comment - 19/Apr/08 09:04 PM
Hi, yes I lost my HUDDLES hud with animations worth thousands of lindens when I detached it. I didn't replace it with another item worn on the same location, all I did was detach. I have been on SL for over a year and have never had something like this happen before. What happened to me was that I hit the "release keys" button - which normally detaches all huds. I have used this button before with NO problems - the HUDDLES would always detach normally but still stay in my inventory.

However, on this night, when I hit the release keys button, the HUDDLES not only detached, but also disappeared from my inventory the second it happened. I had my inventory window open and saw the whole thing. You know how when you're wearing a hud (or any item) the item becomes bold texted? Well when I hit the release keys button, my other huds (like the Mysti-tool) detached like normal and became un-bold. However, the HUDDLES just disappeared. One second it was there, the next it was gone.

When I saw that happen - I immediately started looking for it. I didn't delete it, I didn't rename it, I didn't drop it or rezz it in the sim. (I even used a script scanner to search the sim for the HUDDLES just in case, but it wasn't there). All I did was hit the release keys button. I searched folders (trash, lost & found). I looked under the recent items tab too. Other copies of the HUDDLES were still there (copies that didn't have my animations in them, they were "empty" copies) Then I tried relogging, I cleared my cache multiple times and let my inventory reload. I went to different regions, I cleared my cache and still nothing. I even tried logging in with different viewers (windlight) so it could reload my inventory. I also tried logging onto the beta grid and let my inventory be downloaded again there. Every other item was the there except that ONE copy of the HUDDLES with my animations. It's the only thing that is STILL missing.

This was a few days before SL had it's major crash and was offline for a long time. (I lost it on March 31st) I figured SL was acting up and a server just ate it or something. But after hearing that I"m not the only one experiencing the problem, that other people also have lost their huds after trying to detach (AND that someone was able to get their hud back) I'm hoping that a solution can be found. I've lost my dances, my ao, animations etc. I will basically have to buy the same animations again - but now I'm worried about losing them again. I hope that the Lindens will look into this and someone can find a solution to this. Otherwise I'm out thousands of lindens, along with everyone else who has lost their huds too.

Djinn Freenote added a comment - 19/Apr/08 09:29 PM
I had a similar experience to those above. While wearing my HUDDLES (which only had a couple no-copy anims in it) I accidentally dragged a folder to my avatar, replacing all of my current clothing/attachments/etc. with those in the folder. This removed my HUDDLES device which was attached to the top-left corner of my HUD. It did not revert to my inventory or drop on the ground near me.

Later after rebuilding the HUDDLES and replacing the no-copy anims, I accidentally hit the "release keys" button. This removed the HUDDLES from my hud and again bypassed the inventory, sending it off into nowhere.

Currently I have rebuilt it again, making sure to include only copyable anims inside it. It has lasted fine since then, but I have been reluctant to test it to see if it disappears again.

I want to react on Alexa.....if you took the time to read the attachement in this ticket, weher I explained all in details, you would have seen I have done everything already to retrieve the lost item. So all those LINDEN-tricks did not help.

More reports today: "Stingray Darkstone: (Saved Sat Apr 19 16:45:26 2008) Hello Keiki, I am contacting you looking for assistance with HUDDLES EZ Animator Deluxe v1.2.0 due to the object itself keeps disappearing from my inventory. About a week ago I could not find my Huddles v1.2.0 in my inventory which contained about 40 dances I bought at Sine Wave and other NO-COPY items contained within it. I estimate it was over 20,000L worth of stuff lost. I wrote it off as an SL hiccup with their inventory system, even though for the past 5 months of using the product I never had this problem before. So I started to re-purchase dances, about 12-15 of them, and load them into another HUDDLES v1.2.0 only to find this is now missing from my inventory as well today."

Also a report from Isis Owatatsumi

I was at a RP sim with some friends, I attached the RP hud - and it attached too the same spot as my HUDDLES! I didnt think anything of it, as I often did this!
UNTIL I tried too put my HUDDLES back on ... too find it had gone!
I opened every box, looked everywhere in my INVENTORY! It had gone!
I have not only lost apx 400 NO COPY Animations
But I have also lost APX $50 (USD)
Maybe more!
LL Wont help because we are 'basic' members!
WTF is that all about?
Everyone playing SL should have the same right too get help as the next person? Right?
Anyway - I have lost EVERYTHING! And I am really angry that LL wont help!

Same problem here, have lost 2 AO HUDs recently. The first time I lost a handful of no-copy anims. Luckily, the second time everything was copiable (so I had a backup), but it did occur after I made a change to the contents (added an anim and a configuration card). Then it went poof when I replaced it with another HUD.

Zorin Frobozz added a comment - 23/Apr/08 05:22 PM
There's two issues I see here.

A) Greedy vendors who won't replace stuff lost due to database loss. HELP YOUR CUSTOMERS, darnit. They are your bread and butter; don't just bend them over the bed and *@%( them when they lose stuff they bought from and force them to buy it again. You have a record of the sale, just GIVE THEM ANOTHER ONE.

B) There should be a bit you can set on any object which allows the owner to do a one time conversion from NO COPY / TRANSFER to COPY / NO TRANSFER. This will allow people to buy stuff for others as gifts, but let the final customer convert it to COPY / NO TRANSFER so they can back it up. And vendors should USE this bit.

There will ALWAYS be database glitches that cause inventory loss. We need to find a way to let people back up their content so that they are less likely to lose what they paid real money for.

daisy overlord added a comment - 25/Apr/08 01:59 AM
As for the last comment- those are good points, of course- though this was not a case of failed vendors and inventory transfer, and really not the fault nor responsibility of businesses in-world. I have yet to come across a business owner who isn't happy to assist a customer when grid hiccups cause interruptions to deliveries. In this case I certainly wouldn't have expected any support from the vendor though, as it's clearly some kind of bug that happened within my own inventory, and the lost items were purchased so long ago that I wouldn't expect even the most meticulous of business owners to have a record of my purchase.

I definitely agree that a backup option would be absolutely excellent, if possible.

Also, I have to mention that I got my HUDs back (in Lost and Found) today, whether it was a spontaneous miracle or due to the support ticket I had in, I don't know. No one closed my ticket or told me what happened, I just found the HUDs sitting there, totally intact. There is hope!

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 26/Apr/08 04:50 AM
Zorin, this is about a bug that affects inventory and needs to be fixed. Your comments are a little offtopic. Most of the people here are my customers and I do replace their HUDs whenever they are lost and reported to me. I've also found that most animators will work with people who have lost their animations. In any case, lets keep focused on the fact that there is a new and rather alarming bug that makes inventory go poof when you detach something.

Remember when things would disappear when they failed to rez? That was a bug that needed to be fixed, was reported and eventually fixed.

Remember when things would remain ghosted in world when you tried to take them and were effectively lost? That was a bug that needed to fixed, was reported and eventually fixed.

Webby Merlin added a comment - 26/Apr/08 12:14 PM
Thank you Daisy Overlord for contacting me inworld to say your HUD miraculously came home. She said she found them when she logged in using the latest RC and i was ever hopeful.... I jumped right out and went to upgraded the RC .. came in and dashed off to my Lost and Found, hoping beyond hope that they would be there... Mine are still AWOL. I appreciate so much the comments from everyone above experincing this bizarre phenomenon - and your efforts to get some Linden love on it and get this bug fixed. Be sure to vote for this issue and tell everyone you know that dances to come vote for it as well!

Andrea Zobel added a comment - 26/Apr/08 11:37 PM
I am having the same problem. I have cleared cache, reinstalled SL, updated to the new release candidate, even tried opening my inventory in the beta viewer...none of which brought my huddles back. I lost about 20 sine waves dances, my AO, and other animations as well. Mine happened the same way, replacing my outfit on accident and the huddles disappeared. If anyone finds a way to make it return, please let me know as I'm very sad

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 27/Apr/08 10:45 AM
Andrea, many people have gotten their HUDs back but you need to contact Linden Lab support directly. Use live chat, that seems to get a faster response. They will send you a form response if you file a ticket. If you are Basic member, I strongly suggest you think about going premium so that you can get support to help you with this. There is more info on my blog here: http://imakehuddles.com/wordpress/

Phoenixa Sol added a comment - 27/Apr/08 10:45 PM
Well, thanks to this bug, all my brand new sine wave dances i bought today from the April 08 release, will darn well sit in the folder instead of my usual routine of installing one set into a dance sphere with almost all my dances, and the other set into my HUDDLES quick pose huds. I flat out REFUSE to risk any part of my vast collection of dances and would hope this issue is resolved soon. My empathy to those who have lost inventory with this issue, and I'm doing what I can to spread the word about it.

Andrea Zobel added a comment - 29/Apr/08 08:17 AM
Well Keiki, you seem to be correct. I joined premium, and within 10 minutes had my HUD back via Live Chat Much cheaper than paying for all the animations I had lost. I still believe this to be an awful bug though, and am still spreading the word. Thank you though.

katastrafee darkstone added a comment - 29/Apr/08 11:17 AM
I have also lost my huddles.. attatching a Hybrid Hud for my tail and ears.. at least 10K in dances. I ended up purchasing a new huddles but have 3 or 4 dances in it now only compared to the ton i had before. It's very upsetting that you work so hard for something and it can just be gone in seconds.

Torrid Luna added a comment - 29/Apr/08 07:21 PM
I didn't know that this is a known bug, until right now, it happened for the second time to me. I lost my HUDDLES with about 50 animations, 20 dances from Sine Wave and others, and a very valuable configuration. This is a bug that destroys several thousands of Linden $ with one mouseclick, I cannot understand that this isn't made public on the blog!

Kuroyanagi Habsburg added a comment - 30/Apr/08 09:05 AM
I've had this version of inventory loss happen to me both in the past and recently. I'd like to report that it's not simply the HUDDLES hud that's being lost with this inventory problem. I've got a Zhao II variation from Semotion which has some no copy add-on scripts. I dump in animations from other vendors and customized notecards. When I added a different HUD attachment, it replaced it and it dissapeared. This has happened three times already. Luckily, all of the animations are copy and I can just dump a folder into a freshly unboxed version of the item and I'm not going to bother submitting a ticket for it. It's just a pain in the ass.

I wish we could lock attachments.

It's happened to me in the past with loosing dance chimera's with animations from another sort of inventory looss bug (created a new folder and the new folder dissapeared) and I've not had any luck getting the items returned with support tickets to LL. I just do things the old-fashioned way now. Open animation > play in world.

