I can now confirm that the issue of freezes is 100% Linden server/network related. It seems the system is relying heavily on communicating with SL servers every second, e.g., perhaps to send/update avatar position, etc. Over the Easter weekend and at times of low SL concurrency (and also in less object- and avatar-dense SIMs, and at high altitude SIMs, e.g., 300) the viewer runs without glitches. Smooth camera/avatar motion for hours, without a single freeze and with excellent 15-25 fps on Ultra/highest settings (with 128m draw distance). However, after the Easter break and during periods of peak concurrency, freezes started to appear again (same machine, specs and broadband connection). I can also confirm that my own network connection/bandwidth/performance has not changed, before during or after the Easter weekend, as measured by http://resources.zdnet.co.uk/speedtest/ and by response/access times to all the other Web sites/Internet applications that I regularly access, and which remain unchanged. I think the network communication bits of the SL viewer need to be optimized.

This Meta Issue related specifically to Viewer 1.19.

If it is still an issue for you using the latest RC Viewer 1.22 [and Second Life Server 1.25.5.109327] which can be downloaded from here Release Candidate Test Viewers please

  • create a new issue
