 Description  « Hide
Avatar Character and Clothing are at partial (Clothing, Tattoos) or full (Avatar Skin) transparency when feet are touching any object or the terrain while Windlight Basic Shaders are ON and/or Foot Shadows are ON.
This affects the Avatar Skin, Tattoos, and Clothing ONLY, this does not affect Avatar Object Attachments, Avatar Eyes, and Avatar Hair.

In Flight or Jump, the Avatar and Clothing will return to full opacity until Feet (and ONLY Feet) touch any object or Terrain. Any other part of the Avatar can touch anything and retain full opacity.

Going into Appearance Mode will restore full opacity WHILE in Appearance Mode ONLY.

Disabling Foot Shadows will restore full opacity without the need to reduce Windlight features, however Foot Shadows are defaulted to ON on a normal install. Foot Shadows also resets to ON on program exit/start. (Advanced->Rendering->Features->X Foot Shadows Ctrl-Alt-F5)

Disabling Basic Shaders while Foot Shadows are still on will also restore full opacity, however that reduces Windlight Features
(Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Quality and Performance->[v] Custom->Shaders:->[v] Basic Shaders)

This occurred when i installed a new ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP card. This may be something that affects Radeon HD Series but not the X1k series as this did not happen with the X1950X AGP card.

ADDENDUM -------

While Foot Shadows are off, even though my own Avatar was restored to full opacity, OTHER AVATARS were not, HOWEVER, panning camera to where my own Avatar was completely off screen other Avatars would be restored to full opacity, then when any part of my own Avatar was back on screen, other Avatars would then revert to skin transparency and clothing/tattoo translucency .

EVEN MORE -------

Disabling Volume, which eliminates all primitive objects (except Linden Trees and Plants) will restore opacity of ALL AVATARS, however all attachments, being primitive objects, are hidden If Foot Shadows is still ON, avatars appear to have flat black rectangles on the bottom of their feet Toggling Foot Shadows while Volume is OFF has NO EFFECT on avatar opacity.
(Advanced->Rendering->Types->X Volume Ctrl-Alt-Shft-F9)

ANOTHER ODDITY ------

At certain positions and viewing angles, much like disappearing alpha channels at certain texture rotations and viewing angles, the sky blanks out. Although Windlight and Classic clouds still render, the blue sky becomes white.(daytime) and black with no stars (nighttime). This appears at first random, but it seems to happen at the same points/rotations/angles... IOW, while walking or turning, the points at which the sky blanks are consistently reproducible, but pinpointing places or patterns is near impossible. Disabling Atmospheric Shaders will unblank the sky, but reduces Windlight features
(Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Quality and Performance->[v] Custom->Shaders:->[v] Atmospheric Shaders)

LINDEN WATER ANOMALY ------

The translucent avatar hides Linden Water. You can see the terrain and objects through the avatar body like a window. Zoom in real close to the body and pan the camera around, you can see Occlusion Culling in action, but having a rather hard time deciding what to do.. reacting to the avatar's idle movements. I would think occlusion culling to the avatar body is unnecessary. Just idle all the calculations that must be involved culling and re-rendering.

THE TELL-TALE SIGN? ----

Hardware Skinning and Avatar Cloth are greyed out Connection? (Likely)
(Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Quality and Performance->[v] Custom-> Avatar Rendering:-> {#] Hardware Skinning)
(Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Quality and Performance->[v] Custom-> Avatar Rendering:->[#] Avatar Cloth)

Oh WOW!! ------

Enabling Anti-Aliasing either in Catalyst OR in SL 1.20.0 at NO LESS THAN 16x will restore full opacity to ALL AVATARS.

Added Additional observation, updated Affected Viewer Version to Current Release as this is still unresolved. These are likely all related as they all happen on my Radeon HD 2600PRO AGP card.. none of these things were issues with the Radeon X1950X Pro AGP.

I'm having all these issues too, but I'm using a HD3870X2. I've tried 1.19.1(4)RC, 1.19.0.5, and the new 1.19.1(4) all with the same issues. If I switch back to my old X1900XT all if fine again. Hardware Skinning and Avatar Cloth in the Graphics options are disabled with the 3870X2, and I've tried playing about with the shader options and VBO but nothing works.

Thanks for the vote (though sorry to hear you have the problems too .)

Ah yes, i had forgotten about them, I have added them to the big description. Those options are also greyed out for me, thanks for the reminder .