Dana DeVaux added a comment - 30/Apr/08 09:16 PM
I am too very dissapointed. Everything that has been posted to this bug is spot on. I have no copy dances in there. I am distraught because all i did was 'detach' it and I have always worn it on the bottom right. AND I put another Huddles, the most current version of Huddles deluxe (both the higer end one) and it dissapeared today too!!! Again, attached to HUD on bottom right. I plan to send a ticket because i have a lot of money in Keiki's product. I have a TON of sine wave dances and sounds that were not copiable. Thanks guys. Godspeed on fixing this one. I had reverted back to the old chimmy I had, and those by no conicidence have all copiable dances in them.

Mitzy Shino added a comment - 01/May/08 12:01 PM
Just had it happen to me with my HUDDLES, I hit that stupid most hated button in all of SL "release keys" by accident and my huddles detached and BOOM its gone.

Now having a discussion with a Linden about running the fix inventory thing, but its not going well.

They just keep telling me to do the normal things, no idea how to run the "fix inventory" thing another Linden told Keiki about, complained that no one currently working knows anything about it and that "a linden" should of put out a notice.

But you know what Lindens? I DON'T CARE if your internal communications is crap, or your staff don't know how to do something. What I DO CARE about is the fact that I'm out thousands of L$ because of some stupid bug, and you guys just shrug it off, "do the standard things".

Maybe there should be a JIRA to take a small percentage of LL's income every time something goes missing because of bugs like this, then I bet LL and YOU would care.

Thanks a bunch.

Marked Priority Level as 'Critical' because the 'Priority Levels' second of the Local Help page lists 'content loss' as a 'Critical' issue.

New hope dance recovery! I dont know how long it will stay attached.. but i have my Huddles EZ Animator Deluxe restored WITH DANCES. Here's what i did..

First thing i did was to submit a ticket... Second thing was to come here and leave the above message and reopen the issue passed off as "user error". TWO WEEKS after the first ticket was submitted.. i submitted a second one...and after no response in 4 days from that either, I followed the advice above about trying the LIVE CHAT option. I hooked up with someone who happened to know what i was talking about.. referred him/her to this page and the previous tickets...

Izzy Linden (M or F? i forgot to ask!) told me how to "DEEP CLEAR" my cache, told me which files and where to delete on my machine, then he/she ran some sort of "magic procedure' that took about an HOUR while i was to wait OFFLINE.. She IM'd me the "please login now" and i came in and checked inventory.. and there was a Huddles with perms as No Copy.. which of course it would have to be with my Sine Wave dances in there. I opened it.. and there they were!! I immediately started dancing

He/She mentioned to me that the developers are aware of this thread and the problem and are working on a fix for it. I suggested that she come to this thread and contact and run this magic procedure for everyone listed here.. but the recommendation is still for individuals to "submit a ticket."

Meanwhile.. i'll just keep Huddles attached and in view, not add any more dances to it cause you have to detach it to do that.. and keep "watching" this thread for a Linden to say.. WE FIXED IT!

Good luck everyone!

Oh, P.S. the LIVE CHAT option didnt work for my IE.. and i keep it updated pretty current.. but it DID WORK in a FIREFOX browser.

Thank you Webby for the info about that, and also.. thank you to each person who has come to vote for the fix for this issue. (Hiya Lindens!) I'm hopeful a fix will be coming soon, I'd love to get those new dances into a new hud and get back to filming again!

Good luck to each person still waiting for correction on their own loss

I love a Linden!

dances around her house with all her restored dances

Yay!

To add some useful information, ask them to run the inventory restore process that takes up to an hour. You need to be logged off at the time.

I was also told that they were looking at everyone who had commented on this JIRA, perhaps they are working on yours as I type

My huddles was there when I came back, sitting in the top level of my inventory, along with a few other bits and pieces I must of lost at some point.

Yay!

Mitzy, that's fantastic, congrats!!

*My huddles was there when I came back, sitting in the top level of my inventory, along with a few other bits and pieces I must of lost at some point. *

OK, I've not lost any of my HUDs, spheres etc in this issue, however I do have several support tickets I'd filed for many things lost over the entire time I've been here plus reports from before support tickets existed. At one point, there was an Abranimations dance sphere with 3 animations I'd created in it for a party. Tho I did have the dances in my inventory, it was rather costly to rush back to the store and buy another Abranimations dance sphere before the event started. (compounded by my anger over the situation and the blase attitude on the part of the staff person who was supposed to be helping).

If perhaps that wonderful Linden hero who helped you would contact me, I'd like to try this one hour inventory fix to see if I could get any of my past lost items back. please?

I wonder if this is somehow related to the "inventory won't rez" issue? There seems to be a fundamental problem with older assets. I've lost about $2K worth of hair and objects, some irreplaceable. They still show up in inventory but won't rez and there's no error.

(And, while I don't own a Huddles, Keiki is awesome and certainly not a "greedy vendor".)

I have also just lost my Huddles and all my animations within. This happened after I hit the release keys button by accident, I didnt replace it or detach, just release keys. Have done a search within my inventory but cannot be found. I hope this issue can be resolved very soon. In the meantime I will pray the above will find my Huddles back, otherwise Ill not be happy to loose 8000L worth of poses and animations.

For the record, Basic accounts can not officially report inventory losses via support tickets.

That's like 95% of the population who just has to "suck it up" when items like this vanish. I lost my heavily-modified KDC Posture Collar. (and the guts of an Amethyst at the same time)... so I'm out already like 1600 L$ just for the commercial parts, this doesn't include the animations I installed in it, or the one-of-a-kind remodel.

I tried all the ususal methods of retrieving inventory.

I went and "misfiled" a support ticket, because the system allowed me to file the report, but you can pretty much guarantee that some linden will close the support ticket as being "not in my pay grade".

Quote the email I received:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our system shows that you submitted this ticket from
either a Basic account or with Guest Access. Basic
account holders and guests may only submit tickets
using the ticket type "Special Questions - Basic account
or Guest Login". You did not select that ticket type, so
the ticket will not be reviewed.

If your issue is one of the ones we offer support to,
please submit another ticket with the information
corrected.

I had a 'huddles' filled with approximately 6000L$ worth of no-copy dances and anims..... after 'detaching' my hud, it did not go back into my inventory and has simply 'vanished'... I cleared cache and relogged several times but my animations along with the hud that they were in are still missing from my inventory.

I've filed a support ticket and hopefully I along with all the other who have suffered similar losses will be able to get this issue RESOLVED!!

I just lost my own Huddles in a rather mysterious chain of events, as well. I detached it as all of the above have said and in my case, it popped to the 'library'. (Inventory doesn't go there, yeah.) I went to move it back to 'my inventory' and my client crashed. POOF there went 5000L of dances and my HUD. This has GOT to be looked into.
I filled a support ticket but had to go around about way to deal with it as I'm a basic account. I doubt they'll even help. Seems Basic accounts don't have a spot for inventory loss.

Next I'll try the support chat.
Edit Okay can't do the support chat. Basic account. Well bugger!

Good luck to all of you who have also lost these items. Frankly I find it horrid that these places don't make this stuff copy/no transfer. It seems absurd to have such a risk since dropping the HUDs and chimeras is the only way to load them.

Is it just 1.19.1.4 users being affected, or is anyone using something different?

Thaumata Strangelove added a comment - 05/May/08 07:16 AM
The above stories seem pretty consistent to me, which is usually indicative of a bug, and not some vague user error that only affects one person. Also, Keiki probably sells more AO HUDs than pretty much anyone on the grid and has always been a well informed seller. If Keiki is getting daily reports of this happening, that's reason enough for me to be concerned. I'm quite sure that after two and a half years with my EZAD, I've got over a hundred thousand linden dollars invested in mine.

Even if LL wants to shrug this off as grid issues in the last two weeks, these grid issues are concerning enough that they deserve to be assigned to someone and given a serious exam and evaluation.

I'd wager it's been happening for at least a month- my original support ticket was created on 11 April, and I filed it after I logged in one morning to find the HUD I had detached the night before had vanished. When I did get my misplaced inventory back, there were 2 more items than I realized I had lost, so likely it had happened before. In fact I had a sneaking suspicion about a HUD that went missing about a week or so before that, but chalked it up to my own forgetfulness (figured I had renamed it or something, and forgotten its name).

Also, I experienced the problem using two different versions of the viewer. Might have been three- I usually am using whatever RC is on the table at the time and there have been a few of those released in the past month or so.

I've tried to reproduce the loss since getting my stuff back (I do not have more than maybe 5000L invested in my HUD, and if it came home once, they can find it for me again I say)- but to no avail. If I could vote for this issue every day I would- it is evil, slippery, scary... and it MUST be stopped!

Had the same thing happen to me TWICE about 3 weeks ago. Because my account is basic, filing a support ticket was just wasted time. Over $4000 worth of Sine Wave dances gone. Didn't realize there was a JIRA on it.

I'd sure love to get those HUDS back!

I am highly upset that basic accounts are apparently being shrugged off by this. I probably pay a little more than a basic account a month in Linden purchases, quite often and apparently they won't help me? Doesn't that amount to something? The stipend doesn't offer the amount of Linden I can buy direct if I just bought it. So premium isn't worth it to me. Nevertheless, I still have lost my own money to this.
I have 'work in progress' on my support ticket but given the reports, here, I am skeptical that anything will be done, given this fact. Does anyone know exactly what steps WE need to do for clearing the specific caches in folders outside of in-world 'clear cache, load to an empty sim' etc etc?

Oh! A question to all of you, do you know if this is happening to people with the old Abraminations and Owenimations chimera balls?

Darien Caldwell added a comment - 05/May/08 12:57 PM
"The stipend doesn't offer the amount of Linden I can buy direct if I just bought it. So premium isn't worth it to me."

Well, i think that is the point of Premium, you get a greater degree of customer service. It's not meant as a substitute for buying Lindens.

If LL gave the same level of customer service to both Basic and Premium accounts, then there truly wouldn't be any reason to be Premium, other than owning Mainland. Think of being Premium as being a bit like an insurance policy. You may never need to use it, but when you do need it, it's nice to have.

It was about two weeks ago that I logged in to discover my emoter hud had dissapeared from my screen and not to be found in my inventory. It was not expensive but I can't remember the name and I bought in a Japanese sim so I have little hope of finding a replacement which is a shame because I really enjoyed having it.

Thaumata Strangelove added a comment - 06/May/08 12:32 PM
@Salores: "I probably pay a little more than a basic account a month in Linden purchases, quite often and apparently they won't help me?"

