I ahve this too
specs are as follows: I run xp on all of mine on one, full gig ram+virtual 6100 int graphics card duel core 3200's 500mb p4 with integrated gforce 4 on other I have seen a similar issue on vista64 - client crashes, can not be forced to quit (using task manager) even with admin privs.
Second Life 1.19.1 (2) Mar 19 2008 17:40:40 (Second Life Release Candidate) This issue is not in the least random for me. The last three or four RC viewers have hung on quit, every time. I am surprised this is not sorted yet, but perhaps the crashreporter also being affected prevents bug reports being filed.

Since using this new RC viewer I freeze on log out every time, I need to use the mac's 'force quit' to leave. This is still happening on RC3
Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Chipset Model: GeForce 6800 GT Update: still happens on RC3 Simil, Can you please provide us with Your Environment? Are you running any other programs when this happens? What are you doing when you experience this. Does it happen every time?
Alexa Linden made changes - 27/Mar/08 10:16 AM
I believe I've provided my environment already. This happens every single time with the 1.19.X, no matter if it's the only app running or not. It didn't happen with the 1.18.X (with the beta for example). I'm doing nothing when experiencing this because the app is quiting and soon freezing. By the way I'm not in fullscreen.
Mac user, adding confirmation for SL application freezing on quit, forcing to use Force Quit each time.
This started happening from first WindLight preview version until latest 1.19.1.3, and every time on quit. This may not be tight with Leopard OS, since I'm using Tiger 10.4.11 OS. Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Quad NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT: Chipset Model: GeForce 7800GT Side note : most of the time I don't even get to see the log out screen.
On every RC download my screen freezes on log out, it goes as far as showing the log out screen and that's it. My Mac details are above. I have to use the Mac force quit every time. Most times I only have SL running, I have no problems with anything else on the computer and I have never had problems with this with any viewer up to the latest RC viewer and I have been on SL on a daily basis for well over a year now, this problem as persisted through RC1 to RC4, just tested. I'm reopening as this is a big problem which will probably rear it's ugly head more so when this becomes the main viewer, you should fix it way before then.
If you decide to reset it to resolved once again, well there is not much I can do about that.

Dekka, Simil –
I checked the crash reporter db but was unable to find useful info in it for either of your crashes. As you've suspected, we aren't getting the crash reports. Can you both attach a secondlife logfile to this JIRA? Ideally grab the logfile after the client stops responding, but before you forcequit it. Thanks,
Simil Miles made changes - 31/Mar/08 11:17 AM
Thanks for the log, Simil. Because there are no crash reports it's going to be really difficult for us to sleuth out this viewer hang. Nothing really stands out to me in the log except that the last thing the viewer did was to try saving off the login pic for your next run.
If you could continue helping me debug this a bit, I'd like to know if your login pic updates. In other words, each time you log in to SL, is the login picture the snapshot of what you were doing at logout (forcequit), or is it some unchanging picture from the last time you used a non-1.19.1 based viewer? To others who have this problem: Please do the same thing and add your comments here.
This may be a problem with saving snapshots to disk. possibly the return of https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3529
The snapshot doesn't change, it's the same as when the app last quited properly - I noticed this several times.
Ok, Simil, at least now we have a smoking gun. The last thing in the log is taking the signout snapshot, yet the snapshot never saves to disk.
Thank you for helping me debug this; now I have more questions... Can you please try to take a snapshot and save it to disk? (use control `) Does your client hang on the snapshot? I'm going to import this issue and try to get a dev to look at it.
lindenrobot made changes - 31/Mar/08 02:38 PM
There is no problem with saving a snapshot to disk whether it's high resolution, compressed or silent.
When I relaunched the client it asked if I wanted to send a crash report (this happened only twice), I didn't get a window with details after I clicked Yes. I'm not sure anything was sent but you might want to check the recent reports if you can find mine... This might not be related but for the second time the app stopped to respond when I Set Home to Here, however on the next launch the new home was set properly. Thanks, Simil.
When you "set home to here" another snapshot is taken (screen_home.bmp). This further supports my theory that the snapshot code is where the problem lies. Arguing against that is that fact that when you actually save a snapshot, it works. I need to see if there is something different about the autosnapshot code. I don't see your recent crash in the crash reporter, but I wouldn't expect to until the data extraction script runs later today. Oh, and do you run full screen or windowed? What is your screen / window size? Thanks again. My screen's resolution is 1600x1200 but I run SL in a 1558x1156 window.
By the way, screen_home.bmp is NOT updated. Hi Periapse, I did my homework but had unexpected problems, I reduced the viewer size (by dragging the bottom left hand corner) about 90% of the original snapshot size that showed 1460 x 1081, then proceeded to reduce the viewer area more and at that point the computer hung, the buttons along the bottom disappeared and didn't have time to redraw, so I had to shut down and reboot, at this point I also noticed that the crash reporter icon had appeared in the dock area on the Mac, but not appearing on the screen, obviously stopped by the computer hanging.
When I relogged on I took another snapshot, this showed up as 1312 x 981 in Photoshop. Again I tried to reduce the viewer size (by dragging the bottom left hand corner) and once again the computer hung. So I'm not particularly keen on reducing the viewer size again. After my final login and not touching the size of the screen which was still 1312 x 981 (seems it chooses this size as default?), logging out caused SL to freeze and I had to do Force Quit again. Tomorrow I can test "set home to here" and see if anything changes. I'll also supply a copy of my second life log in case that throws light on anything at all, just discovered where to find it.