Disabling Basic Shaders while Foot Shadows are still on will also restore full opacity, however that reduces Windlight Features :(
(Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Quality and Performance->[v] Custom->Shaders:->[v] Basic Shaders)

(Advanced->Rendering->Types->X Volume Ctrl-Alt-Shft-F9)

Disabling Atmospheric Shaders will unblank the sky, but reduces Windlight features :(
(Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Quality and Performance->[v] Custom->Shaders:->[v] Atmospheric Shaders)

Also having problems and glad I'm not alone - SL Version 1-19 -1-4

Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 AGP with latest drivers (actually, with the hotfixes, it reads as 8.471.0.0) - Newly installed yesterday
Win XP SP2, Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz

Same issues with avatar invisibility or partial visibility as Kettu - the unchecking of foot shadows (Advanced->Rendering->Features->X Foot Shadows) restores visibility, however some object textures seem to cause momentary avatar transparency - not sure, but it seems to be sculpted textures that cause that.

Also, the Hardware Skinning and Avatar Cloth options are not selectable/greyed out under Edit->Preferences->Graphics - Custom.

And, reverting back to Version 1-19-0-5 - I can't select 'Water Ripple' - it's also not selectable/greyed out - it used to work....

I thought I'd add a picture with the avatar transparency issue, with a few open windows like the graphics options, stat bar, and the About SL window from the help menu.

I've tried many different settings in SL and the ATI drivers with no luck so far

UPDATE for me - discovered that none of the released versions of SL (including the Beta and DazzleFIrstLook) render correctly on my ATI-card system - all exhibit the same issue as above.

My other system with an Nvidia card, however, functions correctly.

Thanks thought it would be good to put a pic up on one of the issues.

I found today that disabling foot shadows no longer makes my avatar opaque anymore, partial transparency all the time now like in the pic. Did also find that standing on an object at say 700m+ will make my avatar opaque most of the time, but not other people's avatars. Wonder if you have the same results too Kettu.

I think the reason why our HD2xxx and HD3xxx series video cards are both having issues is because they are made using the same generation GPU, R600 series, while the X1xxx series video cards use the R500 series GPU. Although my partners video card is an HD2600 and it works perfectly so it's a bit weird that it works and ours isn't

Another discovery - if I turn OFF the Catalyst Control Centre and run SL, my avatar and other av's are fully visible - HOWEVER - I crash every 5 or 6 mintues. If I turn on the CCC, then I'm partially visible, but SL is more stable.

Urgh - anyone else notice this? And, do you think we're getting any notice with this?

...sigh...

Hey Kettu - where did you find Anti-aliasing at 16x? My setting in the Control Centre only goes to 8x, but shows 'samples 16x'. I tried that and sadly, no luck for my system. Do you have different options on your system?

Jarnz Dench added a comment - 10/Apr/08 10:58 PM
Jake, have a look in the settings in SL, where the VBO option is, the Anti-Aliasing setting is in there as long as you have viewer 1.20.0 RC. Also make sure that the Control Center Anti-Aliasing is Use Application Settings

I too am having this issue, thanks for reporting it!

Just built a new system, and I am using the latest drivers for all of my hardware.

Second Life RC v1.20
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 6400+
GPU: ATI Radeon HD3870 X2
OS: Windows XP Professional SP2 (w/Direct X 9.0c) / Windows Vista Ultimate Edition SP1 (w/Direct X 10.1)
RAM: 3GB

This problem is present in both Windows XP and Windows Vista environments. Disabling shaders in Windlight does not resolve it, but disabling foot shadows does.

Hope to see this resolved soon! c:

Kettu Keiko added a comment - 11/Apr/08 03:37 AM
----- Setting Anti-Aliasing to 16x -----

If you are using Second Life 1.20.0 there is a NEW option called Antialiasing,
Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Hardware Options->Antialiasing
It's a drop-down box, select 16x to restore avatar opacity.

If you are using an earlier viewer, or prefer to force Anti-Aliasing in Catalyst Control Center 8.3 or higher
3D->Anti-Aliasing

You'll notice SMOOTHVISION HD Anti-Aliasing
If Use Application Settings is checked, you can only get to 16x via SL 1.20 as this greys out the other options

Make sure Use Application Settings is unchecked.
Slide the Level Slider all the way to the right at 8x
Filter is defaulted to Box, this sets the Samples value to 8x
In Filter, select Wide Tent and Samples increases to 16x. (Narrow Tent only goes up to 12x)
Edge-Detect will increase Samples to 24x, but that option only appears if Temporal anti-aliasing is checked.

Jake Amdahl added a comment - 11/Apr/08 03:51 AM
Thank you Kettu - confirmed that RC 1.20 with AntiAliasing turned to 16x solves the transparent avatar issue.

