The problem occured when upgrading the system from Intel GMA.
It can be solved by deleting the settings.xml for the Release candidate and deleting the cache.

Same problem on my machine as well. I login and am in world for maybe 2 mins and I will crash. Not just SL crash but total machine shutdown. I also game on Call of Duty4 Multiplayer and Fable TLC, This problem is secluded to SL only. I have found that upon logging in...if I fly to 1000m where there is nothing to render..I can stay in world.

I upgraded my grphics card from a Sapphire Radeon 9550 256M 128-bit AGP 4X/8X because it wouldn't render sculpties.

Still having the same problem. I update, uninstall/reinstall, drivers, catalyst, SL, fresh windows install. Have sent card in for a replacement. upgraded to vista. Since I can play halflife2, call of duty2-5, fable tlc, far cry. I can only assume the problem is on Linden's end not mine. Secondlife is the only program that crashes my computer. When I had a radeon 9550 the only problem was it wouldnt render all sculpties......now with my radeon 3650 i can render anything and everything except running sl fopr longer than 30 mins. Maybe I would go premium again if linden labs would actually fix problems instead of just assuming they will fix themselves.

I do have a Lenovo W500 notebook with Windows Vista32. ATI Mobility Raedon HD 3650 (Driver: ATI Technologies, 19.9.2008, 8.520.4.4000). Will crash immediately after entering SL.<<<<.
1. Start SL 1.22.7
2. Program begins to load. Can hear inworld sound.
3. Get to downloading clothing. Tells me the clothing is still downloading, but will appear OK to other users yada yada.
4. Program freezes. Window flashes black, then either breaks into a disjointed pattern of color or goes white.
5. VPU recover resets graphics drivers.
6. SL impossible to run - can be killed with task manager.

I tested with Second Life 1.22.7 (108773) Jan 23 2009 19:27:16 (Second Life Release Candidate)

1) This is the latest ATI driver at this time
2) I followed Turn off WindLight rendering
2a) turning your Graphics preferences to 'Low' --> no cure
2b) --set VertexShad erEnable 0 --> no cure
2c) disable 'Vertex Buffer Objects' (VBO) --> helps

3a) turning your Graphics preferences to 'High' --> continues running
3b) --set VertexShad erEnable 0 REMOVED --> continues running

Now SL RC seems to run stable. However, I do think the problem is not solved this way...

I think disable 'Vertex Buffer Objects' (VBO) is not a solution for this problem! This parctiacally means that the processing power of the graphics chip is GREATLY reduced.

CrashCat Luchador added a comment - 23/Mar/09 05:05 PM
I'm getting viewer crashes during the "Initializing multimedia..." step of login. Pretty sure this is also an HD 3650 card but in sysinfo it shows as "3600 series". Switching the graphics setting to Low with no customization did not produce any change in behavior. Though I don't expect much since this is an AGP card and ATI has apparently decided they don't care about making their AGP drivers work. I installed their "AGP fix" driver but it's not very up to date either.

CrashCat, which ATI Catalyst are you using ?

If it is one from the Series 9.* please see Zen Linden added a comment - 20/Mar/09 10:22 AM on VWR-12139

Talked to ATI. Looks like it was a problem in the driver of confusing accessing compressed textures vs. uncompressed textures and has been fixed internally by ATI, but probably will not go out by 9.3. 9.4 will most likely clear it up.

The workaround is to set the Catalyst AI to Standard.

For technical, time-sensitive and/or Region/Account specific issues please Submit a Ticket with Support as per JIRA Home page They will be able to give you individual help and advice.

I have a Radeon HD 3650 Card in my Sony VGN-FW21ZLaptop.

I have exactly the same issues as above. Rezzing freezes the Laptop on both 1.23 and Snowglobe and I have to restart

I raised a ticket against 1.23 and was told Radeon HD cards are not supported by LL, and teh ticket was closed

1.22 is good (relatively speaking), I am dreading the next "upgrade" as I will be one away from not being able to use SL.

And Yes Alexa, I have uninstalled, re-installed, cleared caches. it is SL that is broken, happens with no other game

Please, Please. please fix this ASAP

Thanks

Solution

I have a Radeon HD 3650 on a computer running Windows 7. My computer crashes if I move around too much on SL and at random times. I have uninstalled, re-installed, and cleared caches. I tried Snowglobe, Second Life 1.23.4 (123523) Jun 9 2009 08:32:14 (Second Life Release Candidate)

Built with MSVC version 1400

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (2533 MHz)
Memory: 2047 MB
OS Version: Professional 7 (Build 7100)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP
Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.62-090520m1-083609E-VisionTek
OpenGL Version: 2.1.8673

Is there a fix getting close?

Korbin Riva added a comment - 04/Sep/09 06:08 PM - edited
I just wanted to add that I have the same problem, using the latest release candidate, and the same AGP card. I just upgraded to the next-to-latest driver version (9.7, 9.8 doesn't install for me for some reason). For users with this card, you probably already know that it's the "hotfix driver" you need for ATI AGP HD cards.
For me, the crash is not reproducible, and doesn't happen right after I log in. It's just random. I've attached my log files.

Second Life 1.23.4 (123523) Jun 9 2009 08:32:14 (Second Life Release Candidate)
CPU: AMD K7 (Unknown model) (2171 MHz)
Memory: 2048 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3600 Series
Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.632-090702a-084687E-ATI
OpenGL Version: 2.1.8787

I will test it later with VBO off. Would someone reopen this and update the version to 1.23.4 please?
What more info could we provide?

EDIT: Turning VBO off does seem to have been a workaround for the crashes, although SL is still extremely slow at times. Is this really a fix? It could be causing a performance hit having it off.

Adding comment that with catalyst 9.8 drivers installed the same problem exists.