Thanks for all the input. I talked to the engineer who previously fixed some snapshot problems in the Windlight branch. The symptoms were the same, viewer would hang and you'd have to forcequit.
Since the Windlight JIRA has been reopened (snapshot problems observed again in 1.19.1), and since these hang-ups occur during the logout auto-snapshot, I've asked the same engineer to try to solve your issue. It's going to be challenging, since we can't repro it here. I've tried myself. I have a MacBook Pro, and a 1600x1200 monitor, and this doesn't happen for me. I'll update this issue as we learn more.
Periapse Linden made changes - 01/Apr/08 01:24 PM
I changed "set home to here" and SL froze, had to use force quit to leave, when I returned my home had been changed. Got a SecondLife.log before I forced quit on leaving SL tonight, will attach if I work out how.

OK Periapse, ran some tests on the same model:
Environment settings: Test procedures: Issue facts: Just to mention, if you need further, deeper tests just ask, I'm RL developer with a strong knowledge of Mac. Well, I think the problem lies somewhere in LLViewerWindow:rawSnapshot(), but it's a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
Fred, you and the others here have done a great job of helping already. From having no knowledge, at least now we see the hang happens in the snapshot code. When the main viewer class llappViewer, shuts down it calls saveFinalSnapshot(). This, in turn calls LLViewerWindow:saveSnapshot() (which sends out the final INFO message seen in the logs). Lastly, that calls rawSnapshot(), with the doRebuild flag on – which is different from how it is called by default (say, from the snapshot menu, which may explain why people are able to take and save normal snapshots). At this point we are hampered by the lack of a repro. Fred, I'll ask the dev working on this issue if he can use your skillz. It might make sense to give you a debug binary and see if you can get the hang to happen in a debugger. Of course you could probably do it yourself anyway using our 1.19.1 source drop. I'll get back to you after I've sync'ed up with the developer.

