Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-12300

 Description  « Hide
Hi there, just to let you guys know that Second Life is still unstable and crashes using the Latest ATI catalyst driver (8.3) that was released early March 08. This goes along with every ATI driver from version 7.12+ that crashes within 5 minutes of me using Second Life.

I get DOUBLE (Yes 2X) the frame rate using the latest drivers from ATI (8.3) compared to 7.11. Standing on a platform at 700m with nothing nearby, the frame rate goes from 10-12fps to 24-25Fps which is makes a big difference just using the latest drivers.

I can't provide much details other than what system i am using but looking around JIRA here i am seeing a lot of people who use ATI cards who have a range of problems using the latest ATI drivers.

If Linden Labs could please acknowledge that there is a problem with the latest ATI drivers and Second Life, would be very helpful especially if they could look into it.

P.S to serve update in injury i can't install a different graphics card on my system because the old one is intergreated in the Motherboard. If anyone is reading this, dont buy a computer when you cannot upgrade graphics card

Thanks,

Jay

There is a whole range of problems with ATI drivers ever since ATI upgraded their OpenGL to version 2.1 in their 7.12 drivers and onwards. My guess that it is an ATI driver problem, because the same thing occurred under Linux as well (and also Windows XP), ever since I upgraded to drivers 7.12 and higher.

Issues VWR-4335 and VWR-3947 might be related.

I also wonder if it might be related to AGP cards (my ATI card was an 9600 pro AGP), so please make sure in your bug reports to mention if it is AGP or not. It might help someone to fix the problem.

Anyway, I fixed all problems by upgrading to an NVIDIA card. Yes, it might be a bit drastic, but it works perfectly! Good luck to you all!

This bug no longer occurs for me using the latest ATI drivers and latest release candidate as of 22nd March 2008. In fact the veiwer was a lot more stable and i was able to run it with no real problems other than it seeming to be more memory intensive but it works and much better frame rate (like 2x than before using old 7.11 drivers) so im closing this issue because it seems fixed with there current release candidate.

The issue still exist for me. In the man viewer and the RC.On install SL sets the graphic settings to medium, once I open them and move it to high and then enable custom settings to adjust different settings the viewer will crash when I try to un-tick the atmospheric shader. The main viewer and RC also crash for me every time I logout of SL. The RC also crashes when I change VBO setting or texture memory from 256MB to 128MB and hit okay.

I'm having the exact same problem. I have an ATI Radeon X1600 Pro and since I updated my graphical drivers (since before I was continually getting the 'triangle' texture glitch something rotten) SL has loved to crash on whenever I go to somewhere even remotely populated. It's getting beyond a joke now!

Some of the text in popups and chat is also corrupted.

Tenor Lyle added a comment - 12/Sep/08 10:08 PM
I just built a nice new machine with an Radeon HD 4870 and of course I'm running the latest drivers (8.522). SL crashes within a minute of starting up. Just wanted to lend my 2 cents.

ATI released the Catalyst 8.9 today, please test to see if the updated drivers resolves your issue.

Thank you

According to VWR-9317 the 8.9 drivers still crash second life. Anyone else seeing this, or know if it's the same crash going on? This version was supposed to fix this problem, IIRC.

The ATI Catalyst or Hotfix (see card manufacturers web sites) will work with most newer ATI cards but there are still issues with some older ATI cards, particularly the AGP versions.

Please check with your computer or card manufacturer for the latest driver version for your setup.

Thank you

Hmmm, so that explains it. I downloaded and installed the game alittle while ago but when i start it up the screen goes blank and the monitor tells me that it's no longer getting anything from the computer.

I installed an ATI graphics card a couple years ago, anything i can do besides wait for a patch?

Ellla McMahon added a comment - 26/Oct/08 07:53 AM
Phantom, please check with your Graphics card manufacturer for the latest drivers.

ATI has released Catalyst 8.10 and some of their partners http://ati.amd.com/designpartners/index.html have also updated their drivers.

Please also make sure you have updated your OS and are using the latest Second Life Viewer 1.21.6 http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php

Thank you : )

Why are you lindens soo stubborn about this. It's issue that needs attention. 7.12 - 9.1 ati catalyst drivers and still issues. Why is this. I acquired this card thru a friend and I'll say one thing it blows farcry 2 away. Why not second life? DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!!! Please everyone with these troubles and ati, let linden lab know this is nonsense and needs resolved now! thx. :S

Having same problem. Running xp sp3, ati 4830, upgraded to latest driver 9.1 and SL crashes during login process. Upgraded to the RC, same problem. Turned graphics to low, same problems. Resolved it by rolling back Ati drivers to 8.12.

Rift Rehnquist added a comment - 24/May/09 06:41 PM
Confirmed. The Absolute latest ATI Drivers for the Radeon 4850HD (and by default the entire 800 series) as of 25/4/09 have the current standard Viewer crashing within seconds of attempted Login. Crashing seems to be somewhat random up to the point of Logging in which consistently causes client failure at the loading world stage of entry.

Failures can and do occur regularly even before attempted login.

Any attempt to change preferences and save them results in immediate failure and crash to desktop.

Final replicable results are always a crash to desktop followed by an extremely quick launch of the crash logger.

hi, i orignally closed this long time ago and this keeps getting reopened.

I still have problems with my ATI card and Second Life. It is not as bad now as it was a year plus ago when i wrote this PJIRA, I seem to recall that i posted a fix somewhere that worked for me on a PJIRA (i can't remember where cause this was over a year ago now) that by going to prefrences >> graphics >> hardware options >> turning down the grpahics menu to lowest fixed it and that SL does work for me on the latest version ATI drivers and has down since i posted the comment above that it did work for me with the then latest RC

I still have a problem with being too close to Alpha'd texture objects on SL and it does slow down and crash my computer that is a seperate issue and a bug i got grown use to. You just solve it by turning on advance menu, and turning off Alpha objects but that is seperate.

I am going to close this PJIRA because the version of SL then and now has changed a lot and so have the drivers. I stopped reading the comments after i orginally closed it when i belived it was fixed for me. I know and see a lot of people still have problems with ATI cards and SL.

I suggest that people create new bug reports and submit them with latest drivers and latest version of SL. i have different card to what some of the comments here have and they have completely different issues to what i experienced then over a year ago which I can't comment on and suggest you open a new one.

To Jay,

Why should have to set my settings to the lowest in graphics hardware menu? I just got a new laptop with a ati HD 4200 in it. Still the same thing. I think LL is just paying homage to the Nvidia ppl here in sl. Maybe they will learn when ppl start quitting left and right. I have an Nvidia in my desktop and sl flys on that. A little favortism going on here?

LL needs to listen up and fix this issue! I'm not gonna drop my settings to low to fix a problem that should have been taken care of a long time ago! :X

That's why this keeps getting reopened because LL proves they don't care!!

Paula Alderson added a comment - 11/Nov/09 08:27 PM
I forgot to add that I'm using the latest drivers 9.10 now for my laptop and running the newest sl viewer. All these reports need to keep being reopened until LL finally fixes this. I can't change my video card in my laptop. I want to be able to use sl as easily on it as I do on my desktop with the 7950gt.