What Darien said. It doesn't matter how many lindens you spend all over the grid - that money goes to shopkeepers and creators. It doesn't go to Linden Lab and therefore doesn't help fund things like a live support staff. Being premium might seem worthless to you, but considering that it's only a few bucks a month and you get nearly all of it back in stipend, it's sure nice to have when your inventory gets swallowed.

Anyway, when you lose inventory, there are a lot of things you can try before filing a ticket. There is a list here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Inventory_Page

This very same issue happened to me May 5th. I wore a new HUD item which I mistakenly believed was an avatar attachment (a game piece, like a pool cue or a bowling ball – in this instance, a Go stone) by selecting "Wear", and it's HUD location defaulted to top right, where my Huddles is/WAS located. The Huddles never went back into inventory...searching frantically for "No Copy" items, which (and this is an oddity, maybe?) my HUD object was set to – a gf has the same HUD, same Deluxe version release, set up the same day, and her HUD still has no copy perms, as well). Exhaustive search turned up nothing...opened a ticket May 5th afternoon, and have commented 5 times – without response Should have gone Live Chat, I'm guessing...which I will do TOMORROW. I cannot begin to estimate the cost of stands, sits, dances (those I didn't make myself) – not to mention the hours into the individual scripts, running separate animation sets for given number of seconds, etc. It's sickening. My question: I think I understood that No Copy items can be set to Temp upon auto detachment/replacement? Hopefully, this inventory rebuildy will fix my own problems...but why is/was my Huddles Deluxe set to No Copy anyway? I unpacked a fresh copy this a.m. (from the distribution "Open Me" pack) and it correctly HAS Copy perms intact...as did all previous versions. Is there a connection between Copy perms (erroneously assigned upon release or not) and resetting of the Temp switch, upon auto detachment? I nearly didn't notice my Deluxe had No Copy...since I use only one at a time; and, if there is a connection, might other users with the same problem been utilizing a No Copy v1.2, unknowingly? Thanks for letting me rant...back to the Quest tomorrow. HQ

Webby Merlin added a comment - 06/May/08 05:46 PM
To Haneru: I feel your pain my friend.. about the NO COPY perms on your Huddles.. It's COPY until you add a NO COPY dance or animation to the contents. It automatically switches then, just like any other COPIABLE object with NO COPY contents added. This keeps you from having 6 versions of your Huddles (or a backup) of things with NO COPY in it. The HUD itself can be copied.. (empty or as it comes out of the box) and this is normal. You are not losing your mind.. I am confident that the people in the LIVE CHAT area can help you in this case...give them your ticket number when you strike up a conversation, remember that IE doesnt necessarily work with the LIVE CHAT but a copy of Firefox will Good luck!

Thanks Webby! Not sure about the "losing my mind" part...I believe these noob stands and the duck-walk have had an effect. Uh...so adding no copy items to copiable objects will set No Copy on the entire object...SIGH...things that make me go DOH.... Will dive into Live Help straightaway ...much obliged!

This fortunatly did not happen to me (yet). But it did happen to my friend, who was using the DANCE FOO. She did detach it and it went missing from inventory. She lost all her sine wave dances. So she did replace them, including the dance foo. And they went missing again!!!! So it seems that the problem is not just affecting the huds, but attached objects to an avi aswell.
I must say, I'm affraid to detach my dance foo, because I have around 20K of L$ of dances from sine wave in it. By god, I hope I do not detach my dance foo by mistake and am very cautious.
Hope it gets resolved very soon, because this is costing a lot of people a lot of hard earned dollars.

Haneru Qi added a comment - 08/May/08 03:41 PM
This detach bug is pervasive and repeatable, for me. Believing that an auto-detach had been the cause of my own inventory loss, I manually detached my Huddles this a.m. to add some new anims to it. And – naturally enough – it went away. Again. Having renamed my newly-recovered Huddles just yesterday, on May 7th (after Rheya at Live Chat kindly refreshed my inventory) as "HAN_AO_RECOVERED_WOOT", it was with some irony and increasing frustration that I pulled up Live Chat and asked to have my inventory (again) refreshed, instancing that name for my Lost Item. The copy of the Huddles (containing all of my original content) was returned upon refresh, but – oddly enough – with it's original (not my wryly edited) name for it. After 1st experiencing this on the default client, and having switched to the new release candidate on May 6th (to enable my 3D Navigator), i can say that if this bug exists in both. Incidentally, I run xp64, which has never required the slightest tweak to handle SL, but may be a point of congruency amongst these? I wonder if it would be a viable workaround – given the immense amounts of SL revenue and traffic generated by the sale of animations (to say nothing of poofs and such), and that such anims are most-frequently accessed through a HUD – for all users of a HUD-based ao interface to simply open up Live Chat whenever purchasing, installing (or even just thinking about) a new dance, say? Or maybe whenever one plans to add any new sit or stand, and so on? Then – when the HUD disappears from one's inventory – the belabored Live Chat staff will be able to "fix" the problem most expeditiously. With an extra one or two thousand inventory refreshes per day (a rough and modest estimate, given my own shopping patterns multiplied by the number of users who I've allowed a bit more restraint than myself), perhaps the bug would get a faster-track fix? Or – at the very least – the details of this bug could be shared amongst support staff - rather than pointing users who've suffered the loss of an expensive and highly tweaked ao towards the accurate (but not at all helpful, in this instance) default "Inventory Loss" help pages, as I saw on JIRA MISC 1167, this morning. Thanks for letting me rant...and please Vote Early, Vote Often...I may want to add some stuff to my HUD eventually.

Thamata, the point is, I am paying the Lindens for the linden. It's silliness at this point. It's a known problem at this point but because we are basic accounts we get nothing, not even a response for the support tickets we've entered. It's been a week now. No return, no reply.

Sure maybe premiums get more perks and customer service options but EVERYONE should get some sort of customer service. Especially if we are still paying into Linden Labs. I and other basic accounts are basically getting zero, zilch, nothing. Live Chat or not. They should at the very least address our tickets, as well as the premiums even if we don't get the 'live chat' option.
Of course, at this point, what you're saying is I have to pay 10 bucks to replace 20 bucks. That seems a bit much, at this point.
It's a known problem and yet we have to pay to fix it. This isn't something that should require a live chat just to have it looked at.

I find it pretty appalling that even with over 140 voters, this issue is still "unassigned", plus there hasn't been any official act to get the word out to more people to cut down on the losses. I've done what I can so far to get the word out, but it feels like the effort was just one grain of sand's worth upon all the beaches of the entire planet.

It's been heart wrenching to see the number of folks losing items getting larger, the total losses adding up and also that the details about the basic members' losses seems to be considered unimportant. I would hope even if it isn't evident, that their details are also being scrutinized towards a fix.

At a different website where I've volunteered since 2000, such inconsistant issues were considered to be "corner cases" and any information about them was desirable to those who would be trying to fix it.

Sure, a workaround is great and I'm very glad for those who have been fortunate to recover their items, but a fix and resolution of this issue is needed right away.

When I had worn a hud, it assumed the top left position where my huddles ordinarily is. Huddles (1.0.1 version( detached, and I thought nothing of it, as most huds usually do detach when something else in that spot is worn. When it came a point that I needed my huddles it was completely missing. Gone.

The huddles came with two versions, the main, and the replacement. The original mysteriously disappeared, and before I knew of this glitch, I assumed perhaps I'd dropped it, I was peeved, but had the backup. With both versions now gone, I lost all of my animations loaded onto it, about nine, priced at an average of 250 that was 2,250 L$ lost. Replaceable but frustrating.

I panicked logging in last night finding myself wearing ZERO attachments. There were two errors in chat claiming "couldn't create object, try again". I tried to put my hair on, my boot bases, to no avail and the same error message. I did peek in my folders and saw that my four HUDDLES quick pose huds were in their folders, but due to this issue I didn't want to risk them. I logged out and cleared cache, and still logged in wearing no attachments and couldn't put my hair or boot bases on. About 90 minutes later, I logged back in and everything was attached correctly on my avatar and functioning properly. (to my great relief)

During this, someone in the sine wave island group asked for help in the group chat, and according to the customer service gal, they have loads of notecards from other folks who have lost their dance appliance items and dances. So, there are probably many more people who have not posted about this here who have lost items. I shared the link to this issue.

I wonder as well if any xcite huds have disappeared but maybe people are too shy to bring it up?

I lost and Owenanimations chimera attachment with 6 Sine Wave and 3 other dance animations. Obviously this is no where near the losses suffered by others, but I did want to add my voice to those calling for this bug to be fixed. This loss occurred last week when I took the chim off. I hadn't read about this issue in the forums yet.

My question is is it safe to rebuild a chimera?

My filming is now quite far behind, I have at least 30 songs on my short list to make dance videos for my youtube and bliptv, but cannot film without access to all 28 of my different quick pose HUDDLES... for fear that I'd lose any of the 8 I'm wearing.

Not to mention all the new dances I want to get installed into a 29th hud.

Thank you again!

Hi I found repro:

1. Open build menu.
2. rez new box object.
3. rename it "Object A".
4. Attach "Object A" to Left hand.

  • Open inventory list and use filter key "object" make easier what will happen. -

5. You see "Object A" under the Objects folder.
6. Copy "Object A" and paste it in same folder.
7. Rename new "Object A" to "Object B".
8. Drop "Object B" on floor (rez it).
9. Wear "Object B" directly from floor.

Obserbed:
"Object A" dissapear from inventory.

"Object B" appear under the Library folder as "worn on left hand", but it just a shadow. You can't rez it. And relogging make it completely disappear.

Should be:
"Object A" should remain under Objects folder as unweared.
"Object B" should located under Objects folder.

It's not HUD but I think same mechanism.

PS. I lost my sculpted hat

I have lost my Chimera with 20 animations inside TWO times
I was wearing it as an attachment on my chest and didnt detach it, just loged out came back and it was gone

After my first loss the creator SINE and OWEN helped me and gave me new copies of all but now they even dont respond. I guess they are pisses in the same way as many now.

LL is in ticket contact with me
Two support tickets are just "standard tips and tricks for newbies", thouse wont help me getting my items back

And If i would get them back, I would not be able to use them in a save way. They will just disapear again

This is by far the biggest horror bug even happened sinde March 2006 when I joined SL.

And I totally lost the FUN with SL, because its not only the money I have lost, its the time collecting my fun dances and sort them out.

And if there is onebody who tells me I should eat my loss.... I tell them to eat their own butts and FUN!

Not just HUDs... my friend and I BOTH lost our chimeras loaded with dances within a month of each other. 1800L worth for me, maybe 1000 for him. It's crazy. I had to remember all my dances and get them from the vendors again. I now am careful to detach from inventory rather than detach from my avatar, but sheesh.