Though the devs were unable to repro this particular failure, they did have a repeatable case of a machine hanging (requiring force quit) during a snapshot.
The fix is some changes to the way a renderTarget is allocated in memory. It's been implemented and will go out in the 1.20.0 release candidate coming out this week. I really hope this will fix your issue. I will notify you when the new viewer is available and you can test it out. Today's new Beta release:
Second Life 1.18.6 (77968) Jan 29 2008 20:03:52 (Second Life Release) Everything works as it should when logging off, hope that's useful info. Dekka – I'm afraid the beta grid isn't going to be much help with this issue.
The beta grid is indeed running 1.20 server. But this is a viewer problem, and the 1.20 viewer is still in QA before it goes to release candidate. The beta grid viewer is based on very old 1.18.6 code, and doesn't have windlight. The current breakage appears to be in the windlight renderTarget code, so that's why the old beta grid viewer works fine. I will point you all to a viewer with the fix as soon as it becomes available. Hi !
Just to add my grain of salt, I had reported the same issue in On some cases it's not a crash, it's a veeeeeery long freeze. In other words, if I just leave it standing there on my MacMini Core Duo it will eventually log out. Long meaning something between ten and twenty minutes from my perpception (haven't timed it). It seems the longer I've been inworld, the longer it takes to log out. I've also had crashes on snapshot-to disk. I have a 1600x1200 screen and running in an almost-full-screen window. I don't run fullscreen because it doesn't give me 1600x1200. Hoping this can help ... --Anthea (also developer if I can be of any use) Thanks, Anthea. The 1.20 rc0 viewer should be available tomorrow (Wednesday, 9 April).
I'm hopeful that the renderTarget memory allocation fix in that viewer will clear up all these snapshot and logout issues. As soon as it's available I'll comment here. Please give it a try and see if it resolves the issue. If it doesn't, well I guess it'll be "back to the lab again, yo".

YAY! Latest 1.20.0.84432 works like a charm, NO MORE FREEZE
Good job, Linden! Works well for me too, thanks Periapse
1.19.1.4 (main) was released only few days before this bug was fixed, condemning 1.19.1.4 users (the majority of residents) to bear with that major issue for months until 1.20 becomes the main viewer.
Whew! I'm glad that fixed it.
For those of you who haven't downloaded the new release candidate you'll find it at: (or just go to secondlife.com and follow the dowload link at the bottom, the rc is "test software") Of course 1.20.0 has its own problems. I can't use it because of the Mighty Mouse issue. Fortunately I wasn't bitten by this force quit issue. In fact, I was never able to find a common thread among the percentage of Mac users affected by this force quit issue. So please use the 1.20 based release candidates. The next patch will fix the Mighty Mouse and Tools menu issues. After a few revs for Dazzle tweaks I believe that 1.20 will go into Release. I don't think it's going to take months to stabilize 1.20.

Crashes fixed here too, however snapshot doesn't save.
For info this is what I had in 1.19.1.4. Note the times. 2008-04-09T02:35:49Z INFO: addToMessage: STAT: Vertex Buffers Enabled: 0 ---------> A full 3 minute wait made it apear frozen, on a core duo 2 2008-04-09T02:39:04Z INFO: LLVoiceClient::participantStateChangeEvent: state is 9 Should I send that to another bug ? Thanks !! --Anthea Periapse, Wireless Mighty Mouse hanging and freezing keyboard too until turned off and on ? I have that too !! Goinf to open a new bug for it ...
OMG Periapse!...
Don't know what you did on 1.20.2.85278, but its totally unusable since it's a crash festival 1st crash on 1st login, crash again when buying an item, crash when wearing... etc... And the pity is that connection with previous version is denied now, so had to turn back to 1.19.1.4 with its freezing quit... HEEEEELP lol Weird, 1.20.2 works for me ... I still have a snapshot dating from when I dressed in red, but apart from that and a single crash on the first use, it's working good ...
Unusable for me. New issue created: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6763
snapshot issue cleared in RC3 ; it was updated at some point in RC2 though.
Thanks !!!!!! Only issue for me at the moment Viewer-wise is the shortcuts not being mapped correctly on the french keyboard (cmd-A quits for instance), but I've already logged it as a separate issue.

I'm working to synchronize our internal tracking with the public Issue Tracker. Internally we were tracking this issue, a crash from viewer 1.19.1, as fixed in the 1.20 series (As Periapse Linden noted, it was traced to a way a renderTarget is allocated in memory.)
In the meantime, a crash with similar symptoms that occurs in 1.20 has been opened : Simil, I know that viewer 1.20 was a long way in coming. Please feel free to close THIS issue if the original reported crash indeed is solved when you use 1.20.15. Or, re-open this issue if the same crash occurs; otherwise we will track the new problem(s) in