With the earlier version, I tried what you just suggested to no avail. Maybe it's that I have the HD 3850 AGP card...however, I will look again.

Thanks again for the specifics - you da best. Hopefully our chatter will get some notice from above..

Jarnz Dench added a comment - 11/Apr/08 04:34 AM
If I set the Anti-Aliasing in the Catalyst Control Center to anything but Use Application Settings, avatars are transparent again, even if in SL it's set to 16x. And I've also noticed some flickering in the graphics in 1.20RC

The most important issue here is the 'Avatars turning transparent' issue. ATi rolled out a couple more OpenGL fixes with their 8.3 driver release, which works (without defects) with every other OpenGL app I have tried, exept of course, the Second Life (Windlight) Client. The 8.4 drivers (released today) still refuses to work correctly with the Second Life Client, even though it works perfectly well with all the other OpenGL apps I have tried it out with.

Right now, I'm stuck with the slower 8.2 drivers, which lacks the Direct3D/OpenGL performance enhancements of the newer 8.3/8.4 drivers. I just can't bear having my own avatar go transparent, as well as seeing most of the avatars around me go transparent. Regardless of Anti-aliasing being on or not.

I contacted ATI in early march about this and the fix for this has been in ATI's code base for a month and will hopefully be released soon. For now, the workaround is to turn off AA, unfortunately. If the 8.5 drivers, don't address it, we'll need to reopen this and I'll check with ATI again.

I also tried this on the release candidate viewer and the same thing happens... When I remove foot shadows my avatar goes back to normal, but things are still kind of weird, like my avatars eyelashes have this weird white lining around them...
This only happens on my laptop which uses the ATI graphics card.

Hayami, please check you have the most up to date drivers from your card manufacturer.

You can check you have the latest graphics drivers by either going to your manufacturer's site or by checking here
Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Solution Finder > Technical Issue > How do I get the latest drivers for my graphics card? Topic #: 4051-3884
http://secondlife.com/support/?questionID=3884

Then please run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Vista: Click Start > (in start search) Type dxdiag > Click on the programme > Save All Information.

Please attach the text file to this issue.

Uploaded as requested by Ellla McMahon.

My drivers are updated to 8.9 which I believe is now the most recent and my graphics card seems to be one that is compatible with Second Life. The issue is also still continuing even after the drivers have been updated.

Hayami, thank you for the DxDiag report

This shows that your driver is version 7.15.0010.0096 Dated 4/8/2008

Please check with your Graphics card manufacturer and get the latest drivers for your card. Please see their web site for special instructions for uninstalling and removing any old graphics drivers.

Thank you

Ok, well I honestly don't know why that is showing up, because when I check Display Settings > Advanced Settings > Properties (under the adapters tab) > Drivers

it says my driver version is 8.477.0.0
Driver Date: 4/7/2008

I literally uninstalled my drivers and downloaded the 8.9 Catalyst version from the ATI site, and installed it. And now it appears that everything shows up the exact same...

Hayami, is your graphics card made by ATI ? On the ATI Drivers site for Vista OS & an ATI Mobility Radeon there is no driver mentioned for a HD 3650 card.

The OP on this issue has a VisionTek card. And I know that Sapphire have their own web site with driver updates.

Please could you recheck the make of graphics card you have.

Thank you

I am almost positive that the graphics card is made by ATI, they even have their own page for the ATI Mobility Radeon 3600 series on their website http://ati.amd.com/products/mobilityradeonhd3600/index.html

I know what you mean though, I had no idea where to download my drivers on my site, so I ended up downloading the closest thing I could find which was the ATI Radeon HD 3600 drivers...

I got a brand new HP Pavilion with an ATI Radeon HD 3200, and am having this same issue, the disabling of foot shadows has made my avatar render correctly, but other avatars are still transparent with no fix from any of the other options.

Stats are as follows :

---------------
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics (0x9612)
DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9612&SUBSYS_30F2103C&REV_00
Display Memory: 1917 MB
Dedicated Memory: 254 MB
Shared Memory: 1662 MB
Current Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor
Driver Name: atidxx32,atidxx64.dll,atiumdag,atiumdva,atiumd64.dll,atiumd6a.dat,atitmm64.dll
Driver Version: 7.15.0010.0096 (English)

Any advice? I'm extremely happy with my new lappy, but am a bit depressed that SL seems to dislike it.

Best bet is to make sure the drivers are up to date from http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
The only place I found the 3200 HD was under Intergrated/Motherboard after the OS choice.