Im having the same problem as many others here. Last week I bought 4 new dances at Sinewave. I was at a sandbox and inserted the dances, then took them back to inventory to attach and they were gone. Nothing to be found anywhere in my inventory. There were copies of my Huddlez hud, but as you all know, the copy with ALL of your dances will show up as (No Trans, No Copy). It is no copy because the sinewave dances are inside of it. I lost about 19 sinewave dances along with my Huddlez HUD.

My machine is running Vista 32 bit OS, Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor, 1.60 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, 1528 MB ram.

CPU: Intel Core Series Processor (1600 MHz)
Memory: 1526 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista (Build 6000)
Graphics Card Vendor: Intel
Graphics Card: Intel 945GM
OpenGL Version: 1.4.0 - Build 7.14.10.1409

I hope to get them all back, the loss was huge when calculated into Lindens. The dances alone average between $250-400L, not counting the cost of the Huddlez HUD.

I have had this happen twice in the lasy 2 weeks, both times while changing by dragging a folder onto myself. In both cases the items did not return to my inventory as expected, but vanished. First was my AO loaded with no copy anims, and the second was my Huddles, also with no copy anims. Both times I tried all known fixes for inventory loss with no luck. Support ticket filed.

I have a theory for the person(s) working on this.

When you wear or attach an object that is sitting on the ground, it's brought into your inventory, but the directory where it resides is not properly saved to the asset server. It's probably left blank. The object is still there, but since it doesn't have any info for it's directory location in your inventory (or maybe it has corrupted information), when you detach the object or even just crash and relog, the object seems to disappear.

When a Customer Service person does a Directory Repair, the objects come back, in the inventory's root directory.

If I had access to the code, I'd be double checking how the directory info is saved when you wear something from the ground.

I had this happen yesterday when I attached a HUD that I thought was going to attach at the bottom. Fortunately only a few of the animations were no copy, and I was able to replace them. Has anyone asked for copy/no mod/no trans versions of their animations? this would turn the whole thing into a minor nuisance if you have saved the notecards when you changed them.

This issue has cost my only one HUD so far, but it still cost me 400L$, if it isn't more. And support tickets are no solutions to the problem: I lost my ZHAO, the anims inside it and part of the back-up anims I had (strange). We can keep submitting support tickets, but that's just a temporary solution, I reckon this is one of the bugs that need to be fixed ASAP, as it concerns something widely-used by most residents.

I have noticed the HUD does not show on inventory unless I right click on it and then it pops up in the objects inventory. Don't know if this will help solve it but it might be worth seeing if there is something unusual happening at that HUD location. This might also be a work around while the Lindens are trying to fix this, right click the HUD and make sure it is in inventory.

So many things have gone missing from my inventory and all HUD related. I have heard many things regarding a bug that is doing this or even not putting a HUD back into your inventory after editing on the ground (wearing it right after instead). So many AO's and chimeras have gone poof out of my inventory- and I guess I just have to wish for the best and hopefully a Linden will see this and help me....For I'm a basic account member, and getting a prem account is not an option- so there goes my "live chat" to get the problem fixed. I think basic account members should have this option that prem account users do- we lose things just as much as they do I'm sure.

Good luck to everyone,
I'm still wishing that something amazing will happen to me about this problem :/

I've had this problem quite severely..lost two chimeras stuffed with sine waves dances, three collars full of gorjus and selkie poses..I estimate about 4000L worth of things completely gone. It doesn't seem to matter if it is replaced, or detached, or rezzed on the ground. I have run all the 'tips and tricks' that are suggested, to no luck. I filed a ticket and they basically told me that they can't recover anything for me. I'm a premium member. I run SL on a Mac, ATI Radeon 1600x. This is totally uncool, and won't buy anymore animations or really anything no copy until i am assured that it won't get lost again.

I have had this issue twice, and here is my theory on how it happened....

While wearing my huddles (which has no copy animations inside of it), I mistakenly replaced it with another hud that attached to the same point.

When I realized that Huddles was replaced....I looked in my inventory to put it back on, and found it was missing.

I had several thousand L's worth of animations inside of this HUD, and it is extremely upsetting to have had it happen not once, but twice.

PLEASE purge the system, and send my missing stuff back...

Hi, at friday or saturday I added some dances to my huddle EZ Deluxe 1.2... at sunday it was gone from my Inventory. I think I detached it and wore it from the ground when I added the dances...

I had about 90 to 100 dances in it.. so over 25.000 $L are poofed, gone.. 18 monthes collecting dances.. nearly all from Sine Waves and many from Animazo... since of all the bugs i am no member anmore.. so I have no support, though I also exchanged RL-money to be in here... plus I work my *** off to be able to afford those things...

I lost also two Quick huddles with poses.. gladly most things in there were copy so the amount of loss is only about 1000 or 2000 Linden...

do something... please

I wonder why there was no warning abotu this bug anywhere????

and don't tell me to clear caches.. my cache is so clear you can see through ...

Same story, although now I know that I am not alone. This problem has happened to me three times, twice with collars (different ones, different days) and once with a new EZ Huddles. In all cases I had loaded onto them anims, including no copy anims. In the case of the collars they disappeared when I put on an item of clothing with a same attachment site. In the case of the Huddles I detached the hud. In all cases I lost everything, and it never showed up.

Very very frustrating and seems radically unfair that given the scope of the problem that one needs to have premium account in order to have Linden Lab resolve.

This has also happened to me recently too. It was an Abranimations dance chim with assorted dances from Abranimations and Sine Wave. I submitted a ticket but was told to contact the creator/seller to see if they could help. I don't see why they should have to help, as it was not their fault. I have been using this item perfectly well for a week or two and then it vanished when i replaced the attachment with a different one. the item should have gone back into my inventory but instead I just have the empty folder.

I tried all the suggestions in the reply I received to my ticket but nothing has worked. I am p*ssed off and see no point in getting another chim if the same thing will happen again.

susie susenko added a comment - 17/Jun/08 09:48 AM
This is crazy, I have just lost my second Chim because of this. I went to attach some hair that I presumed would attach the my skull like normal hair, but instead used an attach point of my chin and Voila!!! there we go again, thousands of L$ worth of dances gone. Yes I have cleared my cache. Really this is unacceptable. I have had this Chim for over a year and a half, I really don't think the creator would appreciate me whining for a replacement as suggested in my previous ticket!!

I hope this gets resolved soon. I am not wasting my money on more Chims while this is still an issue.

susie susenko added a comment - 17/Jun/08 01:38 PM
I just want to add that after getting no help via the submitting ticket method, I contacted live help, who were able to reset my inventory whilst I was logged out and there it was on my return.

I have been told they are working on this bug, lets hope it is resolved soon, but to those that can, a chat to live inworld help may just help you locate your missing items too. Good luck because this is a costly and very annoying bug.

Yet another Basic user who has lost over $4000L in dances from her chim. This happened a month or so ago, and luckily the vendor replaced some of the lost dances. But this happened again tonight.

Can Linden Support please do a directory repair as other have stated recovers their lost dances.

Thanks,

Hey Risa-
I feel your pain ( basic here too) I lost my dances, 4 times over the last few months and have not replaced any of them due to this bug.

Unfortunately as a basic member the tickets we submit to LL will be rejected. I think there is another Jira open for users who are basic to have the ability to atleast have a directory repair. I'm not positive, but will take a look.

Hopefully this issue will be address soon.

Good Luck,

Nev.

Oh- if you could add your information to reproduce to your post - meaning what you were doing when you lost your dances. It would give more evidence to LL to fix the bug.

Well i've just lost my $20,000L worth of dances in my Huddles too. Same thing, Huddles top left, I wore a stop all animations thing which went top left as a HUD item therefore displacing Huddles.

When I detached that, Huddles had gone.

All the fun has instantly left SL for me, it's now down to whether LL feel like acting upon this or whether Sine replace the lost dances. I should NOT have to pay $9.95 for the privilege of being permitted to make an international call to get back something that is caused by a bug!

daisy overlord added a comment - 22/Jun/08 10:19 AM
Well, it finally happened again. I got a new computer, and the first time I dragged an av folder onto myself (subsequently dumping all my previous attachments) I lost my AO. The other HUD I had on (my MystiTool) was completely fine and still in my inv, but the no-copy AO has vanished again.

Time to send another ticket. o_o

I'd sure like it if replacing my "body" attachments didn't knock all my HUD attachments off. Anyone know if that feature's been requested yet? _ I hate searching this darn jira, it's excruciatingly slow for me.

Just as a follow up to my post, one dismal live help lasting over an hour with a useless rep who insisted it couldn't be fixed via live help and then one the following day lasting just 5 minutes...I have my Huddles back.

Just don't bother with live help at the weekend, they are immune to saying "I'm sorry, I do not have resources available to me to fix your problem, please try during the week". That would have been fine but he insisted on stating that the problem could not be addressed with a live chat and that I would have to submit a ticket, despite my producing evidence to the contrary during the chat.

I lost my HUDDLES EZ Animator a week ago, and a friend told me to wait because it will come back. It's not back despite also doing the manual clear cache/change viewer versions, etc.. So I followed the instructions in Keiki's blog about filing a support ticket. Support tickets don't give you the option to say that the issue is lost inventory, unless you file the ticket as a basic user. I'm a premium user, but I filed as basic anyway because the other categories don't fit with this issue. (is there a JIRA about the lack of comprehensive help category choices in the support ticket system too?)

Anyway, will update this if the Huddles comes back. It's 3 years worth of animations, no copy of course, and some of the animators have gone out of business or removed their animations from sale, so replacing them isn't even possible.

Darien Caldwell added a comment - 04/Jul/08 11:57 AM
Is there any progress being made on this at all? This doesn't just affect HUDs, i've been getting an increasing number of reports of lost collars this way too. It's very frustrating that I get all the blame, and LL sits back and allows this kind of bug to go unfixed for so long.

I just took off my huddles with all my dances, a few thousand lindens worth and a few thousand in animations for the override in it and it disappeared from my inventory. I'm getting really tired of this kind of thing and to see that I'm not the only one, and that it has been an ongoing issue without any thing seeming to be done about it, just makes my blood boil.

We spend real money to buy the lindens we use to purchase goods in SL. Just because we are not premium account holders does not make it ok for LL to ignore us and let us suffer.

NOTE: this only happened with my Huddles, which is nearly always on and rarely removed. My Abramations couples animator and my Mystic Tools have not been affected. Which is also a way of saying that the bug only affects expensive huds, in my experience.

KalisDancer Soderstrom added a comment - 06/Jul/08 09:44 PM
I've also lost a huddle with all dances and animation overrides in it. It happened on the day of the database upgrade last week. But reading here it sounds as if it had nothing to do with that.

I would very much like my item with all animations/dances back please.

yooo hooo? Whoever is fixing this, could we please find a resolution soon? I just logged in to find all 8 of my huddles quick pose huds detached, (that's 160 no copy dances) as well as my Abranimations dance sphere with 213 dances in it detached as well. (every attachment was off my avi upon login).

I just spent a terrifying 10 minutes carefully putting them all back on so I could dance. Fortunately, all were intact.

I've just logged back into SL a bit over 2 hours after my last post, only to find ALL of my attachments are off... AGAIN.

I'm in SL to enjoy it, but I am not enjoying this.

I think I'll go play a game that actually works, while those who are in the driver's seat work out whatever is wrong with the grid today. I'm not going to risk my dance collection.

I had detattched my HUDDLES yesterday while doing something where I needed my screen clear so I could see what I was working on. I didn't go to reattach til hours later and that was when I was noticing it was missing. 20,ooo$L worth of dances....GONE. I had an empty huddle and a couple fo dances with were copyu so I added them, depressed that I wouldn't get my old huddle back after clearing cahce, relogging, trying a different viewer, etc.

Now the damn veiwer is saying the NEW HUDDLE is not in my inventory even though I am wearing the damned thing! It shows on my screen and I can click on it to dance, but my inventory says it is not there and when I look at my "attach to hud>" screen, it shows my bottom right where it is atached to not have a hud attached to it. WTH is going on?

It took me MONTHS of hard work to build that other huddle up. I want it back. This is crazy! I already filed a support ticket, but being a basic, I know I am going to get told I misfiled.

I was about to try to extract no-copy animations (Discord) from their AO (still Discord), when I noticed that putting them in another AO would make that other AO no-copy. And I also noticed that doing the opposite, is to say, putting the other animations in Discord's, would also make Discord's AO no copy since when rezzed and taken back into inventory, Discord's AO becomes no-copy anyway, because of its contents.

Of course, in both cases, I still have a copy of Discord's AO, but I can't use the modified AO on more than one folder/avatar... Well, the only way is to create by hand the same AO every time. What a mess.

The final word? Never buy no-copy animations.

I've considered buying some animations form Vista, but when I saw that they had random permissions, I walked away.

This just happened to me when I was trying to clean out my inventory and accidentally attached a hud that had the same location. poof my AO is gone. I file a support ticket asking if someone can go look for it since I KNOW from here and other threads (SLU/forums, etc.) that some people are getting them back with help but OF COURSE I get a canned response. I expect too much when I think that support staff would be aware of a known bug like this and take the time to give a decent answer [edit: dang I sound like a B here. It's just my simmering anger at the canned response. Who was the customer service efficiency god that decreed I was doomed to be answered with text from pages I had already read for eternity? I renounce thee!]

Ultimately the support response says I should:

"Request a replacement
Many vendors understand that items may be lost by accident or as the result of an unfortunate circumstance. If recovery efforts fail, contact the vendor and request a replacement."

Hmmm-- so basically I should contact at least 20 different vendors asking them to spend their time searching through transaction records that are ooooooold so they can give me back something that by itself cost 25-75 cents? I think I'll just eat the combined losses, thanks- not that I really want to or can afford to. But I'll be darned if I'm going to make your bug someone else's time suck.

Here's hoping another four months doesn't pass before this gets fixed.

I lost mine too. I dragged the AO from my inventory onto the ground and then spent an entire afternoon and evening meticulously picking the perfect animations, and I must say, it looked pretty fabulous. After I finished several hours' work (I am a bit ocd) I wore the hud straight off the ground, right-click, more, wear... I later changed to a different outfit, and the hud detached. It's gone. I've searched my inventory, I've searched my home, and no doubt about it. It is gone.

I have lost 2 Chimeras and 3 AO's to this bug.
I too dropped the HUDs onto the ground and spent hours making sure the animations were full of fabulousity!
I then 'wore' the HUD and just to make sure, detached it, waited at least 30 seconds for the asset server to notice it then reattached it.
All was good until I relogged and it was simply gone.
I'm not premium so I am resigned to the fact they are gone for good.
Should that be the case?
I paid for it like anyone else. I took steps to minimize loss (especially after the first loss).
A few months ago LL announced we should look in our Lost & Found folder for returned objects and I got a very old AO back through that process.
Let's do that again!!
Asking every individual to submit a support ticket on this issue is a little rich.
I don't have that much time and for my apathy I am prepared to live with the estimated 8,000L I lost.
If it's possible to restore one persons lost items, it must be possible to restore everyone's lost items.
LL have done it before - so do it again!
Current issue for me is ALL HUD's are not persisting after relog.
They are not lost, they are back in inventory and need to be reattached each time I log in.
This is a new issue that started with the latest encrypted RC viewer and for me affects the Main Client too
I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing this.

A BIG thank you to LL for giving me back my HUDs!
And a HUGE thank you to Keiki Lemieux for twisting my arm to submit a ticket!
The system DOES work!
I described the loss and then asked "that LL perform a 'inventory restart' on my account."
Keiki's blog (link above) has some great advice on how to prepare for this request.
These HUDs were lost for over a month and are now back.
I am on a basic account and this was by submitting a ticket only.
I'm off to enrich the SL economy with my rent$, some serious $hopping and tip$ for performers.

There's about a zillion JIRA issues reporting this problem that should be linked as related or dup rather than closed as "inventory loss – contact support".

Probably anything that matches "chimera" in the title, in fact.

Had this happen to me earlier. Was using the advanced menu:

Advanced > Character > Character Tests > Test Male/female

which detached everything, including HUD items. This was not replacing one HUD with another, but more like the way replace outfit works, I guess. Anyway, my AO vanished. It was no mod/no copy/no transfer (due to mixed permissions on the animations inside). I put in a support request a few hours ago as suggested and thankfully I've got it back now.

Thanks Linden Lab Support

If you're Basic and have a significant amount invested in your HUD/AO, it would probably be worth paying the $9.95 for a month of Premium membership so you can access Live Chat for assistance. The 300L/week of stipend means you'd also get about half that cost back in L$.

btw.. thanks to the support I got my huddles all back ..

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 20/Nov/08 12:37 PM
One reason that it may seem to happen to items that you edit like Chimeras, AOs and Animation HUDs, is because those things are much more likely to be worn from the ground than things like the Mysti HUD. Since you never have a reason to drag something like the Mysti HUD onto the ground, you aren't going to wear it from the ground either.

It can't be stressed enough that there is a very very high correlation between wearing objects from the ground and losing them via this bug. This should be a clue to whoever is "working on it" and a warning to the SL population at large.

I have lost all my dances and my huddles. i replaced all the dances only to lose them again, its a waste of money and time to buy those dances again for no reason. i detached the EZ Huddles onto the ground to load each dance into it and i left clicked it and chose wear. i also detached it to put on another hud. then when i went back to put on the huddlez, all my dances that were already loaded on disappeared.after reading all the comments above i realized that was a mistake. There must be a way to get all our dances and animations back. this is not a support issue. its a bug that should be fixed and i think i speak for everyone in this discussion board when i say we've waisted over 2k on replacing dances just for them to disappear again and we want them to be recovered

I seem to be having this problem with ANY object that is dropped and thne worn from the ground, almost 6 months after I found I had problems with this issue. You'd think by now they could have fixed something as critical as this, when basic functions that all residents perform when modifying something are involved with things that we pay real money for. Kind of sad.

So, back in August I find myself commenting "Here's hoping another 4 months doesn't pass before this bug gets fixed." Silly me. I've now lost the same AO 2X due to this bug. One split second of trying out a new car without thinking about the HUD issue and poof! I'm not laying odds on the status 4 months from now. Kinda sad is an understatement. I, for one, would appreciate some communication. Why is this taking 8 months to fix?

Georgie Greggan added a comment - 05/Dec/08 03:11 PM - edited
I have had Huddles EZ Deluxes almost since they first became available and other AOs before that. [EDIT: I have four accounts all with Huddles EZADs] My experience teaches while there may be SL bugs, I have been careful enough to never lose an AO or any content.

I wish people would read Keiki's advice (http://imakehuddles.com/wordpress/) about how to edit the AO. People are saying that their Huddles disappeared following wearing it from the floor. In my experience this is not possible. My r-click pie menu has NEVER shown me an option to "Wear" it from the ground — it has always been "Take" back into inventory. Is this the "bug" that sometimes shows "Wear" in the pie menu? I have never seen this bug. If you see "Wear", escape the pie menu and try again.

In addition, I have followed the rule about using care when dragging no-copy anims to the Huddles. My Rule (1) never edit the Huddles until you assure yourself that SL is currently stable; Rule (2) drag one item at a time; Rule (3) wait until the Huddles has accepted each new addition — this may take a minute or so — before tackling the next item*; Rule (4) only take back the Huddles when you are satisfied all transfers are fully complete and acknowledged; finally Rule (5) be patient and meticulous.

I have been using these devices for eons and never lost an AO or any content. And I have gone through some really testing experiences, crashes, and any sort of failure that you can name. I therefore question the need for this Jira. The problem is almost always the user has done something wrong.

  • When dragging an item to the Huddles, drag and HOLD the new addition over the contents folder. Hold for about 5 seconds and then drop it. The result of the hold is that the contents folder closes while it processes the transfer. After about 20-30 seconds, it will reopen automatically. After that event the Huddles is ready for another transfer.

Thaumata Strangelove added a comment - 05/Dec/08 03:33 PM
Georgie, I think maybe you misunderstand the issue that most of us are facing. You are correct that not following Keiki's very good advice can lead to additional issues. However, the bug we are reporting here (and have been for months) is that when you attach a new hud, it can cause your old hud to simply disappear and never return to your inventory ever again. So, if you do something like replace your outfit, you could lose your entire AO in a single step. It's absolutely not the same as what happens when you drop in a bunch of animations at once and the huddles eats them. I assure you, there is no "user error" involved. It's just an inventory glitch that comes about from one HUD replacing another.

It's disappointing to me, too, that this issue hasn't even been addressed really. I work full time in SL building universities and lost three years worth of animations when my HUD disappeared. I lost all my dances, poses, gestures, etc. It really took the wind out of my SL sails and there's no way I'm re-buying those items before this bug is fixed. That's idiocy.

Sophia Tantalus added a comment - 05/Dec/08 03:52 PM
Georgie, I'm still irritated as heck so I'll bite.

"I have been using these devices for eons and have never lost an AO or any content. And I have...gone through any sort of failure that you can name. I therefore question the need for this Jira. The problem is almost always that the user has done something wrong."

First, I want to congratulate you on not losing any content. I also want to offer my condolences since as a HUDDLES customer service rep this issue and others must make up a large part of your job. There's no question care on my part or on the part of other people may help limit this loss-- had we known of the need to take care in the first place. Keiki's advice is very nice- since I don't own a Huddles I had no reason to know about it other than from this thread. But really, despite your luck and/or excellent command of the SL environment there really is a bug. My loss had nothing to do with editing the AO. In fact, it was attached from inventory which kind of blows a small hole in her theory. All that happened to me was that a friend passed me a car he built to try out. I dropped the objects on my av without thinking that one might be a hud in the same slot as my AO: new hud replaces AO, AO disappears from inventory. Since it's happened twice to me and many more times to others it's definitely reproducible. If replacing a HUD in this way can cause loss it would be better if it couldn't be done? Perhaps a pop up that says "Are you sure you want to replace your HUD with another?" would be an option if the underlying problem is too hard to pinpoint.

And, yes, you can wear from the ground. Just click "more.." and you'll find it from the second options screen.

Georgie Greggan added a comment - 05/Dec/08 05:44 PM
My mistake. Apologies. But I did expect some angry feedback. Perhaps I assumed too much. However, this topic started out by being about Huddles losses. Anyway, why would you take the pie menu option "more" to find "Wear" when "Take" is available on the first look? This matter may well be about education. Residents should understand that all your property and gadgets belong first and foremost in your inventory. "Wear" from the inventory and not from the ground. Wearing from the ground may not have immediate consequences but it will bite in time. Asset servers can only work as designed when your items are inventory based. Sure, some items will appear in the inventory when worn from the ground but they are not truly based in your inventory but based on the sim ground from where it was worn.

I, too, have "Worn" all sorts of HUDs, unprepared for the consequences of what might be knocked out. My Huddles HUD has often been knocked out by other HUDs wanting the same screen location. That has never caused any problems for me because when I wear the HUDs, I wear them from inventory and never from ground.

Can folks here honestly state that they NEVER wore their HUD item from the ground, prior to the accidental loss? Your wearing from the ground may have been weeks or months earlier and had been totally forgotten.

Make it a rule not to wear from the ground. Ever.

I acknowledge that if people have never honestly worn from the ground and HUDs or content have been lost through being knocked out by attaching another HUD, there MAY be a bug. But I have never experienced it. Maybe, I AM lucky. But I think I am a good asset manager, also.

@Thaumata: I used to often use the "replace outfit" option in the Inventory. This would obviously knock out all my gadgets (including the Huddles), shoes and whatever. There was never a glitch or a loss. I later changed my methods to "add to outfit" — I never use "replace outfit" now, as there is a lot less work involved and my gadgets and HUDs remain attached. Luck? Or good management? Now? I have named sets of basic bodies (shape+skin+eyebrows), sorted clothing sets, shoes and hair. And a gadgets and HUDs folder. Naturally, I wear the body first, "add to outfit" the clothing set, then add to outfit the gadgets folder followed with wearing of hair and shoes selections. I found that creating complete outfits comprised of avatar+clothing+hair+shoes+gadgets in various combinations created so much duplication for each of the avatars I made, that the inventory was always very bloated. I used to make a complete outfit for every dress I bought. Crazy stuff. So I don't "replace outfit" any more — I have no "complete" outfits. After around 8 months since changing my policy, I am still finding an unacceptable amount of duplicated clothes shoes, hair, shapes and skins. Sorry, got a bit off topic there.

@Sophia: I have no connection with Huddles except as a satisfied user.

Best wishes.

Georgie

Georgie... even though you have spoken to the rest of is in a "holier than thou" tone, and managed to (at the very least) annoy those of us who have lost our HUDs and their no-copy content through NO FAULT OF OUR OWN.. I do NOT look forward to the day when you get bit by this bug. I figure it's just a matter of time and yes, LUCK because good inventory management has nothing to do with the fact that there is a legitimate, critical bug here. If there is WEAR from ground option, that SHOULD mean that asset management can handle it, OR... LL should take it off as an option. Period. It's much like saying.. Here's 3750 prims for your open space sim .. oh but if you use them we'll call it Misuse and boost your tiers 67%. (I too can get off topic so it seems....

In support of those who have lost their Huddles.. been there.. twice.. recovered once. I'm currently without it although it sits in inventory, when i go to wear it it says "Object not in database" - which is another support ticket and companion JIRA issue being back burnered cause nobody knows how to fix it i guess. VWR-2148 - I have never worn anything from the ground for one main reason... there is no way to specify where you want it worn that way.. from inventory I can say Attach to HUD.. and get locations. Same with clothes and body parts etc, so I can confirm that wearing from the ground is NOT THE ONLY WAY to lose your Huddles.

When you do lose your well-managed Huddles through no fault of your own.. I do hope you'll return to this thread and join our comiseration. Get your friends to vote for it when it personally affects you, I guess we are waiting for it to happen to a Linden. I'm still waiting for ani-master Easy Babcock to offer Copy animations so it doesn't cut so deep to lose your AO, but it's still a critical BUG that we lose HUDs at all.

Thanks for reading and have a great SL day.

daisy overlord added a comment - 06/Dec/08 12:55 PM
It was my understanding that this bug wasn't specifically affecting ONLY the Huddles product- or even just HUDs! It certainly wasn't the case for me, as I have lost my AO (a simple one prim item with an old version of the Franimation Override in it, nothing fancy, but kept on my HUD) no fewer than three times after editing and re-wearing from ground and/or replacing it by mistake with another HUD,etc. I've also lost items that had AOs in them but that were worn on a body attachment point (a flying broom held in a hand, for example). Each time something is lost, I've been told something else NOT to do with my stuff. The last time I reported something lost this way (the broom) I was not expecting any issue with something other than a HUD, so I did what I normally do if i edit something- I wore it right from the ground.

Try as I might to repro the thing, it generally doesn't want to happen unless I toss a no-copy animation into the item, and then I'm back to filing a ticket with LL, who have always fixed it- though not without some finger pointing back at me (Of COURSE I checked to make sure I didn't stuff it into the floor of my house by mistake, what am I, new? _ )- and every time all it has taken is an inventory repair. One would think that the more reports sent, the better, but after the last bordering-on-annoyed response I got to my ticket, I wonder if we're going to be told just not to use anything in our inventories anymore, because losing stuff is too much of a hassle for support to help us with.

@Webby... Pardon me for living! I am trying to find out what I have to do to protect myself from loss. Like many here, I have a big investment in animations and, for that matter, my time as well.

It appears that there is no cause for this that anyone can describe. Except that there is a suspicion that having worn one's gadget from the ground at some point in history, the device MAY disappear. If that IS the cause then I am safe. But I just do not know. So I worry. And people bite my head off for saying that the loss has not happened to me. YET. So what I wanna know is is there something I have done or not done that is protecting me.

Indeed, I have voted for this issue and so have some of my friends. They also have big investments with dances and animations. It happens that none of them have lost their devices in over 12 months. They are concerned about this too.

Yet no one can tell us what things to do to protect our stuff. That's why I am participating here. Maybe, we are learning something here but what? Is there something to be learned from people who have NOT lost their AOs and animations? You tell me.

Today's my 1-year rez day ... and it just happened. I accidentally hit "Replace Outfit" and lost my AO and my dance attachment with all of my no-copy animatons/dances inside. The AO was a HUD, but the dance attachment was just that, an attachment on my av. I placed a ticket in to support, so we'll see what happens I guess. This is the first time I've ever lost anything and I'm definitely not happy about it lol.

Voted.

Okay this happen to me again tonight.. And I thought I was smooth saling for months!.

I was in my home region, hit detached, went to inventory to rez my hud to the ground... NOTHING. POOF, cleared cache, and then was force to upgrade to latest viewer. ( I'm soooo mad at that!)
Contacted live support, cleared cache, log into a Pooley, waited for inventory to load and still nothing. I have logged a ticket with LL, to get this issue resolved. i cannot believe this has NOT been fixed! :-|

menchor barbosa added a comment - 12/Dec/08 10:13 AM
This is an ongoing problem, and can happen several ways. Wearing the HUD instead of taking it back into inventory and then wearing it. It can also happen when another HUD replaces it on a wear, as in wear this HUD and it goes to an occupied location, and the HUD in the occupied location vanishes. A replace outfit action that includes a HUD can cause it, as can hitting the all too prominent release keys button (which I have turned off in Cool Viewer for that reason). This bug needs to be tracked down ans squashed! It is not just not being careful, I had 2 HUD's recovered bu the Lindens, and one of them was in inventory limbo (above the inventory master folder, but visible) after ACCIDENTALLY hitting the release keys instead of stand up.

Valmont Vollmer added a comment - 18/Dec/08 07:02 PM
I have noticed the same thing as above poster regarding this problem. Two different objects, one is a dog that roams around on ground then attaches itself to your avi (similar to picking up and Wearing a hud like Huddles) ends up in the root inventory folder then disappears after detaching. Same thing happened with my huddles, I wore it directly from ground then detached it and it disappeared. Again, it was in the root inventory folder.

=======

This repro is the same as Nock Forager's, with a little more detail.
[Each test reproduces 100% of the time, except for the "Relog while attached" part.
Sorry for the number of steps, I tried to keep it as simple as possible O_o]

-1 Create a box, name it "A".
-2 Wear the box from the ground.
-3 Once it has appeared in your inventory (worn), right click copy.
-4 Right click paste.
-5 Rename the copy to "B".
-6 Rez "B".
-7 Rename the rezzed box to "C".
-8 Wear the box from the ground.

Observe:
Box "A" disappears from the inventory.
Box "B" is still in the inventory (not worn).
Box "C" is all the way at the bottom of the inventory (worn).

=======

Repeat the test, but with an extra step:
-7a Wear box "B". (Replacing box "A")

Observe:
When you do step 8, box "B" is detached, box "A" is worn, and a second later box "A" disappears from inventory.
The end result is the same as in the first test.

=======

-While wearing box "C" relog.

Observe: You're still wearing box "C", but sometimes it's gone from the inventory, sometimes it's in the object-folder (worn).

-Detach "C" (while it's at the bottom of the inventory) and relog again.

Observe: Box "C" has vanished.

=======

-Do the first test again.
-Detach "C". (not an essential step)
-Rez "B".
-Rename the rezzed box to "D".
-Take "D".
-Rez "D".
-Rename the rezzed box to "E".
-Wear "E" from the ground.

Observe: Box "E" appears as worn at the bottom of the inventory, even after copying and rezzing the original box.

=======

-Detach the object at the bottom of the inventory.
-Try to rez the object.

Observe: The mouse-pointer shows the black stop-sign, it won't rez.

-Try to drag the object to another part of the inventory.

Observe: The viewer (1.21 and 1.22) crashes to desktop.

=======

Precautions:
-Don't make a copy of a worn object.
-Don't wear objects from the ground.

What to do when you're wearing an attachment which doesn't show as worn?

Drop it and take it!

I have had the same thing happen to me 4 times in the last couple weeks. I've lost 4 AO's and my Collar. The last was yesterday, two AO's lost. I was wearing them on my Hud, went to detach one via my inventory because I was leary of just detaching it again. But it wasn't IN my inventory, even though I was wearing it. I searched, I cleared my cache, still not there. I had my inventory window open, right clicked on my AO on my screen and it popped up BELOW my Library, showing as worn. Of course if I tried to move it I would crash again, and it would be gone, been there done that. I detached it and tried to attach it to ME, my hand, it wouldn't. So I relogged, and of course when I came back it was gone, same thing happened to my other AO right after that.

I do want to note that just last month I had started wearing these items from the ground, as others have stated, and had not done that previously

I talked to the mentors, tried all they told me including logging in on a Beta, uninstalling SL, defragging my computer... nothing worked.

I went to Linden Village as one suggested and left a notecard in one of the lindens letter boxes, twice, still no response.
I filed a ticket as suggested and got the standard response that they could not help me as I wasn't a paying member and to please follow the suggestions on the support page, all actions I had already taken and which I had explained to them that I HAD taken. So I'm waiting now with the rest for my inventory to be found and returned, and replacing animations in the meantime.

UPDATED: I talked to a Linden, very nice woman, explained everything, she made a very simple suggestion, clear my cache, relog itnto a quiet region such as Lime, WAIT IN PLACE 5 MINUTES before opening my inventory to give it time to reload my previously cached items, then open it... IT WORKED! I got back all 4 AO's and my Collar... and yes I'd cleared cache many times before... try it!

It's likely the Linden did an inventory restart/fix for you. They will typically ask you to clear your cache after they do this.

I rezzed my dancing bracelet on the ground, put over 1K worth of dances in it and wore the item directly off the ground. After replacing my outfit and logging out/in, the bracelet disappeared.

I submitted a ticket to have my inventory restarted/fixed for me, but this really annoyed me beyond belief and stole all my good dances from me. This really needs to be fixed as soon as possible!

Thank you so very much Qarl. With all due respect however, there are more than the two causes you listed that have caused these important things to disappear. One cause was from an errant click on the "RELEASE" button, yet another was one item being attached yet replacing another in the same spot and the first item disappearing rather than going back into inventory. I really hope that the correction will include all of the listed causes in the entire discussion above.

This issue really has cut into my enjoyment of secondlife, the fear of losing any part of my dance collection plus the empathy to all who have lost theirs, my SL online time is now considerably less than it was last year at this time.

Thank you again.

Phoenixa - i can almost guarantee that i have not found and fixed ALL sources of content loss. however, using the repro listed above, i did find the bug related to copying attachments and wearing them from the ground. whether this fixes most/all of your problems, only time will tell. if, however, you have a repro for another form of content loss (using the "release keys", as you mention) i'd love to hear it, so that i may fix that bug too.

For those not well versed in LL's internal builds, what exactly is the maint-viewer-12 ? 1.22 viewer?

Qarl Linden added a comment - 13/Jan/09 11:03 AM
Darien - maint-viewer-12 is the internal name of the code-block. sadly, its number isn't related to the SL version number. i can't be certain - but i suspect it will merge to RC with the 1.23 cycle.

Yesterday I added 2 animations to my AO, This AO is not a HUD in any way. It is worn on my right shoulder as an attachment to my avatar.
Anyways, Yesterday I added the 2 animations and wore it from the ground apparently not a good idea. Today I was messing around in my inventory and clearing out some junk, and could have deleted it by mistake, but I didn't see any warnings... which for no-copy items there should always be. Anyways, I used my common search query for the item 'mani' (Manimation - Male Animation Overrider) something like that, was its name. and found it missing.

Good luck all, and thanks for your work so far Qarl.

Eric Ruban added a comment - 21/Jan/09 09:05 AM
"wear"-ing a HUD attachment causes currently worn attachment in same attachment location to disappear from inventory.
> In this case, an AO loaded with purchased animations - all disappeared from inventory never to be seen again.
> This happened to me in 2 different sims in 2 different ways. Both times I was wearing the ZHAO-II AO in top-left HUD attach location.
> One, by "wear"-ing a radar HUD attachment that defaulted to upper left HUD attachment point - the ZHAO-II AO and it's contents
> formerly worn in that location disappeared from inventory.
> Two, by doing a "replace outfit" with a folder in inventory, all HUD attachments were "un-worn" but again a different ZHAO-II AO and it's purchased animation currently being worn as HUD attachment disappeared from inventory.
> I don't particularly want to try this experiment again, as each time it costs me! I suppose the steps could be followed again to prove my point, with something copiable.

Is there no record in Lindan asset server database of items which "magically disappear" like this? Could no process be run whereby these items are detected and returned to residents, with an apology? ("Oops! We're sorry, you didn't screw up, we did.")

I see now that this is a widespread, destructive, and costly issue. I don't feel like going inworld until I get word it's been corrected!

I just experienced what most of the people above have experienced. I have lost 2 of the main huddles I use while performing in tribute bands. I have invested thousands in lost no copy dance animations and would like to know how I can get this back. I did nothing to deserve this. These Huds simply disappeared while trying to put in new dance animations. Is there any help here or just another way for Linden to get more $ from unsuspecting people?

To Fur (and to everyone else who has had this happen to them): YES!

GET HELP THROUGH THE SUPPORT SYSTEM.

Linden Lab can help you with this issue, but you must file a support ticket (or use Live Chat if you have access to it). Support can do something called an inventory restart which will place any object lost in this manner into your lost and found. It doesn't work 100% of the time, but in my experience it works for this bug a great deal of the time. File a ticket even if you are a basic member as they seem to be helping basics with this issue now as a rule.

For more info, read the posts on this topic in my blog: http://imakehuddles.com/wordpress/tag/lost-inventory/

have only lost one chimera in all times.. Today i have over 350 dance anims, value over 100K - as my otherwise huge inventory ( shared with 3 avis.. + 300.000 items all together).. I use atm 28 chimeras.. max 10 anims each.. and the rest just in desktop when needed...
Sure. , you allways though the issue.. what if i lost everything.. ??? since inventory value hmm. its not little bugs anymore...( + 2.500.000L $)..
so Today.. i have RL insurance for all the items i have bought SL!! If my avi lost something.. or Lindens lost all my avi!! My avi is insured to max value of 30.000US$ atm..

take the insurance.. cost to me- 200US$/year - hmm small money.. but sure the issue is not the money.. .-. its the time it might take to buy all back.. hahah - who pays me back - lets say.. 2000 hours i have spend buying/sorting/editing those things inworld..??

xxx... better not to think theese futher.. tc

@Ava

What viewer are you using?

Darien Caldwell added a comment - 01/May/09 08:50 AM
Yes, the fix has finally made it to the viewer, in Release Candidate 1.23.

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release_Candidate/1.23

However, I can't recommend upgrading to that viewer just yet, as it has a slew of problems still to be resolved.

Just don't wear stuff off the ground and you'll be okay in the meantime.

i wanted to add a comment to this since today i lost my ao which i have had with me for about 2 years now. it is suddenly "missing from the database". i tried everything in the knowledge base and currently have an unanswered ticket which i don't hold out much hope for since i am a basic account (and no i cannot afford a premium account.)

i cannot afford to replace all of the animations that were contained within that AO, not to mention some of the animations were made by a creator that no longer exists in second life. i wish that they would do something about this.

my ao shows up in my inventory, but trying to wear it brings up a message saying that it is missing from the database. i hadn't even taken it off. when i logged out last night it was attached, and when i logged in the next day it was detatched. it makes no sense, and i really hope it can be recovered.

This is still an issue in 1.23 [Second Life 1.23.1 (119104) May 4 2009 17:53:10 (Second Life Release Candidate)]

I reproduced it 7x today to ensure I understood what was going on. It repeats every time with this procedure:

1. Have another avatar create an object with default permissions ( no copy / no modify / yes transfer )
2. Give the object to a second avatar
3. Have the 2nd avatar rez the object on the ground
4. Right click on the object and choose Wear (Right Click > More > Wear)
5. Detach the object (Right Click > More > Detach)
6. Open Inventory, scroll all the way to the bottom, there should be an object outside of any folder
7. Click on the object and attempt to drag it inside of the inventory

As soon as you start the drag, the client crashes.

On reload, the object is lost from inventory.

I'm not sure if this is the same bug or not, but I've always had problems with losing my ZHAO-II, which is terrible, because it usually has no-copy animations in it, and it usually has thousands of lindens worth of stuff in it.

Everytime I attach something to that spot in the HUD, i lose my ZHAO-II. I've noticed that if you go into inventory, and try to attach something where the ZHAO-II is attached on my HUD via the "Attach To HUD" menu from the context menu, it doesn't say the ZHAO-II is attached to that spot, however selecting that spot raises a warning about replacing an object on my HUD.

Can anyone confirm this?

Baron - that you for the excellent repro.

Maggie - the fix is for a different code path. this one appears new.

Darien Caldwell added a comment - 11/May/09 12:08 PM
It has to be new, because if that was all it used to take to lose no copy attachments, I would have noticed, given the number of no-copy attachments I sell. I'm afraid to even go try this because if I find this now happens with 100% regularity I'll probably flip out.

Phoenixa Sol added a comment - 11/May/09 02:19 PM - edited
I flip out on a regular basis when I log in and find my HUDs have all been detached, on their own.

To refresh, I wear 8 HUDDLES quick pose huds all the time to dance. This issue, with all it's varients has severely cut into my enjoyment of Secondlife. Every time I log in to find they've been detached for some unexplained reason, it's a rather terrifying time while I pray REALLY hard and reattach them, hoping they're all intact.

So far, I've been fortunate they have been. Also that when I have to put one of my Abranimations dance spheres on the ground to put in new dances, they've not been eaten by the grid. I've still got one Abranimations dance sphere that never did show back up, and no one offered me a Linden Inventory Fix. Should I dig out that ancient email and reply to it?

Never mind the "same attachment point" variation. I'm so paranoid when I get anything new, even if it isn't a hud that I remove everything carefully one piece at a time before I attempt to put on a new outfit, slowly and carefully so that nothing goes onto the same attachment point to force detachment. (that would apply to my dance sphere).

I never use detach all or take off all clothes, just too scary.

I never click the RELEASE button either.

I wont consider this issue "fixed" until every single reason why these disappear has been addressed.

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 12/May/09 07:01 AM
Another reproducible version of this:

1. Create a new object on the ground and name it "test a"
2. Create another new object on the ground and name it "test b"
3. Edit "test a" and put a (no copy) item inside (use a no copy item you wouldn't mind losing).
4. Edit "test b" and put a (no copy) item inside
5. Right click on "test a", click More, Attach and select the left hand.
6. Right click on "test b", click More, Attach and select the left hand.
7. Right click on "test b" and detach it.

What should happen:

"test a" and "test b" should both be in your objects folder and be wearable and rezable.

What does happen in RC 1.23 and in 1.21:

Both "test a" and "test b" appear to be in your root folder. Neither "test a" nor "test b" are usuable. They cannot be worn, rezzed or moved to another folder and trying to do any of these things sometimes crashes the client. After relogging, these objects completely disappear from the inventory.

@Qarl, I don't understand what you mean by, "the fix is for a different code path. this one appears new." Does the fix you made address Baron's reproduction of the bug?

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 14/May/09 11:31 AM
IMO, the reproductions of Keiki and Baron are a different circumstance and are more related to VWR-12525. There is no mention in the original description of wearing from the ground, or the inventory items being parentless, or of even viewer crashing.

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 14/May/09 11:50 AM
@Harleen. I have worked with 100s of people who have lost HUDs and other attachments from this bug. Nine times out of ten, they recall wearing the item from the ground at some point recently before detaching it. The original reproduction of the issue involved wearing an item from the ground. This is the same bug. The reason people don't usually crash is because after they wear it from the ground they don't try to move it in their inventory. They don't notice that it has moved to their root directory. They eventually log out or replace what they are wearing and only then do they realize that it has disappeared.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 14/May/09 12:31 PM
I disagree, in the original description makes no mention of wearing it from the ground. It does say they searched their inventory and found the copyable version first but could not find the one with animations before they ever logged off.

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 14/May/09 01:02 PM
There are a few reasons why it might not be in the original description. First, most people don't realize that the root cause is wearing it from the ground because they wore long before it disappeared. They usually never make that connection until they are asked if they wore it directly from the ground. Some don't remember whether they wore it from the ground or not. There is also a small minority or people who insist that they never wore anything from the ground. That may be true for some cases of this.

However, please note from further comments that we retrieved the original posters HUD after getting help from Linden Lab. And that other items lost via this method have been retrieved using the same method.

Personally, after reading the description VWR-12525, I think they are different variations of the same bug. And fixing one will likely fix the other.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 14/May/09 01:28 PM
Well, my take on Qarl's comment is that the pending fix for this issue is not in the same code path as what is being reproduced by wearing from the ground, so may not fix these cirumstances. And whether the OP wore from ground or not the other major difference I see is that the HUD was not parentless, it sounds like the OP did an entensive search before relogging and I believe would have found it if it were parentless. And I have no doubt that a lot of the duplicate issues to this one stem from loss from your reproduction as it is easily reproducible and this certainly needs fixing ASAP.

Personally, I never wear from the ground, as half the time you are not close enough and it fails and I hate that it puts you in fly mode, so I always take and wear.

cryogenic blitz added a comment - 22/May/09 01:28 PM
This problem possible has to do with the exploit I heard about in Second Life dealing with copying no copy items. They fixed this exploit, but had to break the Save Object Back to Inventory feature. This could be why the detaching from attaching the object off the ground and wearing it and then detaching said item. Till it is fixed taking then wear any items is the best way for the moment to deal with this problem.

Celierra Darling added a comment - 30/May/09 11:20 AM
It looks like baron nowhere found the same repro as I just encountered when rechecking SVC-2956 . I found that bug a while ago, and the symptoms were different back then (no crash, just an error message, and there was more info in the console). Maybe the info from back then might help to figure out what's going on?

Fixed in 1.23.4, released on 06/15/2009.

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 16/Jun/09 06:32 AM
This bug is still in 1.23, just as it was in the 1.23 Release Candidate.

The original reproduction cannot be reproduced because you can no longer copy an object that you are wearing. However, all other reproductions of the bug are still reproducible.

Qarl Linden added a comment - 16/Jun/09 10:54 AM
Keiki - you're right - not all the repros have been fixed... but the problem is - these new repros are caused by completely different bugs, in completely different sections of the code. the best thing to do here is to open new jiras for them, because lumping them all together makes sifting through the data MUCH more difficult.

i'll create the new jiras shortly.

Qarl Linden added a comment - 16/Jun/09 11:09 AM
Keiki, Baron, i've created VWR-14105 for this new bug. (both your repros are caused by the same thing.)

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 16/Jun/09 01:31 PM
@Qarl, respectively these other reproductions have always been the issue. I don't know what your fix was, but it didn't have anything to do with the core issue in the original reproduction. Now we have to start all over again getting people to vote for, comment and follow the new item.

Qarl Linden added a comment - 16/Jun/09 02:03 PM
Keiki - i investigated the bug related to copying an item while it was worn (the repro's provided by Nock and Moon above.)

please don't be upset, we're actively looking into this. no one is trying to pull one over on you by shuffling to a new jira. that's just the best way to proceed.

Phoenixa Sol added a comment - 17/Jun/09 08:16 AM
'Now we have to start all over again getting people to vote for, comment and follow the new item. '

Thank you Keiki, this has been my concern as well. These comments in this JIRA include all the variations of how this has happened, and people have lost things. I didn't feel confident in the fact that just because one aspect might have had a fix and it was closed, that the other causes would just go away.

I'm glad you reopened this, and still fear for everything in my collection. Thank you again Keiki.

Oh, for god's sake, please roll back the restriction on copying an item while it's worn. We absolutely need that ability to undo screwed up edits, until such time as LL fixed "undo" on attachments:

1. Move the wrong prim.
2. Hit undo.
3. Half the prims in the attachment go haywire.
4. Go to inventory, copy attachment, paste it back in the same folder.
5. Detach and delete original.
6. Attach new copy.

There's plenty of other problems with 1.23, but losing this procedure is a complete showstopper.

See VWR-14592

Nock Forager added a comment - 28/Jul/09 04:30 AM - edited
Qarl, sorry to annoying you again, but Gonbe Shan found more easy and critical repro.

You need 2 accounts to reproduce.

  1. Avatar A: Make Next owner - "No mod" "No copy" prim (yes, default params). Name it "Test subject".
  2. Avatar A: Take it to inventory.
  3. Avatar A: Give "Test subject" to Avatar B.
  4. Avatar B: Rez "Test subject" on the floor.
  5. Avatar B: Wear "Test subject" directly from the floor. (Use pie menu).
  6. Avatar B: Detach "Test subject".

Now you see "Test subject" under the Library folder.
It's too easy

oops: this one completely same to baron's repro.

I found another repro needs only one person.
  1. Create two normal prims. (PrimA, PrimB)
  2. Lock PrimA.
  3. Take PrimA. (Press OK when notified.)
  4. Put PrimA into PrimB's inventory.
  5. Wear PrimB directly from the ground.
  6. Then detach PrimB.

Repro!

hey guys - Andrew's taking this over. i wish him the best of luck.

Andrew Linden added a comment - 28/Jul/09 04:14 PM
I've got a server-side fix for this (and also VWR-12525), however it missed the deadline for inclusion in server-1.27.1. If we deploy a server-1.27.2 it will probably be in that, otherwise it would go into server-1.30. My fix doesn't address the viewer crash problem, but instead fixes the server behavior that is tickling the viewer crash bug.

This bug only affects no-modify objects, but causes no-copy objects to be "lost". Until this fix is deployed the workaround problem would be to NEVER attach from in-world - always first take to inventory, then wear from inventory.

I believe, the "lost" inventory items are not eliminated from the inventory database, but instead have an invalid "location" record and so don't show up in the inventory view. We have a automatic script that runs in the background and tries to find such objects and restore them to inventory, however I have reason to believe this automatic script is malfunctioning because I scanned someon's inventory and found 112 items that have been lost - I doubt they lost all those today. I'm going to try to figure out why the repair script is broken.

Andrew Linden added a comment - 28/Jul/09 05:05 PM
I looked into the automatic script problem and found that it is indeed running but it takes too long per account - I estimate it would take at least 278 days to complete! We'e going to have to speed that script up.

In the meantime (until my fix is deployed and until we optimize or parallelize the script) if you have lost inventory items send me an IM asking to have them found and I'll run the scan on your account. Any lost items would show up in your "Lost and Found" folder.

Good News: the fix for this has been merged into server-1.30.

Bad News: the deploy of server-1.30 has been delayed one week. It should start deployment around the middle of next week (probably on Wed. Sept. 16).

rodney linden added a comment - 09/Sep/09 01:42 PM
Until the release of 1.30, we have a ad-hoc solution that fixes this issue. Should anyone find themselves being hit by this bug, please file a ticket with support to have your lost inventory recovered for you.

Thaumata Strangelove added a comment - 09/Sep/09 02:02 PM
So, if I spent some time working with Andrew to recover this and we didn't find it, does that mean there's very little hope that it'll turn up anything later on when the fix is deployed? Or is it a different fix?

Also, although I appreciate the work that's being done here, you might want to warn people to anticipate long wait times on those tickets. I filed one on August 28th about lost inventory during that asset server hiccup (not this lost inventory, a new batch of lost inventory... sigh) and it's not even been acknowledged yet. I'm not sure when 1.30 is due out but it might just be faster to wait for it.

I'm afraid I found a new repro ...

-Create 9 boxes, name them "1" to "9".
-Wear the boxes one by one directly from the ground (not too fast).

Observe: All even-numbered boxes went outside of the normal inventory.

-While still wearing box 9, relog.

Observe: The even-numbered boxes are no longer in the inventory. You're still wearing box 9.

=======

Do the test again, but with an even number of boxes.

After relogging, you're still wearing a box, but it doesn't show in the inventory.
Right-clicking the attachment in-world makes the box appear outside the normal inventory again.
Your inventory-window may start scrolling up and down on its own.
